Top Ten Lists of Eighties Movies
The concept is pretty easily, pick your ten favorite movies from the eighties. The hard part? I want JUST movies from the eighties, not movies you might have seen during the eighties. Also, try and avoid movies that came out after the eighties if possible, 1990 is pretty borderline, I won't scream too loudly if you add one that is from then...

- 10. The Witches Of Eastwick
Ah, Nicholson. If you've never danced with the devil in the pale moonlight, then give your copy of "Batman" a rest and check out Jack at his demonic best, supported so well by Cher, Michelle Pfeiffer, and the always-sexy Susan Sarandon.
- 9. Ferris Bueller's Day Off
John Hughes was unstoppable in the 80's, primarily giving us teen-oriented comedies that no one could beat. Here, in a fim that was written in a weekend, Matthew Broderick and company spend a most adventurous day off from school, galavanting in the Windy City, all the while being pursued by a tyrannical principal and a jealous sister. Includes a pre-"Dirty Dancing" Jennifer Grey, and a pre-everything Charlie Sheen. Shake it up, baby, and save Ferris!
- 8. Sixteen Candles
I didn't want Ringwald and Hall's heads to swell by putting this one as high up as their other, slightly superior, mid-80's triumph. Still, this movie has innumerable elements that made it the classic it is. I liked when Farmer Ted is serenading Samantha with Beatles tunes (he would've scored if he'd sung a Thompson Twins medley!).
- 7. Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid
Picking a favorite Steve Martin movie is like picking a favorite Beatles song - how can you choose? Yet, I think this was the one in the 80's that had the greatest impact on me. It serves as a tribute to film noir, a showcase for Martin's acting abilities, and a testament to the effectiveness of old-school special effects.
- 6. Far From Home
This film is most notable as the turning point for Drew Barrymore. Here, only in her early teens, she was coming out as a babe to be reckoned with, complete with a wonderful bathing suit scene. This foreshadowed the sexier roles she would soon play in movies like "Poison Ivy", "Wayne's World II", and "The Amy Fisher Story".
- 5. The Naked Gun
Leslie Nielsen really reinvented himself as a master funnyman in the 80's, particularly in films by Zucker-Abrams-Zucker, such as this one. Though rather old to be playing a leading man, Nielsen pulls off the physical comedy and light-hearted romance with skills he acquired from decades in the business. "The Naked Gun"'s only drawback is the presence of freed murderer O.J. Simpson in each of the series' three outings.
- 4. April Fool's Day
Trust me. This is the greatest horror movie ever. (It's even got Tom 'Biff Tannen' Wilson in it.) Rent this one with a whole bunch of people some night, but please do it any other time than on April 1st.
- 3. Coming To America
The inimitable Eddie Murphy is fantastically funny in this charming movie in which he admirably plays multiple roles with comedic grace and genius. Kudos to the usually unlikable Arsenio Hall for keeping up with his teacher here.
- 2. The Breakfast Club
It was great to be a kid when this movie was in the theater. Molly Ringwald was so cute, Judd Nelson was such a smart-ass, and Paul Gleason couldn't have been a better bastard. [Carl: "When I was a kid, I wanted to be John Lennon."]
- 1. Back to the Future / Back to the Future II
I lumped these together so I wouldn't have 11 movies. Really, III should be included (from 1990), as the Back to the Future trilogy, for my money, is the best piece of moviemaking ever. Where do I get me a Hoverboard? (And will there ever be that oft-discussed Part IV with Sarah Michelle Gellar and Christopher Lloyd?)
