Top Ten Lists of Eighties Movies

The concept is pretty easily, pick your ten favorite movies from the eighties. The hard part? I want JUST movies from the eighties, not movies you might have seen during the eighties. Also, try and avoid movies that came out after the eighties if possible, 1990 is pretty borderline, I won't scream too loudly if you add one that is from then...

Personally, I reckon each movies from each decade collectively have a unique character that distinguishes them from others. For the movies from the 80s, innocence and glamourising social life are just a couple of interesting traits I believe they have.

"Hey Mikey!" This movie has inspired to name my son Mikey, whenever I have one.
  • 4. The Lost Boys
Greatest vampire movie of all time!
  • 3. The Breakfast Club
At first before i saw this movie i thought what's so exciting about kids in detention but when I watched it I loved it sooo much!
  • 2. Sixteen Candles
I wish I could get an older guy to like me like she could.
  • 1. Stand By Me
I love this movie so much, not only cause of Corey, But it's just an awesome movie "Gordie just screwed the pooch!"
I can't list all the great 80s movies I've seen, I also haven't seen that many that doesn't have Corey on it(even some other movies of his I havent seen) because I just started watching 80s stuff now because I was born in 89 so I was mostly raised on the movie "Wayne's World" from the 90s. There's a few 80s movies I saw when I was younger but now I am more interested in all of them. I can definetly name a lot of 80s shows I like.

  • 10. Back to the Future
I saw this in the movie theater no less than 5 times. I loved Marty McFly, his combination of courage and fear, a sort of low self esteem that was endearing. I liked the father/son relationship of Marty and Doc, his dysfunctional family in the beginning of the film.
  • 9. Mask
Not the Jim Carrey monstrosity but the one with Cher. What can I say about this movie? If I could live life with half of Rocky Dennis' grace and courage, and Cher is perfect here as the troubled mother of a very extraordinary boy. This movie makes me cry to this day.
  • 8. E.T.
Saw this one in the movie theater (this makes me feel old...people who can buy alcohol were not even born then, some of them) granted I was only 6. Anyway, I wept at the end of this movie, wept. Elliot is still one of my favorite movie characters...loved this movie.
  • 7. Promised Land
Bought this DVD over the internet and paid $30, saw it recently in the store for $9.99. But it was worth it, this movie stars Keifer Sutherland in the nice guy role of Danny "The Senator" and it is a wonderful study of post~college/high school broken dreams and broken lives. It ends in my favorite movie fashion (as the Outsides did) with the hero dying tragically.
  • 6. Terminator
"I'm at Club Noir," This movie is a classic, so dark and violent. If you are impregnated by your son's time traveling best friend, you know trouble is ahead.
  • 5. National Lampoon's Vacation
Chevy Chase's over the top comedy is perfect here, and the journey from Chicago to "Wally World" is one you shouldn't miss.
  • 4. The Shining
This is the movie that keeps on giving. There is just so much to discover, you need to watch this one several times. Jack Nicholson is perfect. There is a scene in this movie that I watched once (I first saw it 16 years ago) and to this day I have to close my eyes during it. Kubrick is a god.
  • 3. The Lost Boys
I saw this at 13 and probably took it a little more seriously than it was meant but loved it, Keifer Sutherland as David, his quiet presence, awesome. For many years I wanted to be Star.
  • 2. The Karate Kid
I saw this movie when I was 10 because Ralph Macchio (Johnny Cade) was in it. But this movie was fabulous, it had comedy(what kind of a belt do you have? JC Penney's, $3.98. You like?) It had the very real emotion of being bullied (when Daniel throws his bike in the dumpster...love that scene) and it had the underdog winning in the end. Great.
  • 1. The Outsiders
I saw this movie when I was 9 and it was amazing. Johnny Cade is the most wonderful character. He kills someone, saves little kids, and dies a tragic hero, does it get any better?
