Top Ten Lists of Eighties Movies

The concept is pretty easily, pick your ten favorite movies from the eighties. The hard part? I want JUST movies from the eighties, not movies you might have seen during the eighties. Also, try and avoid movies that came out after the eighties if possible, 1990 is pretty borderline, I won't scream too loudly if you add one that is from then...

By: Kelly
  • 10. Fast Times at Ridgemont High
-thud thud- "That was my skull"
  • 9. Gremlins
A horde of obnoxious, green monsters run amok on the people of this quiet, snow-covered town. There was Stripper Gremlin, Mafioso Gremlin, Transvestite Gremlin, Masked Gunman Gremlin, and Snow White & the 7 Dwarves.
  • 8. St. Elmo's Fire
My favorite Brat Pack movie. They're all a little older and maybe a little less wiser in St. Elmo's Fire. Eighties fashion, music, comraderie, and OoOo Demi Moore as a blonde and Rob Lowe with his sax!
  • 7. Stand By Me
River Phoenix proved himself to be one of the greatest talents of our generation in Stand By Me. A touching tale of lost innocence, growing up, and true friendship.
  • 6. Hellraiser 2
I'm not really sure when it came out originally, but it stands as one of my favorite horror flicks of all time.
  • 5. Breakfast Club
The movie for every teen who's ever felt left out, wondering what the cool kids were like. The brain, the princess, the felon, the basketcase, the jock. United against the villianous principal. Killer soundtrack, too.
  • 4. Dream A Little Dream
Another of the many Corey Haim/Feldman flicks, but this one doesn't suck. William McNamara, Meredith Salenger, Corey Haim, and Corey Feldman. Boy runs into girl and BOOM, they're possessed by the spirits of their elderly neighbors. Do I even have to mention how hot William McNamara is in it?
  • 3. The Lost Boys
Before there were Lestat and Louis, there were the Lost Boys. Dark sensuality, adult villians, and that bat cave with The Doors poster. Jason Patric, Jami Gertz, Kiefer Sutherland, Corey Haim, Dianne Wiest, Alex Winters (before Bill & Ted) all before they went to crap. Still the best vampire film ever.
  • 2. Pump Up the Volume
The movie that screamed out the anthem for angst-ridden, bored, discontent teenagers of my generation all around the globe. We're sick as fuck of being held down, silenced, and spoon fed our parents' Baby Boom bullshit. Great soundtrack, too.
  • 1. Heathers
"Fuck me gently with a chainsaw", "If Betty Finn's fairy godmother made her cool, do you really think she'd still hang out with her dweebette friends" A time when Shannen Doherty wasn't the biggest bitch on the set. Before Winona Ryder looked anorexic. Before Christian Slater began to suck. I know this film by heart from start to finish.
In no particular order...

  • 10. The Last Starfighter / 1984
Ok I'm a sci-fi guy, no the acting wasn't Oscar worthy, but it had a great cast, action and great graphics for the day and time.
  • 9. Tron / ?
Way ahead of it's time in terms of using computer generated graphics. Plus your classic tale of good vs. evil.
  • 8. Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure / 1988
I was in high school when this one came out, I think I saw it 3 times in the theatres. Dude! Rufus! Bee-thoven!
  • 7. Amadeus
Excellent movie, he was a little on the wacko side, but I guess if you thought your father's ghost was haunting you, you would be too.
  • 6. E.T.
    Phone home.
  • 5. War Games
I remember camping out as a kid, and talking about this movie. Worried that the Russians were going to bomb us.
  • 4. Steel Magnolias / 1989
This is a great movie, and will always hold a special place in my heart as my first date movie.
  • 3. The Princess Bride / 1987
Have fun storming the castle! One of my all time favs from the 80's, how could you not love this one.
  • 2. Empire Strikes Back / 1980
Luke I am your father. No!!!!!!
  • 1. Raiders of the Lost Ark / 1981
Hard to pick a #1, but this is near the top of mine.
Runners up: Return of the Jedi, Sixteen Candles, The Little Mermaid

  • 10. Rocky 3/1982
It was tough to choose between this and Rocky 4, but Rocky 3 is overall better in my eyes. In Rocky 3 you have the lose of Mick, Clubber Lang played by Mr. T(who is very eighties if you ask me), Hulk Hogan, and the song Eye of the Tiger, that would inspire a large breed of old and out of shape jocks to buy the cd and go listen to it at there precious workout gym or sports club. Rocky 3 is eighties and Rocky 4 is the Cold War and eighties. So Rocky 3 get's my vote over Rocky 4.
  • 9. Stripes/1981
One of the greatest comedies of all time. If you make a web of all of the actors in this movie and link them to two other movies you cover a huge amount of ground as far as comedies go. Bill Murray is still one of the funniest people in the movie industry.
  • 8. The Goonies/1985
Great adventure movie, I think overall I hear more talk about the Goonies on a yearly basis than I do any other eigthies movie.
  • 7. Ghostbusters/1984
If anyone asks me what I have wanted to be my whole life I respond "A Ghostbuster." Peter Venkman, Egon Spangler, Winston Zeddemore, and of course Raymond Stantz. These guys are great! This is one of the most entertaining movies I have ever seen. Ghostbusters is in a paranormal world of its own, that I have loved since I first saw it.
  • 6. Say Anything/1989
Perhaps one of the best romantic comedies, maybe tied with Cusack's latest gem High Fidelity. Lloyd Dobbler is an inspiration to all. He has tuly cares about people and loves kickboxing. Great lines accompany this kick ass love story and eighties movie. At the end of Cameron Crowe's first film you truly feel satisfied with the movie, and also you feel satisfied with yourself. What better way to tell the your girl you love her by blasting Peter Gabriel's In Your Eyes.
  • 5. Back to the Future/1985
Doc. Brown, Marty McFly, Bif Tannen, a Dolorean Time Machine, and the constant use of the word heavy makes this movie crack the top five best 80's movies.
  • 4. Revenge of the Nerds/1984
In my opinion the best college movie ever. I know Animal House is good, but that took place in 1969, Nerds was in the eighties. Such characters as Booger(Dudley Dawson), Lewis Skulnick, Gilbert Lowe, Lamar Latrell, and a Japanese guy named Takashi. This movie has lines that I still say over in my head and laugh. Also Stan Gable, what a great dooshbag. Ohh and who could forget Betty Childs. Also one of the best eighties/party scenes is when the Nerds bust out Wonder Joints and groove to Thriller.
  • 3. TeenWolf/1985
Scott Howard, Stiles, Boof, Pamela Wells, and a basketball team by the name of the Beavers. This movie kicks! It captures the eighties party, and also tackles the world of minors trying to buy beer. Great end scene when little MJ Fox comes back to win the big game versus the Dragons.
  • 2. Breakfast Club/1985
Perhaps the best movie about high school ever written. Though very much a comedy, is also a very good drama, which makes this movie a classic. It is a perfect eighties movie, the Brat Pack, Simple Minds, John Hughes, and it is about high school kids which so many others are.
  • 1. Karate Kid/1984
Daniel Larusso meets Mr. Miyagi and a friendship is formed that will hold true for two more movies. Great life lessons, kick ass karate scenes, Cruel Summer by Bananarama, Young Elizabeth Shue, and a kid from New Jersey that moves to California. You really feel for Daniel when he is all alone in the beginning, especially when he throws his bike in the dumpster, but you never feel better when he sneds a crane kick to the face of Johnny Lawrence and wins the All Valley Karate Tournament.
Honorable Mentions:Rambo, Platoon, Rocky 4(Best Cold War Movie Ever):),Red Dawn(Second Best Cold War Movie Ever), The Outsiders, Rumblefish, Sixteen Candles, Better off Dead, Amadeus, Rad(which is in a league of its own, but a great eighties movie), Real Genuis, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Fast Times.

  • 10. Wild Strawberries
The opening dream sequence is the most haunting thing i've seen in a movie.
  • 9. The Wild Bunch
The scene where William Holden gives his speech to the bunch about sticking together, and than rides off into the sunset always makes me cry.
  • 8. Pickpocket
Robert Bressons search for grace and redemption in a cruel world.
  • 7. Floating Weeds
    Yasujiro Ozu's Masterpiece about family.

Jean Renoir's beautiful celebration of life during the horrors of WW1
runners up: L'Atalante, Vertigo, The Third Man, Lolita(62), 8 1/2, and everything Kubrick made since Lolita.
