Top Ten Lists of Eighties Movies

The concept is pretty easily, pick your ten favorite movies from the eighties. The hard part? I want JUST movies from the eighties, not movies you might have seen during the eighties. Also, try and avoid movies that came out after the eighties if possible, 1990 is pretty borderline, I won't scream too loudly if you add one that is from then...

The 80's rock.

  • 10. Sixteen Candles
Ok, so it's not academy award material...but it *does* have Anthony Michael Hall as "Farmer Ted" (actually billed as "The Geek"), and that guy from "ER" as "Long Duck Dong" (who has the most memorable line: "Oh no more yankie my wankie! The Donger need FOOD!"). Far better than the overrated Ferris Bueller's Day Off, in my opinion.
  • 9. The Road Warrior (aka, Mad Max 2)
Only slightly less influential than Blade Runner in the sci-fi/future world genre, this movie boasts the greatest chase scene of all time (even better than the one in Raiders of the Lost Ark!).
  • 8. Blade Runner
This stylish "future noir" by Ridley Scott was perhaps the most influencial sci-fi movie of the 1980s, predating "cyberpunk" by several years. The cast is incredible, and the film score by Vangelis is legendary.
  • 7. Stand By Me
Perhaps not the greatest movie of the 1980s, but this deserves a mention if only because it was the only really decent adaptation of a Steve King novel up to this point. (Remember--it was filmed before Misery and Shawshank Redemption.)
  • 6. Pee Wee's Big Adventure
Oh c'mon folks! Tim Burton's debut was only a hint of the great things that would later come from his twisted vision, but how can one omit a movie with great lines such as, "Tell 'em Large Marge sent you!" and "Have you got something to say Amazing Larry?!?" Brilliant! Oh! And Paul Reubens as Pee Wee Herman ("Paging Mr. Herman!") is a hoot!
  • 5. Ghostbusters
The ultimate "summer" movie, this movie looks as good visually today as it did when it came out.
  • 4. Fletch
One of the most underrated comedys of the 80s, but certainly one of the funniest. Like Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Fletch gets funnier with every viewing. "What kind of name is 'Poon' anyway?"
  • 3. Heathers
Possibly the blackest black comedy ever made, this was a springboard for many young actors, including Winona Ryder, Christian Slater, and Shannon Dougherty.
  • 2. Blue Velvet
First time I saw it I was horrified. The second time I saw it I couldn't stop laughing. Depressing, hilarious, and downright disburbing, this is one not to be missed. Best line: "Heineken?!? pabst blue ribbon!!!"
  • 1. Raiders Of The Lost Ark
A great movie that I never get tired of watching. The opening sequence alone is worth the price of admission, and is arguably among the most memorable in film history.
Honorable Mentions: The Adventures of Buckaroo Bonzai Across the Eighth Dimension Fast Times at Ridgemont High The Empire Strikes Back John Carpenter's The Thing Poltergeist A Nightmare on Elm Street Trancers The Naked Gun Amadeus
