Top Ten Lists of Eighties Movies

The concept is pretty easily, pick your ten favorite movies from the eighties. The hard part? I want JUST movies from the eighties, not movies you might have seen during the eighties. Also, try and avoid movies that came out after the eighties if possible, 1990 is pretty borderline, I won't scream too loudly if you add one that is from then...

  • 10. Pretty in Pink
Another great John Hughes film. Molly Ringwald again, as a teenager filled with high school angst. The best performance however is by Jon Cryer as the unforgettable Ducky.
  • 9. Girls Just Want to Have Fun
This movie just makes me feel good and makes me want to dance. Anyways, this movie has some great 80's music with a cameo by the great KROQ DJ, Richard Blade. This movie also has Shannon Doherty, Helen Hunt, Sarah Jessica Parker and Jonathan Silverman.
  • 8. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
Harrison Ford is one of the greatest heroes in cinema. This role was meant for him. This Indiana Jones movie is better than the other two, although Raiders comes close. But this one has both River Phoenix and Sean Connery.
  • 7. Stand By Me
This movie about the coming of age story of four friends is definately one of the best 80's movies ever. How could you not love River Phoenix as a little boy?
  • 6. The Lost Boys
This movie is as hip as a teen horror movie gets. It has both Coreys, Keifer Sutherland, Jason Patrick and Jaimie Gertz. This movie rules and so does its soundtrack.
  • 5. Goonies
This is the movie you loved as a kid. I wanted to be one of the Goonies and go on some super cool adventure and find treasure. And Chunk's "truffle shuffle" has got to be one of the funniest things I have ever seen.
  • 4. Ferris Bueller's Day Off
This is the movie that anyone can watch over and over again and not get sick of it. Didn't you want to be just like Ferris in high school? He's got to be the coolest teenager ever. Matthew Broderick rules.
  • 3. Heathers
This movie has got to be one of the greatest teen movies ever made. Winona rules as Veronica and Christian Slater is the ever cool JD. There is also some great lingo like "you're beautiful," "how very," and "greetings and salutations."
  • 2. Willow
Everybody remembers seeing this movie as a kid or at least seeing it played over and over again on tv. It is the ultimate fanasty/adventure movie. It works for the whole family. Warwick Davis was only 17 when he did this. Anyways, how could you not love a movie starring a midget?
  • 1. The Breakfast Club
This movie pretty much defines teen angst. Although it is the quinessential 80's movie, teenagers can still relate to it today. The cast is wonderful...the Brat Pack at its best.

  • 10. The Times of Harvey Milk
1984, Academy Award-winning documentary about an openly gay political figure in mid 1970's San Francisco. Many of the people interviewed for the film are as unforgettable as Harvey Milk is. You also get a glimpse of Dianne Feinstein's rise to prominence.
  • 9. Ruckus
1980, Linda Blair and Dirk Benedict:The not-so-perfect Odd Couple for a sleepy Alabama town. Ben Johnson and Richard Farnsworth guest star. Features a spectacular high fall scene performed by the late Stunt-Meister Dar Robinson. Believe it or not, the fall scene appeared in the opening moments of a March 1994 Academy Awards program!!!
  • 8. Amadeus
1984, Tom Hulces's giggling Mozart--a punk genius superstar before we knew what such a thing was. Told superbly thru the tormented recollences of F. Murray Abraham's brillantly acted Soliari.
  • 7. Broadcast News
1987, The 1980's best movie about the television business. And, if you'll pardon me for saying so, the best movie about TV since 1976's Network!
  • 6. The Long Riders
1980, The dialogue in this film is sometimes pretty weird. Nonetheless, it is a fairly accurate account of the James-Younger gang. Pamela Reed's Belle Starr gives and gets great one-liners. The stagecoach robbery is my special favorite!! Great soundtrack by Ry Cooder.
  • 5. The Sword and the Sorcerer
1982, Okay, so it was pure medieval hokem. But there was one scene that really stood out. This was when the booming-voice bishop was saying to Alana "Do you, Alana, take this man--Titus--O Lord of {goes into all of Titus' titles}--to be your lover, your groom, Master!!! AND THE FATHER OF YOUR CHILDREN ???" Girls, imagine you're getting married and something like that is being said to YOU!!!! Still want the guy??

1983, Well-done story on the birth of America's manned space program. Donald Moffat's portrayal of Lyndon Johnson richly deserved--but did not get--an Oscar nomination. The film's final Chuck Yeager scene is dynamite. And then there is all that great music.

By: Big Jimmy
By: Kellee Edwards
  • 10. Porky's
  • 9. Heathers
  • 8. Gremlins
  • 7. Back To the Future
  • 6. Beetlejuice
  • 5. Ghostbusters
  • 4. Mannequinn
From hence onwards all my favourite movies rate ten out of ten...they are either my favourites because they are funny, scary, exciting or just plain brilliant. I don't think we will be ever privelidged again with these kind of movies just quite the same - that is why classic 80's movies will always live on.
  • 3. Goonies
Once again - another unforgettable movie from the 80's. To this day I still love to watch the 'Goonies'.
  • 2. Dirty Dancing
After I watched 'Dirty Dancing' - dancing was forever defined for me. Who WASN'T envious of Baby when she got to grind pelvises with Johny? Who DIDN'T swoon everytime they saw Patrick Swayze sway his hips? Who COULDN'T stop singing every time 'I Had the Time Of My Life' came on and who secretly wanted to dirty dance just like everyone in movie? 'Dirty Dancing' is a classic of fine 80's acting, dancing and singing all roled into one. A must!
  • 1. The Breakfast Club
"Don't You (Forget About This Movie!) This is the ULTIMATE 80's movie to be ever produced in it's genre - with an unforgettable cast and story-line but not to mention the greatest movie song of all times! Which just blew me (and many others) away. Who would not like and forget such a memorable movie like 'The Breakfast Club'.?!
