I welcome any comments you may have at: chuck@worcestermass.com. This
newsletter comes out once a month, or however often I get a chance to
put one together.

 1. Upcoming Eighties Events & News
--------------------------------------------------------------------

John Mellencamp is currently on tour, from the reviews I read of his
last years tour, it's worth checking out. He's not one of those
artists who throws away his old catalog of tunes when on the road
like U2 and R.E.M. do.

The US destroyed the manufacturing plant in Kosovo that was
used to manufacturer, yup, you guessed it, the Yugo! The last Yugo's
were manufactured in 1992, though they stopped shipping them to the
US well before that. So I imagine we wouldn't have seen any more
of those buggers anyways.

Sinead O'Connor, you may remember her as the woman whose career ended
around the same time she ripped up a picture of the pope on live TV
(Saturday Night Live) several years ago. Well, she recently became an
ordained priest in the Latin Tridentine Order of the Catholic Church.
It's a radical sect that operates without supervision of the Pope.
I'm not making this up. According to someone who knows her, she has
apologized to the Pope about the whole picture incident. She is now
known as Mother Bernadetter Marie O'Connor and can perform duties
such as baptism, marriage, and communion.

 2. What's New at InThe80s's?
--------------------------------------------------------------------

I have to apologize about the newsletter being so late this time, I
got caught up with the new site and trying to get all the bugs ironed
out. Hopefully everything will be running smoothly before too long.

Changes? Well, there's a new name, InThe80s.Com instead of ChuckyG's.
I felt it was a little more professional, and I couldn't register
ChuckyG.com anyways. It's also easier to spell than the last site.

I've redesigned the TV/Cartoon/Game Show pages so that they all
have their own individual page, in much the same fashion as the movie
pages do currently. I also redesigned the biographies, compilation
reviews, album reviews, and clothing to follow in this manner as
well. This allows for easier linking and updating of information.

I'm currently in the process of writing a new search engine for the
web site to better handle how my pages are laid out, and to come up
with results quicker than the standard search programs I've used in
the past. In addition, there is now a specialized search available
for the misheard lyrics that allows you to list all songs by a
certain group, instead of having to browse the pages manually, or get
a list of files that you then have to search through. Check it out
at: http://www.inthe80s.com/misheard/search.shtml

Behind the scenes, I've redesigned how scripts are handled,
information is now validated and posted directly on the site, no more
cut and past from email. This will allow a quicker turn around on new
submissions for almost all the pages.

 3. Favorite Misheard Lyrics This Month

Starship's "We Built This City On Rock and Roll"
Misheard Lyrics:
We built this city on rocky road

Correct Lyrics:
We built this city on rock and roll

I just loved the concept of a city built around a flavor of ice cream.

By Brian

10. Planes, Trains, and Automobiles
THOSE AREN'T TWO PILLOWS!!!" To me, this stands as John Candy's
best work. I miss Candy immensely (no pun intended). You could
always tell he had a big heart... and WOW does it show in this
movie. What a great film from a pair of timeless comedic actors.
9. Back To The Future
What a cool thrill-ride of a movie. This is the one that first
turned me on to Bob Zemekis (director). He's never disappointed
    me since.
8. 16 Candles
Molly Ringwald, Anthony Michael Hall, and a bunch of unknowns who
went on to become stars. When Anthony Michael Hall get's Molly's
UNDERWEAR and charges admission to see it? That's CLASSIC 80's!
What about when they clear the table at the end of the party and
Anthony Michael Hall is under the glass... THOSE were the kids I
wanted to hang with when I was in high school. Somehow no one in
my high school was ever as cool as in those Hughes movies.
7. Breakfast Club
Of all people to see this with for the first time I saw it with
my MOTHER. She totally didn't get most of it... which was exactly
the point of the movie. John Hughes at the top of his game.
6. Top Gun
You literally have to be DEAD not to like this movie. POUNDING
soundtrack. Made Iron Eagle look like some high school kid making
a movie with a video camera. Cruise, Edwards, McGillis... and
TONS of attitude. I get a testosterone rush just thinking about
    it.
5. Real Genius
Most of the movies on this list are of the variety "always
watchable" That is... no matter HOW many times you've seen it...
it still draws you in and holds your attention. "Kent... this is
    GOD!"
4. Say Anything
Cusack charts again with this AWESOME little movie. I saw this
one 15 times in the movie theater- each time bringing new friends
who would demand to come see it again and again with me. Everyone
seemed to identify with Lloyd Dobbler... sorry guys... but *I*
was Lloyd... right down to the Malibu. :)
3. Better Off Dead
She let her reptilian son put his testicles all over me..."
"Testacles?!?" "Yes... you know... Octopus? Testacles?" "OH!
TENTACLES... N-T... TENTACLES..." GOD I love this movie. I
watched it so many times I could RECITE it. Whomever said John
Hughes did this should be shot. Hughes was NEVER this
inventive... never this daring... and never this funny.
2. Ferris Bueller's Day Off
    Rooney... your an a**hole!"
1. Fast Times At Ridgemont High
SO many stars spawned from this hit. It's STILL hilarious even by
today's standards. It's hard to pick a number one from so many
great movies but if I had to... it would be Fast Times.

Oh GOD where to start. I listed mostly 80's feel-good teen flicks.
But there are SO MANY I can't list. I could easily give a top 50.
Maybe I can suggest some of my personal favorites that are little
known and VERY OVERLOOKED: (1) NO SMALL AFFAIR - Demi Moore
(pre-enhanced) and Jon Cryer. Very sweet. It touched a nerve in me
and still does. (2) HOT PURSUIT - A Cusack film that most people have
never heard of. Not as good as Better Off Dead or One Crazy Summer...
but in the same family... and very very funny. (3) LAST AMERICAN
VIRGIN - Once again... lots of stars who WEREN'T stars when the movie
came out. Soundtrack 5 years ahead of it's time (songs from this
movie weren't popular until several YEARS after this movie debuted).
Notice the girl is the SAME GIRL from Better Off Dead (the French
girl). ... So little time... and so many honorable mentions... I
won't even MENTION them! Thanks for reading!

 5. Review Of The Month
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Yaz, "Upstairs at Eric's"

I've got a lot of these songs on compilations, and never realized it
until I picked up the album. This is definately a great showcase for
Alison Moyet's voice and Vince Clarke's synthesizer work. Three big
hits are on here, "Only You" "Don't Go" and "Situation".

The most intersting track has to be "I Before E Except After C"
which is a sonic collage not unlike the Beatles "Revolution 9" on
their "White Album" This one features Vince and Alison reading
passages, over and over again, spliced at odd points. Having heard
various people do work of this nature over the years, I've never been
a big fan of them as a whole, but this one is fairly intersting. I've
actually found myself listening to it multiple times, despite the
almost complete lack of any musical instruments.

The album as a whole holds up pretty good, and is a great
representative piece of the early 80s electronic music that was
around at the time.

1. Don't Go 7. Only You
2. Too Pieces 8. Goodbye Seventies

5. Midnight 11. Bring Your Love Down (Didn't)
