Description
Basically, this was a rip off of Sugar Smacks. Little puffed pieces of rice in a bag instead of a box. Pretty good as I remember it.

What I didn't understand about Popeye was why it was in those flimsy plastic bags? That's gotta be a pain when you have to reclose it! Couldn't they have used boxes like everyone else? Just a thought.

Actually, Popeye was a line of low priced cereals put out by Stokely-Van Camp. These included Puffed Rice and Puffed Wheat. Bags are cheaper than boxes. Where a box of Puffed Wheat cost $1.00 you could get more cereal in a bag for 39 cents. Stokely-Van Camp was later acquired by Quaker. Quaker makes Quisp, so this was NOT a rip off.

Seriously? This cereal was bland and had to be masked with whatever you could find. Breakfast isn't supposed to be torture. I reminded my mom of that every time she made me eat that crap.

For some reason I remember a Popeye cereal that was also in a bag but it was like cocoa puffs. This could have been sometime in the early 90's or such and I'm sure the Popeye name has been associated with many different cereal types.

I didnt like this cereal too much as a kid, but my mom got it for us all the time. I used to sprinkle it with sugar till the puffs sank! :)

I'm 27 years old and I miss this cereal so much. I had it during the late 80s early 90s then it disappeared of the shelves forever. Bring back the golden ones that look like sailor hats, those were the best ones better than captain crunch.

Puffed Rice was/is nothing like Sugar Smacks so it is not a rip off of Sugar Smacks. Sugar Smacks was sugar coated puffed "wheat" not puffed "rice". Puffed Rice had no added sugar content, it was just puffed rice. Sugar Smacks was about 50% sugar by weight.

Ate this in the eighties when times were tough. The only nutrition was the milk and sugar you covered it in.
