Description
Sex: both
Type of clothing: hat/hair accessory
When it was popular: mid 80's-90
Description: A patterned handkerchief, formerly used as a cover for women's curlers or as a street gang accessory. Popularized by Axl Rose, the 'Do Rag was folded in half (into a triangle shape), then the three ends were tied and tucked at the back of the head, thus producing a skullcap sort of effect. The typical colors of red and blue gave way to the manufacturing of pink and a veritable rainbow of other colors as the fad progressed.

Do rags are great for protecting your hair when painting. I'm a part-time house painter, and wear them all the time when painting. Not just for gang bangers!!

For some reason, I associate these with showbiz wrestlers and bodybuilders. In the 80s and 90s, they were worn a lot of times with bright-colored, extremely full pants with tight ankles, the kind they call Hammer Pants now (but they didn't call them that then).

I met my husband back in 1991 and he was still wearing these deals! He actually still has a few from back then. Everytime I open up his sock drawer I gotta laugh 'cuz there they are, 1 pink zebra stripe and 1 light blue zebra stripe! Too funny, I have no idea why he still has them. But I'm not about to throw them away, they make me smile:)

I've always wore them and I'm in my 40s. I think it actually started out as a biker thing, then the rockers picked it up. a lot of the gang bangers wore them with the knot up front for some reason. I like them for the simple fact I can wear one under a hardhat or a helmet.
