I think I had mine around 1985. It was cool to do a special knot on each end of the shoelace instead of tieing them. I thought i was soooo cool!!! Oh, and of course it was coolest to not wear any socks w/ them.
I HAD to have these before entering freshman year or I would have DIED (that's the story I told my mother, anyway!) Yes, the shoestrings had to be looped in a spiral and tucked a certain way so they could be slipped on.
We wore Eastland brand shoes that had the shoestrings looped and tucked. It was an absolute must about 1986. Yes, this was the absolute for the preppy.
They were called Topsiders and they were made by Sperry.

I thought the girls looked amazing wearing socks slouched with sebeagos. I miss the look me as a male also enjoyed wearing mine and with shorts I always wore socks and continue to this day with speery's.I was turned on to women and girls who wore them.I'm glad to see that girls are wearing socks with the topsiders again.
