C'mon... Monkey boots are nothing like Docs other than having been sold in the same shops. They're far more streamlined, far more stable in the sole, were much less expensive, and in my humble opinion- more comfortable. I preferred the black nubuck ones from NaNa. In fact, I still have a brand new pair that have been sitting in their original box for some 15 years or so- I just don't have the heart to ruin them!

My first pair of Monkey Boots were killer!! I did everything in 'em. (Yeah, including that.) And while my friends were sitting around changing from their Doc's to their SK8 shoes, I was already rippin it up in my Monkeys.

They were by far one of the best pair of shoes I ever owned. I had the blue suede NaNas. Loved them on stage. If anyone knows where/if they are still available, please leave a link.

Yep!!! Loved em too! Had the black suede! this is on top of having a handful of creepers, dock boots and doc shoes, regular AND steel cap, converse, parachute boots, winos and the like. the only thing was the soles left the worst black streaks on my girlfriend's mom's kitchen tile!!!! but anyway, the suede monks were awesome!

You can still find original Monkey Boots made by Grafters only in England, and if you go to ebay.com find the seller named sugarspoon66, and he has a lot of 'em in different sizes. They are made in the Zcheck Republic, and they come in wine red and black. I own 2 pairs, and they are very comfortable.
Kim - March 02, 2009 - Report this comment
I made a mistake in the spelling of the seller of Monkey boots on ebay.com. His name should be sugarspun66 not sugarspoon66. Sorry for the inconvenience.

I wore my Monkey's and Creepers everywhere. Used to get them at NaNa's in Pasadena along with all of my punk T's. Clothes at the thrift store only of course. Back when punk was punk, and everything else was lame.

I bought my first pair at NaNa's in Santa Monica back in the 84. I wore them everywhere with all things. They just fit perfectly. Later I bought a tan pair. I wore those to a corporate office with grey and brown clothing, but the boss said they were inappropriate. He was trying to affect a Wall-Street look. Foolish man.

There are many look a likes and koock offs but only one true Monkey Boot an dthey are made by Grafton. I have looked far and wide for GRAFTERS ORIGINAL MONKEY BOOTS in the US but only found UK stores that sell them. Do a search for "GRAFTERS ORIGINAL MONKEY BOOT" on Ebay and you will find them for around $100 delivered to the states.

I grew up in L.A. and also bought my first pair of monkey boots at NaNa's in Santa Monica. I can't find them anywhere in the states so picked up 2 pairs in the UK when I was there recently. Best place to order them online is jamesandjames.com, fair price, real Grafters, and reasonable shipping to the states.

NaNa Monkey Boots were the BEST! Wish I had held onto them, but I think I probably wore the sole through to the ground. The new Monkey Boots just don't look the same. :(

I had a pair in 1984. I was a 14 year old girl stompin round in those ugly boots. Mine were originals made in Czech. I liked em cause they were funny lookin. Not the comfiest boot however. I ended up switching to my staple boot which were a pair of steel toe Gorilla's purchased at the army navy store on Hollywood Blvd.

Started looking for these some time ago and eventually stumbled onto this site. I just received my Grafters in the mail yesterday and must say I am quite pleased. While I remember NaNas having a loop on the back similar to Docs I challenge you to find another difference. The Dr. Martens version have the wrong sole and the TUKs versions seem to be a cheaply made trendy crap. Anyone else have a pair of Grafters? I would love to hear how you compare/rate them.

Bought my first and only pair of monkeys at NaNa's in Santa Monica back in the 80s. They are STILL going strong, but then I am lucky to be very easy on shoes.

It's really great to still hear so much passion about shoes! I'm one of the original owners of NaNa, designed most of the shoes we sold and am thrilled we had such an impact on so many people! We had a blast throughout most of our history, as well (that's another story!), but none of it would have been possible without YOU! The purists out there may not like the following, but I did design a more comfy, updated version of monkey boots a couple years ago- not an attempt to re-make them, but more of a tip o' the hat to them. Not quite so much work to break these in, either! You can pick over the scraps for cheap: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170437491803&ssPageName=STRK:MESE:IT#ht_500wt_922

Having worn Creepers during high school (84-88), my brother and i wanted a bit of a change. Didn't want to go the Doc Martin route, we found a store in Ventura, Ca. carrying these wonderful gems. I git the black leather and my brother got black suede. Best shoes ever!!!! Out lasted the Docs i bought 3 years after my first pair of Monkey boots.

Had a pair very early 80s and yes they did leave black streaks on the floors but they were polarizing, loved or hated. Wore them till they fell apart. Thinking of another pair now that I am approaching my 50th bday.

Lived in Nana Monkey boots in the late 80's and 90's, the black leather and black suede. Best shoes ever!! Loved them! Wore them to drum in and everywear else! The Grafters are a good remake but run a little big. The Nana Monkey redesign are nice too. Hey, at least we can still get them, or their close copy. But nothing like the original good quality shiny leather ones, and the insoles were all leather too! Excellent boots! Solid, could walk all day in them everyday!

Me Mam bought me my first pair of Monkey boots, from army and navy stores in Salford (Manchester) in 1975 - I was 14. Just ordered my second pair, 40 years later. Happy memories of being a 'cool' school girl. Can't wait to 'rock' monkey boots again - aged 54!!!

Oh my god, I ad monkey boots in the late 70's. Got them from the local army and navy store. They still sell them. I had forgotten how much fun they were. So, thanks for this reminder. I will be walking across France this summer, aged 52 and I will be doing it in Monkey Boots!!
Pat - August 17, 2015 - Report this comment
I remember wearing the original Czech made black Monkey Boots as a boy in the 1970s. They were great for keeping the school bullies at bay as they had very hard soles and were notorious for causing very painful shin bruises when kicked by someone wearing them! I wore them all through my high school years from 12 to 17 and despite being small for my age, was never picked on unlike the other kids of my size who didn't wear them. Later in the 1980s, I met a girl in Monkey Boots who used to travel into town on the bus every Saturday with her two friends.

Grafters Monkey Boots are awesome! I wore them through the '80s and the early '90s. Then they just disappeared here in the U.S. I'm 50 now, and just got a pair delivered to me today from the UK!

I bought my monkey boots in mid 80's at Edge City in 5 points Jacksonville Florida, I have never seen them before but I immediately took a liking to them and the only pair they had fit me perfectly so I bought them right away. It was shinny black one made in Czechcoslovakia(before it split into Czech Republic and Slovakia) and wore them through the 80's. It was a cool boots that I really enjoyed during period that I have such a fond memory of.

That say NANA with the pic of the skull on them made in Czechoslovakia..I love them and I miss having the original pair ... Not quite the same as the fake ones... Wish they made them like they use too..

Nancy, I spent a ton of money at your shop and yes, the Monkey Boot skidmarks!! My mother had a standing house rule that anyone coming over in Monkey Boots had to leave them by the front door (or I had to clean the kitchen floor the next day)

Nice to read these comments what memories of the monkey boots. I was punk in the early 80's and had a pair made in old Czechoslovakia. I also had a few creeps and doc's, but the monkey boot was my favorite and my "go to shoe" i can't say where they were purchased because my gf (now my wife)purchased them as a gift. I wish I still had them, but my mom boxed all my creeps, docs, along with the monkeys and took them to the Goodwill when i moved out (damn! unforgivable mom) Anyway, I'm here because my teenage daughter was asking me about punk music and fashion, she at least got a pair of doc's her mom used to wear. As for the monkey boot, i'm gonna order a pair just because they're cool for an old guy. Peace :)

Glad to see that so many people loved these boots. I had my 1st pair when i was 13yrs old in 1970, Doc's were quite hard to find and expensive back then so we all wore Monkeys until we could find and afford Doc's. I still have an unworn original pair of Czech CEBO Monkeys that i've kept for i don't know how many years, think they'll have to go to the Monkey Boot Museum? or possibly ebay. Seems these boots are still available from Rakuten (Japan), $210.00 US about £163.00 UK!! Keep 'Monkey-ing'

I always remember being kicked in the leg by a kid wearing monkey boots while I was waiting in the school dinner queue, because he thought I'd taken his place in the queue (which I hadn't!) It was incredibly painful and caused a bleeding wound and then a large and very painful bruise which remained for many, many days afterwards! He was always getting into scuffles and arguments with other kids and he never hesitated to use his boots in a similar way to disable any kid who opposed him. He always played out with his mates and came to school in his monkey boots, so it was almost impossible to 'get him back' without receiving another nasty kick from him! So my childhood memories of these boots is a tad tarnished... LOL!!

I had NaNas monkey boots from 1985 - 1990, when I went to Scotland and bought a new pair: Grafters. They were exactly the same as the NaNas, and then someone told me NaNas were licensed from Grafters. Anyway, monkey boots: Fishbone, The Untouchables, various incarnations of The Beat...many good shows in monkey boots.
