They had great stuff, but if you wanted to save money and get quality clothing, you would shop their other store: Kidsmart. Kidsmart carried Healthtex, Dolphin, IZOD, Polo, Levis, and other major labels in the 1980's. They usually bought in bulk to pass on the savings, or shipped overstock from LFS to the store as a mark-down. I had a great time workinig for them

I shopped at the one in the Thousand Oaks Mall in the early 80's when I was about 6-9. That's where I got my purple corduroy knickers with the matching top that had pink and purple hearts on it. A drop waist dress in black, red, and white. And a shiny light pink tuxedo shirt with grey polka dots and a bow tie. I wish I'd kept all that stuff. And the TO store had a slide!

Wow...I remember this place as a kid. Me and my little sister would play on the slide while our parents shopped. The old long beach mall had a store there. Brings back great memories! What ever happened to them anyways? Does anyone have any old pix of the store sign?

I was working in the Del Amo Mall store in Torrance, CA in 1982 when Kristy Swanson and her Mom came in to buy a huge new wardrobe for Kristy. She was very shy and quiet but her Mom said, "Remember her name because she's going to be a big star!" Well, Mom, uh, kinda but not really big!

Sean, I did some research and it looks like your commercial was filmed at Farnsworth Park in LA.
LarreJean - October 19, 2015 - Report this comment
Sean, I apologize, I was mistaken. It was Griffith Park, not Farnsworth Park. I hope this helps you. I noticed while researching that your sister worked with you occasionally. She sounds pretty awesome.

Something clicked in my mind today and I thought of The Little Folk Shop from the 1970's so here I am: mom would take me to the store at Pico & Westwood Blvd in West LA, now the site of the Westside Pavilion. What I recall most about the store is the maze-like climbing structure for us kids that seemed to go throughout the store, with ladders that would lead to fort-like enclosures where kids could pretend and dream. And I think I even recall the changing room "trees" referred to above.

The Little Folks Shop in Lakewood Mall also had a slide. I loved the clothes there. My mom and I would go in there whenever we would go to the mall, sometimes just because I wanted to go on the slide. And my grandmother and I would do a lot of back to school shopping there.

I was their district manager and was responsible for opening all locations. I stayed with them through the sale to a priviate individual and helped develop them Kids Mart concept. It was then sold to the FW Woolworth Corporation and ended up closing several years later.

I worked as an accountant in their main office in City of Industry. It was my first accounting job and worked there from 82 - 85. By the time I joined they had stopped opening new little folks shops and were concentrating on Kids Marts. Woolworth bought them in 83 or 84 and they expanded across the country. Like many specialty retailers they were hurt by the big box stores and went out of business in the late 80’s early 90’s.

I do remember the location at the Mission Viejo Mall. I remember my mom bringing my brother and I there in the early-mid 80s. It was on the mall’s first floor, near what was then Bullock’s. I can’t remember the clothes, but do remember a play are with a slide. I never knew what happened to it and never knew that it was a chain until now.

First came to work with them as a district manager when Herb Holtzman owned the company and had just 3 or 4 locations. Helped develop the company to grow in the Los Angeles area to many locations, and when the company was sold to Walter Podres helped to develop the Kids Mart division as well, and expanded to the company nationwide with hundreds of stores. Transitioned to Woolworth when they purchased it in the mid 80's and just retired 2 years ago from Woolworth.

Does anyone recall if there was a location at the Beverly Center or the Santa Monica Mall?
Stephanie Prince - December 31, 2022 - Report this comment
I do recall the location in the Beverly center as that is the one that I was taken to shop at. My father was part owner with a group of others or some type of investor and that's when I was taken to shop at the little folk shop in the Beverly center. Funny thing my daddy owning the store I never did understand why we still paid for the clothes back then as a little girl in middle school but grown up now and thank God my dad is still here I do understand why we still paid when we shopped that the little folk shop. It was the right thing to do and not to make a big fuss about one of the owners coming in it was just the right thing to do.

LITTLE FOLKS SHOP in the ARCADIA MALL back in 1991 was my second job in High School. I loved it working there. I already had a son my senior year of High school, So having an employee discount helped. But when the clearance came, that's when I went all out. My Manager was Laura Kibbie, she was the best! I miss those days! simple days!
