We also made jewelry out of safety pins attaching several together for bracelets and earrings!

I remember first seeing English punks with safety pins through their faces in the late 70s and cringing - this was long before piercing became common, but safety pins were perhaps the symbol of punk style in the late 70s/early 80s. In the late 70s, you sometimes saw people with a (preferably old-looking) safety pin pinned on their jacket or shirt as a nod to current punk trends.
