Many of us wore them about 1979-1984. I wish I could remember the brand of the ones we wore with drill team outfits, looked like saddles but had three "stripes" of leather on sides instead of one fat one like regular saddles.

I loved these! I had some that were baby blue & white & the traditional black & white too. The baby blue ones were my faves though.

I work in shoes and have for a long time.... a lot of schools in Austin, Tx have actually made these the dress code. I only know of Keds brand making them.

I remember all-white saddle shoes were popular. They had kind of a curvy stitch going on one side. I loved them..

When I was in high school in the early 80s, girls wore these with their cheerleading uniforms before sneakers were the prefered shoe. I have a pair I bought to wear with my poodle skirt for costume parties, since this style was VERY popular in the 50s too

Some primary schools in the Midwest still use these as a part of their uniform and you can buy them on the website for Payless Shoes. I bought some in 2006 for a Halloween costume (50's girl). I also remember wearing them in the same year noted above (1983)!

I hated these shoes because of the braces used with these shoes for my feet and ankles!

I would also like to know the brand name of the saddle shoes with the 3 stripes. If anyone knows...

I wore saddles with cuffed cable knee socks and shetland crew neck sweaters. A white shirt collar and wool shorts or a kilt was the preppy look or dorky look depending n your perspective !!! But my collars were starched !!!

Saddle shoes were originally a male shoe. I've worn them off an on (mostly on) since age 2 (1949). I presently have ten pairs, mostly some color and white, but a couple odd ones... tan/navy, brown, tan suede, etc. So many guys have fallen into the trap that since females wear them, they're somehow "girls shoes". I get many compliments all the time, and know that many men my age wish they could muster the courage to wear them. My wife also has a few pair, and occasionally we wear matching saddle shoes.

I still think of this as a 1950s style. A lot of 1950s styles were revived in the early 80s (penny loafers, deck shoes, bustiers, Raybans, etc), but I don't remember saddle shoes being one of them. I do remember cheerleaders where I lived wearing them with their uniforms in the late 70s/early 80s, but only with their uniforms.

I graduated in 85 and up until 8th grade that's the only kind of shoes I wore.My blouses were always starched and cuffed socks too.

In Kindergarten (1969) I didn't want to be caught dead in them. My Senior year (1982) I was dying for them. Weren't they a bear to break in, though? I remember mashing in that back heel over and over.

Loved these shoes; they were the pits to break in; I loved the ones with the white soles. I would love to have a pair today; once broken in, they were the best.

When I was in grade school I had to wear my sisters hand me down saddle shes. I think I was the only boy in my school that wore saddle shoes so I hated them. I now own 6 pairs of black & white saddles and wear them when ever I get the opportunity. 5 pairs are ladies and 1 pair are mens but because saddle shoes are unisex you really can't tell the difference. My favorite saddle shoe are the Willits similar to the ones shown in the picture. I always wear my saddles with cuffed white socks, loads of compliments on my shoes. Anyone know where you can buy mens saddle shoes in Canada?

In 1980ish I bought a pair of saddle shoes, I guess they were coming back in style then. I loved them. They were white and Navy Blue and at the bottom of the shoe they were white rubber with a small heel. I hope I can find them somewhere, I miss them. I moved that next year and I lost them. After that I could not find them in any shoe store.

At St.Anthony Catholic High School our dress code is: •For Regular Uniform days, the girls may wear the following: •short sleeve or 3/4 sleeve white blouse •white embroidered polo shirt •plaid skirt or skort •saddle shoes black and white only •knee-high maroon, gray, or white socks I must admit I love the fact that saddle shoe are part of our dress code.

James, nice write up. At least your sister's saddle shoes were already broken in. I have a pair of pink and white ones on now -- pink is ok for men these days. Always happy to chat about saddle shoes at bllbolen@netscape.net

I wore Spalding saddle shoes in the late '50s in college. At least half the guys there had a pair. I still wear them now. Every once in a while some vintage Spaldings come up for sale in my size on e-bay. I receive many positive comments, even from those who weren't around back then.

I had a pair of the basic black/white saddle shoes for early 1980 casual wear. They were the rage then with jeans. Now I hear they are coming back! I m so excited to get a pair and I m middle aged. Slacks yes. Skirts..... depends on style of the shoe?

Im likely a little older than most here growing up in the 60’s and 70’s. In grade school girls wore saddle shoes mostly black and white or brown and brown (shoe was suave, saddle was not). In the 70’s when Happy Day’s made it to TV there was a resurgence of saddle shoes but this time boys and girls wore them. In high school several classmates (boys) wore black and white saddle shoes. I myself wore a dark blue and bone colored saddle shoe with blue jeans. As an adult they’ve made periodic come backs. I still have a two tone brown pair I really like wearing though at this time they aren’t kept in stock in the stores.
