When it was popular: early 1980's
Description: Add-a-bead necklaces were usually gold, and females purchased various gold and sometimes other colored beads to add to the necklace. The more beads you had the better. These were popular in the very early 80's and were worn with the preppy look - i.e. crewneck sweaters or Izod/Polo shirts.

Oh, I remember my add a bead necklace!!!! I always got a new gold bead for my birthday and a painted bead for Christmas. I think I had almost a whole necklace by the time I was done. Too bad I lost the necklace. It was my favorite!!

I have a add-a-bead bracelet from the '90s. The beads are gold flowers and animals with different gems in them.

i remember these! i had one almost filled with gold beads and black onyx, some my boyfriend had given me. they are now in the plough mud at cherry grove beach sc as i thought you had to dress up to lay out to get a tan back then and it broke and i watched them fall thru the cracks into the mud!!!!! how i still long for those good on days in the early 80's.
