Description
Sex: Female
Type of clothing: Accessory
When it was popular: Late 80s
Description: This was a good look. Not only did every single piece of women's dress clothing come styled with gigantic, linebacker-size built-in shoulder pads, T-shirts and sweaters were equipped with them, too. If an item was sold sans-pads, never fear! Shoulder pads could be purchased in pairs and then fastened around your bra straps with a piece of velcro. You wouldn't be caught dead without shoulder pads: dressed up or down, they were worn with absolutely everything. My favourite outfit was a big T-shirt and slip-in shoulder pads worn with stirrup pants. Think of Joan Crawford & Belinda Carlisle's lovechild and you get the idea.

Winters were hell. You would wear your cute, satiny blouse with pads in it, then a Cosby-Newhart style sweater, which also came with pads, then put on your winter coat, and IT had pads. By the time you left the house you would look like a deformed person. The fad was huge, but so were our shoulders.

I could not stand shoulder pads. I eventually cut them out and just wore my shirts without them on.

shoulder pads were popular pretty much through out the whole decade 1981-1989 and also the early 90's.

These still give me nightmares.

Shoulder Pads were my life in the 80s, the bigger the better. When Express first opened you could use the shoulder pads they put in their shirts as floatation devices. Then you put on a fat belt with your shirt and you look like Vivian Leigh.

My mom (now in her 50's) was a huge shoulder pad freak and still wears them. She has a whole drawer full of these, accumulated in the 80's. I think they were designed to help even out pear shaped figures but it went way too far!

Oh Man! I so hated shoulder pads, every stinkin thing you bought back then had shoulder pads! I'd end up cutting them out!

I'd cut them out and stuff them in my bra.

Shoulder pads are back and women are wearing them with updos and ponytails. Their heads look tiny with those linebacker shoulders. The big hair was there for a reason...to balance the big shoulders.

I hated shoulder pads back then and still hate them today. I am so glad I don't "have to" wear them anymore. I wish I would've spoken up back then and told my mother that I hated shoulder pads. No, it's not a good look. Shoulder pads are stupid, uncomfortable, and itchy. Elizabeth, that's hilarious. I wonder how many girls actually cut them out and stuffed them into their bra.

I remember when designers first showed these en masse in their 80s form in Fall '78. At the time, they looked awkward and people laughed at them, thought no one would never wear them. But a few years later, designers were still showing them and everyone wore them all the time. It was really kinda hard for women to buy a garment without shoulder pads for much of the 80s. I know of some women with sloping shoulders who miss them, thought they filled out their shape and made them look more balanced. And there was some large-shouldered menswear in the 80s, too. Trendy men's jackets often had unusually wide shoulders at the time.

I have wide shoulders, so I always removed them if they were present in a blouse i bought. They were horrible!!

If you have narrow shoulders and wide hips they can really even things out though!
