I had several pairs of penny loafers in the mid 80's, and no you could not put a penny in them if they were the black or blue ones. I used to were my loafers with a sweater and sweater skirt outfit with slouchy socks!

This was another of those styles that you wouldn't have been caught dead in in the 1970s, when they were associated with the backward 1950s. Then in the early 80s they came back, along with topsiders, twin sets, and a host of other once-outdated styles. I only owned a pair of dress penny loafers, with extended soles. Then never were comfortable, too stiff, like a lot of 1950s-style men's shoes.

I loved my penny loafers in grades 2-3 (1984-1986). After that it seemed like they just stopped selling them in most shoe stores, although you can find them now. I wish they would come back in style full force.

Bass penny loafers, khakis, and a polo shirt with collar up.

I always loved to see girls or women in 50's Oldmaine Trotters. The design along with the soft handsewn leathers would make any woman's feet VERY sexy...and not to mention her bare feet in the loafers which would create a unique BUT very sexy smell.

No proper preppy went without these or Sperry Topsiders. You had to put a penny in them too. Brown only for guys.
