Description
Made by the same company as Lemonheads, Redhots, and Boston Baked Beans. Small, purple, grape-flavored candies. Very tart! They were my favorite, but I haven't seen them in years.

I see these at the Dollar Tree, which is a nationwide chain. They have all the other flavors too, and since it's a dollar store you get a good-sized bag for only $1.

Hey, everyone. If any of yous live in the Chicago, IL area then I hear that there is this store off of State Street. It is supposed to be some big candy warehouse that sells all the "old school" candy and gum and other snacks. I hope this helps.

i actually work for the company and have been there since Alex. the grape were being made. Grapeheads are the EXACT same formula as Alex the grape. the same goes for appleheads (johnny apple treats) and cherry heads (cherry clans). you can find them at walgreens, most dollar stores and wal mart.

i remember alander the grape when i was like 12 yrs old, i used to buy these at a local deli and i would bite the outer coating off, eat it and throw away the hard inside. Boy they were sour, but good! the johnny apple treats were a favorite of my brother and my sister loved the atomic fireballs. maybe i can find these new ones and give them out for christmas!

I agree, grape heads taste nothing like Alexander Grape, sorry but I have to pull the fabrication flag on the whole same formula line.

The company that presumably still makes AtG is called Ferrara Pan. I liked the taste of them, but I hated how they would quite frequently turn your tongue purple.
NESHA - January 04, 2011 - Report this comment
Grapeheades do not taste like alexander the grape
JRL - December 08, 2011 - Report this comment
Grape Heads taste exactly the same as Alexander the Grape because they ARE the exact same thing, made with the same formula, by the same company. A Ferrara Pan employee even left a comment, previously, saying so. I've had both the old and new (including the lemon, orange, cherry, and apple varieties) and they are the same as they've always been (though some are smallm while some large and individually wrapped). I think someone's nostalgia is interfering with their taste buds' communication to the brain.
Tiombe - February 08, 2012 - Report this comment
They absolutely do NOT taste the same. Appleheads taste like the Johnny Apple Treats, but they ruined Alexander the Grapes...I miss this candy from my childhood!

New ones are nasty. Bring back the old ATG! Best candy ever.
hetty - June 05, 2012 - Report this comment
i tasted the mixture of the the"heads" in a box from the dollar tree and i do think they taste a BIT different but still good:) do y'all know your taste buds change as we get older? thats why there are things we used to love as kids that we hate now and visa versa. i wish though they still came in the old timey boxes we remember and by the orginal names:)

Alexander the grape tasted like a lemon head but was purple. Yum yum. Woke up thinking about that candy today. Grape heads ugh
geekyman - November 06, 2013 - Report this comment
I happen to know that person doesn't work for ferrara pan because theyd know they couldn't use the same recipe due to one of the ingredients being banned in the US and 2. the closest replacement ingredient would cost too much due to it having to be imported from Norway and the fact its all natural I do food chemistry on the side as a hobby

That employee must be lying. The Grapeheads taste nothing like ATG. The texture of the litter coating is even different.

I AGREE 100 PERCENT GRAPEHEADS ARE NOTHING LIKE AXLENDER THE GRAPE NO HOW NO WAY I HAVENT EATIN AXLENDER SINCE THE EARLY 1990S WOW THOSE WERE THE DAYS WHEN DID THEY STOP MAKING THE GRAPE.
Toni - November 01, 2014 - Report this comment
Grapeheads are not even close to Alexander the Grape candy. The formula has definitely changed!!! Grapeheads have a nasty after taste & lack the sour kick of ATG. Bring back the original please.
IT'S JUST CANDY, BUT... - February 23, 2015 - Report this comment
GRAPEHEADS TASTE JUST LIKE THE ATG TO ME... BUT THERE ARE MANY CANDIES AND CHOCOLATES THAT I FEEL CHANGED THE FLAVORS THAT OTHER PEOPLE SAY TASTE EXCTLY THE SAME... SO IT COULD JUST BE THAT YOUR OPINION ON THAT FLAVOR HAS CHANGED AS YOU GOT OLDER...IT'S NOT THAT IMPOSSIBLE FOR THAT TO BE TRUE... AND IF THAT IS A MEDICAL IMPOSSIBILITY, WELL - IT'S JUST CANDY... NOT THE END OF THE WORLD....

I know I'm not crazy. I remember a candy from the 70's that had the same texture as candy cigarettes. They were long, flat, rectangular sticks with indented lines so you could snap them apart and eat them a square at a time if you wanted. The flavor was an extremely strong grape flavor, somewhat tart. I could SWEAR that was Alexander The Grape. Grapeheads are NOT the same if this is the case. I know for a fact this candy existed. Whether or not it was actually Alexander The Grape I can't say with 100% certainty, but I'm pretty sure I'm right.

Really would love if the company brings back, Alexander the Grape, Cherry Clans, and Boston Baked Beans. The lemonhead candy line doesn't taste anything like the candy in my younger years. I would go to Mrs Wilson's every morning before school and after school and get boxes of Alexander the Grape and Cherry Clans. Please bring back the old fashion candy that we grow to love....even if it's just for a limited time! I'm for sure you'll make money off of it. I'm for sure I'll be buying them until you stop making them.

What a great name!

I saw the comment about Grapeheads being the same formula, I personally think it is an attempt at a psychological ploy. Tell them it is so and they will believe it, then their minds will tell them it tastes the same. It did not work and I can tell the difference. Wish the real deal would come back to store shelves. I miss Alexander the Grape.
Storhm - June 20, 2016 - Report this comment
The funny thing I personally wrote the company and they tried to feed me the same line about it being the same formula. As if! These knew graph heads are far from Alexander the Grape, they aren't even the same color. Nor as tart. Alexander the Grape had a lot of dye in them but I loved them all the same and Cherry Clans. Yes I agree with everyone they need to stop playing and bring the original back!

I came on here because I just bought some Grapeheads, was all excited, because I finally found some, knew they had changed the name from Alexander the Grape. I cleaned the store out in fact. I open the first box, starting chewing on them, and then WTF am I eating. These are not Alexander the Grape. I WANT ALEXANDER THE GRAPE.

I agree 100% that Grapeheads are not the same as the original Alexander the Grape from the '80s. Here's what I remember: the original Alexander the Grape's came in a blue and white box with a green helmet on the grape character. They stopped being available for years, but then they "came back," maybe in the early-to-mid 2000's. They tasted NOTHING like Alexander the Grape. The name was then changed pretty quickly to "Grapeheads," which tasted just like the "new" ATG, but still nothing like the original. If the company is saying that Grapeheads are the same formula as ATG, they're probably referencing the "new" ATGs made in the 2000s, not the originals.

Ferara Pan Candy Co. made ATG candy in Forest Park, IL. Ferara began in 1924 on Chicago's west side, on Taylor St. near Western Av. Among its popular brands, Red Hots candy. Alexander the Grape was made from 1981 to '91, later becoming Grape Heads.
Bruce - September 18, 2021 - Report this comment
I think CLif must be correct, that if Grapehads and ATG have the same formula, it's the new ATG, not the classic from the 80s. The new one is not nearly as hard as the original, and you can't suck the outer sour layer and get to a hard, sweet, white-colored center. It's not the same as Ferrara Pan's ATG.

Read on here that we should patronize other products and not just Dutch Mill Donuts. That's cool. I have a new perspective in life.
