Yay for Carnation Breakfast Squares!! Every once in awhile I get nostalgic and do a google on these to see if by some crazy chance they are being brought back to us sad and wistful consumers...I'm glad to see I'm not alone in my pining. I remember chocolate, vanilla and cinnamon flavors with a slightly grainy texture - and that my cousin Chris was so mad at me for eating the last chocolate pack of two. Sigh.

These were my favorite during the early 70's. 2 per package were the perfect amount. We would take them camping, so easy to pack and no mess. Carnation are you listening? Please bring them back! Chocolate was my favorite also.

I think the Breakfast Bar is also great, but it's definitely not the same as the Breakfast Square, which predates the Breakfast Bar. Is there a petition to bring back the Square? I love them both and hope if they do bring them back, they don't change the recipe (sometime in the late 80s I think they changed the taste of the breakfast bars and it was not for the better!)

My mom gave me breakfast squares (yes, two in a package..mmmmm) and breakfast bars in the morning. That is a taste I have been craving for a very long time. MAN! If I found them again, I think I'd scarf down a box of each flavor within a day!

OMG... I was search today for Breakfast Squares, I googled(hard to find grocer) hoping to satisfy that taste I continuously long for. I can't believe there are others. I wan these Squares so bad. Remember, there were Carnation Breakfast Bars and then there were the Breakfast Squares. The Breakfast Bar could have fit right in with today's funky Carb bars as far as looks, but it had a chocolate coat, some type of oaty inside next a crunchy something or other and chocolate chips. The Breakfast Square required quite a bit of milk in order to make it through that 2nd square. Surprising that only the PopTart survived the 70s. Don't know why they quit on the Vanilla Chocolate P-Tart . . .

carnation, carnation, how could you dare? stop making the scrumptious breakfast square! All I can do is think back in time, and it is quite torture to only taste them in my mind. Then when I do this I start to drool, I'm sure that at this point I look like a fool! If you would just listen to all of us who write - and bring back that recipe and make it just right, everyone would be buying them because they're so good. This is the truth, there would be no doubt, that if you brought these bars back you would have a big fat account! I remember the breakfast squares. I was already hard core into health food, and these tasted awful! I have come across protein bars now with that same bizarre mealy texture and taste. Not something I want to relive.

I thought these tasted okay. But really, how healthy do you actually think they were? You'd be better off just skipping breakfast.

My Grandma always had them when I came over and she knew when I got there they would be gone. I found an Atkins bar that reminds me of the flavor it's called Atkins Morning "Cinnamon Bun flavor." It's good but not as good as the original breakfast squares.

YES! I just googled "breakfast squares" to see if there was anything about them on the web. They were around at least as early as the early 70's when I started eating them. My favorites were cinnamon and butterscotch.

Petitioning Carnation to make them would be rather ironic since Carnations' breakfast product was and is Instant Breakfast. The earlier poster who said they were General Mills is correct.

I was attending CMSU in Warrensburg MO in 1973, and rented a $5 a week room in an elderly ladies upstairs. I'd go home some weekends and my mom would send a "care package" back to school with me. It would always include a box of cinnamon flavored Carnation Breakfast Squares. They tasted kinda weird, but I think I was addicted to them! I still remember the taste and texture.

i lost 130 lbs eating slender bars or figurines for lunch. they (slender bars) had celluose in them, so they filled you up. i'd love to have them back.

Breakfast Squares were available in 4 flavors: chocolate, butter pecan (or was that butterscotch?), chocolate malt, and cinnamon. Not sure who made them. Commercial showed each one broken in half. But Carnation Breakfast Bars were different; it was chocolate coated, not unlike many of the protein bars of today. One commercial showed a school coach whose team "used to head for the candy machine" after a workout, but now took "a nutrition break."

i used to walk several blocks to the a&p grocery store just to buy them and take to school for a snack and yes they were goooood i wished they would bring them back i would try to buy a case of them.

Okay who made them General Mills or Carnation? I thought it was General Mills... They were the best. I only remember three flavors - chocolate (the best), cinnamon (or spice) and vanilla. All flavors were good but I would devour the chocolate. And they were so good with milk. I looked for them everytime I went to a grocery store for years - maybe until 95 then I finally gave up. They need to be brought back or we need to pool our money and buy the recipe and start up our own company.

WOW-I have actually sent a letter to Carnation, and no one there knew what I was talking about. There were Vanilla, chocolate and cinnamon-not sure about the other flavors mentioned. These things were awesome sold in a box of 6 2-packs, whilte wrapper with a foil inside---friggen great. At least I know me and my brother aren't insane-we remembered eating them all the time Bring them back

Recently I bought a box of Slim Fast optima bars (chewy granola chocolate chip) and had a flashback--these taste like the Carnation Instant breakfast bars I loved as a kid!! Not as good as orininal ones, but since they're not made any more, these are close enough.

YESSSSS, I'm not the only one who remembers!! When I was a kid, in the early 70's I would save my allowance to buy a box of 12 in the variety box, chocolate, butterscotch? (I think) cinnamon-spice and vanilla something... I would tell myself I'd only eat one a day, so they'd last, but they never lasted more than a few days, I LOVED THEM, I wish they'd come back!

It sounds like everyone is talking about two or three different breakfast products. Breakfast Squares were made by General Mills in the 70's. They had an interesting flavor that continues to be missed 30 years later. I'm guessing that this was the first attempt at protein bars. The Flicker link above shows a picture of Breakfast Squares and the flavors in the variety pack. General Mills bought Pillsbury and Burger King. Nestle bought Carnation, which made Breakfast Bars. These are completely different from Breaskfast Squares.

OMG! I loved the Chocolate chip ones. Use to buy them in Jr. High school in the early 80's. LOVED THEM! I heard they were discontinued due to lack of sales but I find hard to beleive because it seems like a lot of people loved them and would continue eating them now. Oh the wonderful memory of the thick like poptart wrapped in the foil pouch (2 squares to a pack) That lightly frosted, sweet, sawdusty square that stuck to the roof of your mouth and made you crave a Big flass of iced cold milk to wash it down with! Chocolate, Vanilla, Strawberry and Cinnamon...Bring them all back!! Maybe there was something not good for you in it or maybe illegal like cocaine??? I'm surprised no one so far has mentioned that they became more moist somewhere along the line. I liked the original dry bars and was very disappointed when they changed the recipe. Soon after they were "moist", they discontinued them. My mother said they were too expensive and that's why people stopped buying them. I wonder how we could get the original recipe? I was also wondering how nutritious they were - are they just frosted cookies with vitamins and powdered milk added?

I sent an email to Carnation asking if they have plans to reintroduce the Vanilla, Chocolate and Cinnamon flavored wonderful cakey squares and after a long wait they responded w saying no. Maybe w enough interest, they will reconsider. Lets keep on them.

I am noticing that a lot on here are confusing the Carnation Breakfast Squares, (early to mid-'70's) with the Carnation Breakfast Bars......the Squares came before the Bars and here is my discription of the Squares.....I couldn't care less about the Bars.... They came 6 packs to a box and each pack had 2 squares. (I am not referring to the "bars" that came after these.) These squares were about 3/4" thick and each was about 3" X 3" square. They came in chocolate, vanilla, maybe cinnamon and butterscotch too. They were layered (about 4 layers consisting of an alternating thicker cake and firm icing), had a dryer consistency than a brownie, and had a semi-hard icing on the top.

Blue pack=vanilla, red pack=cinnamon, brown pack=chocolate. These were THE BEST! I always wish they were still made. Maybe the Vermont Country Store could help us out? I am so glad to know that I am not the only one who still thinks about them...

Seriously, I loved AND still love the Breakfast Squares and wish, wish, wish General Mills would bring them back. My sisters were into Pop Tarts, so that left all the Breakfast Squares for ME!!!! I have been reading these comments, and see that I am not the only one who loved these breakfast treats. I remember when I finally got my own place (early 80's) and looked all up and down the cereal aisle, but could only find lousy Breakfast Bars. And to this day, still no Breakfast Squares. Oh General Mills....please bring them back. The foil pouch, the chocolate shortbread style square!!! Yummy!!!!!!!!

I loved both of these. I remember at one point there were two chocolate varieties of the GM Breakfast Squares...so unique tasting and delicious. I'd once read that the reason they stopped making these was some nonsense about not being able to keep them on the shelves. The original Carnation Breakfast Bars were also great. I loved the peanut butter and chocolate chip the best. I've tried nearly every granola-like product available today in hopes of finding something resembling the Bars (it wasn't really a granola bar), and the very best are only barely mediocre, and in no way even resemble the bars. The corn syrups give them a lousy taste and many have an annoying chewy consistency because of it. I've never seen anyone buying this crap. I threw most of them away before finishing them. I'd also read that Carnation has denied that their Breakfast Bars ever existed! How convenient! It's amazing how little regard for the consumer these companies have today. Then there was the disappearance of the delicious but short-lived Kudos Pan Squares in the mid 90s. They came in peanut butter and strawberry & cream. But the last 'straw' was when Carnation changed the formula of their Instant Breakfasts about a decade or so ago. First time I tried the new formula, I thought I was crazy. Tried it again two years later and was again flabbergasted by how lousy it tasted...like flavorless watery chalk. The product of the 70s was a 10. The current product is a zero. How can they justify such a big change? I laugh everytime I see 'New Look, Same Great Taste' on the box. Carnation... you've gotta be kidding! To Nestle and General Mills...please restore these original products and rebuild your credibility with consumers!

My first love back then was Caramel Space Food Sticks followed by Chocolate Malt flavor Breakfast Squares... Yummmm! You can get Space Food Sticks now (just do an internet search) I wish someone would reverse engineer these too though.

I loved these also. The closest I have come to tasting anything like it is Grandma's Homestyle Fudge Chocolate Chip Cookie. Just something about those reminds me of the chocolate breakfast squares.

I concur. they were Carnation, they came in spice, chocolate and vanilla and there was some other flavor too. They were so incredibly good and so dry you could choke on them without milk. Chocolate were the best and the variety pack used to drive me nuts as I wanted all the chocolate and so did my sister. I really wish they would bring them back too.

Yep . . the chocolate ones came in the red box with red foil wrappers and the vanilla came in the blue box with blue foil wrappers. So great!

I loved these things.I got to eat them at my Grandma and Grandpas only. They had all of those horrible cereals like shredded wheat and bran cereals so I really loved my breakfast squares. I did like the breakfast bars also. I grabbed 1 or 2 and out the door I went. They also quit making my beloved Bucwheats, so I really got ripped. lol

I've been craving the breakfast squares for over 30 years. I just had a 'treat' that a coworker brought in that his wife made that made me immediately think of the chocolate breakfast squares. I've asked for the recipe and am hoping that I will get it soon. If anyone else is interested in the recipe, let me know and I'll see if she'll let me post it here.

It was the General Mills squares that I have yearned for these thirty plus years (I do also remember the Carnation bars, though). If they bring them back I only hope they will use original 1970's ingredients, no matter how "dangerous" they might be!

Yes, the breakfast squares were from General mills and not from Carnation. I remember finding these at a Shur Fine store years ago long after other stores stopped carrying these. The bars were described as a light meal, but I took a look at the ingredients and they had 17 grams of fat and almost 400 calories! (Plus a whole bunch of additives and so on) The first ingredient was sugar, followed by vegetable shortening. No wonder these tasted so good.

Please bring back the breakfast squares, all the flavors were very good. would love to have one every morning to start my day

how could anything so dry and crumbly be SO perfectly moist and delicious at the same time? there was some kind of spaceage witchcraft in these little squares, which had that ineffable, paradoxical texture that you could never explain to someone who hasn't actually had one. i would do dangerous things for a box of cinnamons, risking my own well being and that of several others, including strangers and children.

I can't believe other people loved these things as much as me. I remember the texture the most.It's to bad when you love something so much and you can't have it, it makes you want it more. Please help us and bring them back. The chocolate was the BEST!!!

I remember them, loved them, wish they were still around, and yes they had Vanilla ones. I guess the Food Police came and took them away or maybe it was just more cost effective to go with the powder Instant Breakfast.

I just sent an email to Carnation asking them to bring back their Breakfast Squares. These were my favorite breakfast & snack food when I was younger.I loved them. I think if more people went to their website & hit contact us then emailed them asking them to bring them back they would do it. Let's start a rally to get our Squares back! C'MON EVERYONE, EMAIL CARNATION. WE WANT OUR BREAKFAST SQUARES BACK!!! Give us our happy food. Great for on the go, breakfast, snacks, adults, kids, late nite sweet tooth, anything. YES!!!! I REMEMBER AND MISS THESE SO MUCH. THE CAROB CRUNCH FLAVOR WAS COMPLETELY UNIQUE..IT HAD THESE LITTLE ROUND CRISPIES IN IT. THE CHOCOLATE CRUNCH WAS GOOD TOO, BUT THE CAROB CRUNCH WERE INCREDIBLE. I HAVE NEVER TASTED ANYTHING EVEN CLOSE, AND I WOULD BUY THEM BY THE CASE IF THEY WERE AVAILABLE AGAIN.

I loved these Breakfast Squares. I haven't checked the link yet. I hope it works and that I'll be able to make these, since it appears that Carnation won't bring them back. Though the squares were a little dry and crumbly if you ate them alone, they were so good if drank cold milk along with them. (Another thing I miss, which I think was made by Kraft: Chicken Supreme. I won't give up till I find a recipe for this stuff. I'll never forget helping my mother make this dish--from the boxed kit--and wondering how the cooking sherry tasted. I found out it's horrid if you sip/drink it. But, it made the dish taste so good...along with the rice, crisp green peas, onion, pimiento and the creamy sauce.)

Didn't believe how many people liked these as well as I. So best I can say is if everyone that wished for them to come back would right to carnation and tell along with myself as I have done and keep contacting them maybe we could make it happen. So everyone start righting to them.

ate only carnation slender bars for years nothing nothing with all the new bars were as good as those with coffee in the am and pm miss them and think of them often deliecious i loved the chocolate and vanilla

Oh, please, General Mills, bring these back! When I was a kid, I would beg my mom for these at our local Safeway. Chocolate, cinnamon, and vanilla. So darn good. Never have tasted another thing like it. Man, oh, man -- memories... I want to remember a strawberry, too, but maybe not. I'm might be thinking of Quik.

Those breakfast squares were great to take to school or work when you were in a hurry. It was true, you ate two of those squares from the packet and that would fill before lunch. I enjoyed them with a cup of coffee or tea. I hope like thousands out there who feels the same way I do that they will make a come back. Excellent product.

There are hundreds of us! Hundreds! I can't believe how many people remember and truly loved these things. My grandma bought these all the time. My favorite were the chocolate. And I completely forgot about the butterscotch until I read the comments. Those were a close second. Moist and tasty...hahaha. Tasty, hell yes. Moist, no. Dry and powdery and delicious as everyone here has described. I can still smell and taste these. Please bring these back!

I have tried hundreds of protein type bars and I always hope they would taste like the Carbation Breakfast squares I had as a kid. I dream about these and I see a lot of other people feel the same 30+ years later! Hello carnation?!?!? Perhaps you can bring these back adding whey protein which would have the same taste.

I really loved Breakfast squares and still hope they will bring them back. I have been looking in Europe hoping that perhaps here they would have them. The timing is so right for them to bring them back. It's a pity that companies never listen to their clientele. Such a pity.

Breakfast Squares were heaven for the palate. I have never developed such an affection for a dessert food brand. Such emotional memories and longing for this item. I would buy out the entire shelf if these were available again!

Someone posted on another board that the cocoa-peanuts butter flavor of Nature Valley Soft-baked Filled Squares tastes very similar to the chocolate breakfast squares. Both made my General Mills! I got some and it's true, the flavor is what I remember from my childhood.

My friend and I talk about these all the time! They were SO freakin good! Why oh why do they quit making the good stuff?? I'm tellin ya if they brought back a lot of these products from the 80's, us old heads would buy them and the companies would make a killin!

I was a kid in the ‘70s as well. I LOVED THE BREAKFAST-SQUARES!! All flavors too: vanilla, chocolate and cinnamon. My parents tried to get on a health kick with protein powder named Tigers Milk and these. My sister and I always snuck them and ate them all up. I still have hope that they bring them back. Carnation Instant Breakfast squares were a staple for me for many years! I had major stomach issues and for whatever reason these squares tasted great and didn’t hurt my stomach! I loved them!! I loved the chocolate a vanilla flavors! I pray that one day they will make a comeback. I miss my safe and delicious breakfast!!!!

I miss the chocolate malt flavored one.. Sigh.. I remember the foil package tearing open, to fresh and soft breakfast treat that I ate every day! I wish I had one now!
