Description
Dough powder, cheese powder, oily bright orange sauce in a can--delicious! Only in the very loosest interpretation is this stuff pizza. Still available, and can't beat the 80s nostalgia price of .50!

I beg to differ. This is my favorite kind of pizza. The sauce makes it. I only hope it never leaves the shelves.

It may not have been the best pizza, but was likable. Maybe, I enjoyed it for bringing everyone together. The entire family would eat it with no complaints. Frozen pizza's seemed less popular, with varying opinions on taste, texture, and toppings!

It was quite good, and you can still buy it cheap ($3.49, enough to make two pizzas). You need to buy some real cheese topping on the side to make them really good though. Still, a lot cheaper than going out to eat.

I've had this myself and unless I'm doing something hideously wrong when I make the "pizza" it doesn't turn out as good as I would hope. The crust is all messy and when it comes out of the oven it hardly resembles a pizza. I'd rather just buy the ready made crust, sauce and cheese because that always works out better.

My mom used to make this every Sunday night - one "cheese" only and the other had sliced hot dogs on it. We ate it while we watched the Wonderful World of Disney. (Yikes - could that have been the 70s?)

They still have these. My mom buys them from the grocery store sometimes. They are absolutely delicious, yum!

I'm not sure if my mom ever made this for us (maybe once). I always wanted to try it - I was a Chef Boyardee kid, for sure. Now I feel like getting the kit and seeing if I remember anything...

I recently made one for the first time. I hate chef sauce and whats with the mini pack of cheese powder? I dumped a bag of mozarella on it and still couldent make it edable.

I remember my mother scouting every store within a 50 mile radius trying to find one of these kits about 10 years ago- for the sauce alone. For months that box sat in our cupboard with the crust mix, and no sauce. Im glad to see that they are alive and well though!

Just made one of these 2 weeks ago. I always add sausage, green peppers, onion, and mozerella cheese to mine. Sometimes, I make cheese burger pizza with it too. The pizza kit ROCKS!!!!

Love this!!! Grew up on it and now fix it all the time. Ok, I am dating myself, but as a kid, use to watch reruns of the Andy Griffith show and the Odd Couple while eating the pizza!!

Love these! My mom couldn't cook, so this is my childhood comfort food. We still have them back home in IL, but I haven't checked here in Southern CA.
Krissi - October 13, 2010 - Report this comment

I have to say I am a Chef boyardee pizza fanatic! I've been eating them ever since I was about 5 years old. My mom would make them on Friday nites, I'm from Cleveland Ohio and there used to be these horror movie show hosts called Hoolihan and Big Chuck and also The Ghoul. We would watch these terrible movies and eat the pizza. I still make them to this day, they are the best!!! You can also buy the sauce in cans, it is the same as what you get in the kits, I always add more sauce. When I got married we recieved 4 double pizza kits as a gift, just goes to show you how much I love these things.
Jay - February 28, 2014 - Report this comment
And they still taste the same! no changes at all its 1984 again every time I make one.
charlie - May 03, 2014 - Report this comment
contd 13x9 glass pan (like the kind you use for lasagna) then she would put the sauce and powder cheese on top and some more reg mozz cheese and hamburger meat and it was so freakin good. that sauce and the powder cheese is why its soooo remarkable. im gonna go make it right now and its 4 in the morning.
Nonie - May 19, 2016 - Report this comment
I've always loved these, but nowadays there isn't enough sauce in them to adequately cover the crust, which makes them awful.
Isac - May 22, 2016 - Report this comment
I am SO over Chef Boyardee Pizza Maker. The sauce doesn't keep very long. It grows mold and smells nasty over time. Plus, the crust is pretty awful.

I ate the sausage pizzas in the 70's and still eat the pepperoni pizzas. Love them! I would almost give my right arm for one of the sausage kits!
Dave - February 15, 2017 - Report this comment
The Sausage kit was the best! Does anyone know exactly when they stopped selling it. It was Dad and my favorite, but now Mom can't remember it and swears they never made a Sausage. I've been searching for some history of it to prove it to her. I remember when I was a kid there were only two kinds, Cheese or Sausage. Then later they came out with the Pepperoni kit and the Sausage was phased out, much to our dismay. It was so much better!
Rob Lambert - May 10, 2017 - Report this comment
The pizza kits have been around since about 1955. A small packet of parsley also came with. Those with sausage had the meat in the sauce can. We had these quite often in the late sixties, because frozen pizza was sparse at stores, and going out for pizza was more expensive. Chef Boy At Dee did sell frozen pizzas from 1962 to 1965, but sales were lackluster.

From the prime time TV vault, an earlier Chef Boiardi Pizza kit spot featuring a post-nuclear family of four. Sausage and plain cheese boxes shown. Slogan at the time was, "Meal In a Minute the Chef's Way." Actually, it took 20 minutes to make one from scratch, including crust prep. Commercial aired on "Untouchables" over ABC (5/14/63). Jiffy Pop, Anacin, Dristan, Goodyear and Dodge were other sponsors. Also, Ad Council PSA for Radio Free Europe.

Made one last night! Still delicious, though I think they've changed the sauce. It could be that I've forgotten what it tasted like (hadn't had one in close to 20 years). My husband had never had Chef Boyardee pizza. He liked it. We'll buy more soon!

Loved the Sausage Pizza Kit. I think I had this every Friday night during the late 70's/80's. Never really liked the Cheese or Pepperoni as good. The Sausage sauce was the best then you add the Pepperonis. Would love to find a knockoff recipe.

From the daytime TV vault, we go back to an earlier "American Bandstand" episode (3/8/63) on ABC from Philadelphia. Dick Clark's announcer, Charlie O'Donnell, pitches Appian Way pizza kits, a Chef Boy Ar Dee competitor. "Make your twist party really swing," he says. Instead of a can, the sauce is in a foil packet. In the 30-minute episode, other commercials for Dentyne gum with Dick Clark. Also, Mini-Poo, a hairspray for women, Clearasil pimple cure and Certs candy. O'Donnell promos "Discovery '63," the kids educational show hosted by Frank Buxton. Nancy Sinatra was featured guest.

"Make your twist party really swing!" LOL!

Thanks, Kat! Found out that Appian Way pizza kits were made by the Armour Meat Company. Saw a 1965 commercial, aired during "The Fugitive" on ABC. Started using cans for sauce. Neither in that or the 1963 commercial mentioned a meat or mushroom variety, only cheese. Appian Way was priced about 20 cents less than Chef Boy Ar Dee.
Rob Lambert - October 06, 2020 - Report this comment
From the prime time TV vault, a commercial that compares the thickness (and zestfulness) of the sauce between Appian Way (Armour Foods) and Chef Boy Ar Dee pizza kits. Armour claimed its sauce to be "more Italian" than the Chef. Still pictures of Roman Coliseum and Leaning Tower of Pisa shown. This aired during "The Fugitive" with David Janssen on ABC (9/15/65). Other sponsors on the show: Viceroy Cigarettes, Allstate Insurance, Contac cold capsules, Philips Milk of Magnesia. Network promos for "The FBI" with Efrem Zimbalist. Also, "Never Too Young," a teen-oriented soap opera. And, "Where the Action Is," the pop music-variety show produced by Dick Clark. Ad Council PSA for College Fund ("Give to College of Your Choice").

From the daytime TV vault, a Chef Boy Ar Dee pizza kit commercial geared toward the college aged and young couples. Cheese, sausage and "new" pepperoni kits are shown. Dick Clark reads the pitch from script, always using the phrase, "Make your party swing." Frat and sorority parties, plus young married couple, shown. This aired during "Where the Action Is" on ABC (11/2/66). Certs, Curl Free hair treatment, Right Guard and Clairol among other sponsors. Networ promo for "Time Tunnel." Paul Revere and Raiders, Keith Allison, Tommy Roe and Tina Mason among performers.

Yes for Chef Boyardee Pizza Kits!! So many memories of Mom in the 70's making these (although grungily at times and a couple of curse words in the process) We think they are delicious and love the sauce, however yes I understand MOM because they can be time consuming and a lot of work! First you make that dough, let it rise, and then you actually make the pizzas, which a lot of times produce holes in the process (hence the curse words) also us kids and the neighbors kids there eyeballing our Mom and driving her crazy! I do remember sometimes Mom used to cut corners and double it up and make one thick pizza ! LOL Love you MOM!

I searched "remember chef boy ar dee frozen pizza" I remember eating them in the 60s in front of the tube when I was a kid and they were good. i remember the taste of the oregano and another flavor I can't pinpoint but it's very italian and I have tasted it in years! sure things taste better when you are a kid...but alot of food was just better back then. even frozen processed food was better than the garbage we're being sold today.
