I remember this gum coming in mint and bubble gum flavor. It was such a treat if I could con the adult with me into buying me this liquid filled gum.

There was also a cinnamon...I was just telling my kids about it and wondering why they discontinued it

When I was in college, the campus store sold every variety Chewels on the market. The odd thing was, this was the late 90s and Chewels hadn't been popular for a while. Always made me wonder how often they rotated their stock.

You guys remember the original pink kind? That was my favorite. I heard the reason they discontinued it was because the filling contained too much aspartame.

During the 80's, it started to become obvious that regular trips to outer space, the end of disease and world peace might not be around the corner. Solution? Yummy, exciting, liquid-y gum! At least Chewels was a good use of technology on street level that wasn't very toxic.

They had cherry 7up flavor too!!! None of my friends believe me because I grew up in Chicago and it was in every corner store. Then I moved to Detroit and never found the gums here in MI. But Mmmmmm.... It was sooo good!!! =)Would love to have some of that gum today!!! =)

I used to chew a piece of bubble gum with a piece of cinnamon. The flavor lasted forever and you could blow cinnamon bubbles!! I want this gum back too!!!

I LOVED this gum. I have been wishing I could find it somewhere....they really need to bring it back - there's nothing out there that even comes close to the flavor! The pink was my all time fave

I went through this gum so fast because once I finished with the liquid center it was on to the next piece!

@Megan I think you are right. I only tried Chewels a couple times back then and I still remember the warning on the package, something like "Eating this product may be hazardous to your health. This product contains saccharin which has been known to cause cancer in laboratory animals." It freaked me out and I stayed away from it after that. I did like the liquid center though, thought that was pretty cool.

Chewels was made by Warner-Lambert (no relation) from 1978 until around 1992. Its direct competitor was Freshen Up gum, also with a liquid center. Found some radio commercials which aired when teenagers were most likely to tune in. Both are from Chicago stations. First, with the jingle, "I've Got Flavor, I've Got Taste, I've Got Chewels!" This aired on WLS in March, 1982. The DJ was Brant Miller in the early evening. Second ad had the jingle, "Smack Dab In the Middle!" This aired on WLUP-AM and FM in October, 1984 with Jonathon Brandmeier late afternoon. Johnny B was a DJ, talk show host and rock musician all in one. After a wild 25 years in rock radio, he was hired by WGN radio as morning host, replacing Spike O'Dell. Unfortunately, Brandmeier and WGN got along like apple and orange, and he was dropped after two years. He's now in Los Angeles.
