Description
Remember when wine coolers were all the rage? These were supposedly Australian wine coolers with bizarre commercials. The characters had bad accents and did wacky things.

These were the best wine coolers around! This was the wine cooler of choice by my friends and I when we were young. Wish they were still around so I could see if I still would like them.
Lori - September 26, 2007 - Report this comment
YES.. these were SOOO good. I remember when I heard they were going to quit making them. I bought up a whole bunch of them at the local drive thru. But they sure didn't last long. I wish Miller would bring them back.
karan - December 12, 2007 - Report this comment
Oh my God, how I loved these Coolers. Why did they stop making them? I have looked for years for these coolers. Is there any way we could convince the Miller company to bring these Coolers back. I really wish they would. Lets start some kind of request for these coolers.
karan - December 12, 2007 - Report this comment
I wrote to the Miller Company, who produced the Matilda Bay Coolers in the 1980's. I would encourage all to write the company, and ask that they bring them back. The address is: The Miller Brewing Company 3939 W. Highland Blvd. Milwaukee, Wisconsin 53208 414-931-2000. They also have a website: TheMillerBrewingCompany.com Please write them, and ask them to re-make this wonderful Cooler. There really is no other Cooler on the market like it.

When I went away to college in 1987 I was slightly underage and I never sipped an ounce of alcohol. However, (grin) someone put a Matilda Bay Cooler in my hand and I was sold. I was disappointed when they stopped making this. I will contact Miller Brewery per Karan and ask them to bring it back on the market. You're right, there hasn't been a cooler like it since.

I was thinking about the good 'ole days last night and Matilda Bay wine coolers popped into my head! Imagine my surprise when I found others like me who would like to see them return to the market!! Come on, Miller...bring 'em back!!!

It's funny--for some reason, I was remembering that cooler (they were fantastic!) and could not remember the name--I remembered that me and a friend of mine used to order them in an attempted Australian accent to try to impress the barmaids (never worked just for the record). I could not remember the name and it drove me nuts so I did a google search for "australian cooler" and came upon this site. Just goes to show--you can find out anything on the net!

I think that miller must have seen that their product ended up in too many minors hands and got them to wasted, because it didn't even taste like alcohol. I think if it was still around, myself and half of america would be alcoholics. Matilda bay was so smooth and great tasting they had to pull it. I would still drink it if it was still around, and I don't drink anymore.Miller should bring it back.

I've searched in vain on the interwebs for a "Picture" of a Matilda Bay Wine Cooler Bottle. The best I could find is some cheesy bar mirror. Anybody have a picture of the bottle, itself, and/or the 4-pack carrier? I vaguely remember it having a purple/yellow label. Great stuff by the way -- it saw its demise in Texas when all "wine coolers" had to become "malt beverages".

I believe the reason I liked it over the other ones is-it didn't have that much of a carbonated feel when drinking it. It was incredibly smooth as well as delicious. It would be my drink of choice today, if it was to come back. I'll email Miller as well.
Anacad - June 18, 2009 - Report this comment
I have a four pack of Matilda Bay wine coolers under the bar down in the basement. I bought them back in February of 1990 when I found out Miller was stopping production of my favorite beverage. I promised myself I would not open one up for twenty years. Only eight more months to go go!
Brian B - June 19, 2009 - Report this comment
Me again. I emailed Miller (now MillerCoors) and received a typical response saying Matilda Bay is not their product and they would not have info on it. I responded back to their Consumer Affairs Department with a clip from 1988-89 from the vice president of marketing Ref: Case#N20464145. I think we should all start a Matilda Bay club-if we make enough noise, someone will find the recipe and make it again.

Matilda Bay Wine Coolers were the best. These days people confuse wine coolers were malted beer coolers. Here in Tennessee only liquor stores sell wine. The coolers sold in grocery stores, are malted beverages. I purchased my Matilda Bay from the liquor store.

The reason I remember Matilda Bay Wine Coolers so well is not only the taste, but when Miller Brewing was on the island of Kauai to make a commercial for the Cooler, they contacted me to rent my '57 Chevy convertible for the commercial; the only thing was they wanted to paint it bright pink. I only agreed when they also gave the money to have it repainted. They also rented a sea plane for the ad and painted it pink as well and used it on the Wailua River. My car was used at the Coco Palms with many locals in Hawaiian dress and leis in the photos. I never saw the ad and was wondering if anyone else ever saw it. I wish I could get a copy of the tape. Any response will be appreciated.

Yes, Yes, My cousins and I kept those boxes of Matilda Bay in our fidge, and a couple in the cabinet, I had my brother bring to me, He was a three hour drive from my apartment. I even introduced my little sister to these. We were just talking about Matilda Bay tonight thinking we could drink one box for old times sake. I didn't know that Miller had completely taken them off the market truly the best cooler ever made. COME ON MILLER BRING EM' BACK!!!!!!

I remember when a friend of mine cleaned out her fridge and found a six pack in the back - it must was 1992 or so. Yeah, she was that much of a slob. Anyway, I drove 350 miles to split it with her. It had been at least four years since we'd tasted that sweet nectar of the gods. Arbor Mist's Tropical Fruit Chardonnay is a reasonable facsimile for the 40 year old taste palate. But oy! I miss the real thing.

I found a Matilda Bay mirror a few years ago to put up in my Man Cave. I would pay double if they would bring it back. It was by far the best wine cooler ever. I loved the Matilda Bay Dry. We used to by them when they were sold in a wine box. We would rip the box apart, squeeze the silver bag, and open the valve to let that nector of the gods rush down our throats! Bring it back Miller!!! Has anyone seriously started a petition? I think it would work if we could get enough people. ...maybe something on facebook????

These were the best wine coolers EVER! I just about died when they stopped making them. I would drink a bag in the box of this every weekend. In fact when they quit selling them I was pissed! My brother called me one day after I found out that they were not selling them anymore. He had stopped at a country store in the boone docks and they had some for sale $1.00 a four pack. I thought he was pulling my leg. My mom and I bought $20.00 worth a piece. They were great. I wish they would bring them back!!

I loved these wine coolers. I do still have a bottle, but I could not wait until the Apocalypse!! I personally know a couple of the Coors brothers, but they have very little to do with the brewery anymore. Bring this recipe back !! I helped install the new Miller line in Golden(Mickeys) and maybe should have switched part of the line to Matilda Bay!!! LOL anyway, there may be hope somebody can come up with the recipe and once again come up with this classic cooler !!!

I opened a Seagrams Jamaican me Happy cooler today. I have never had one.... It reminded me of something from my past that was soooooooo good! I had to look it up. I remembered it being non carbonated, but it had the exact same flavor of what I am drinking now. If anyone wants to experience that great refreshing taste again but carbonated... Try JAMAICAN ME HAPPY by Seagrams! It brought me back to the 80s today and put a smile on my face!!!!! Enjoy!

Drowned in a sea of Matilda Bay wine coolers during my high school days! That stuff was delicious! Other guys were sitting around with cheep beer, and I had a bunch of MB - guess who the girls latched on to? When you showed up at a party with a box of Matilda Bay Wine Cooler under your arm, you were always welcomed in. The feds shut down the production of wine coolers by taxing wine so it was no longer cost effective to produce.

Talking on phone w/college roommate. Comparing tuition then to that today. That led to discussion of Matilda Bay and found this site. We went to a dry college, used to empty bag into gallon jug as it looked like lemonade. Decorated dorm room Christmas tree with Matilda Bay caps one year. Oh the memories. We whole heartedly agree that Miller needs to bring Matilda Bay back!!
Elena - January 01, 2012 - Report this comment
My husband came up with a GREAT idea. Miller claims MB is not their product and they do not have the recipe. One of you all who has a Matilda Bay needs to take it to some type of food lab to get it analyzed. Find out the recipe and go from there. I see a future multi-millionaire!!!! We can all have a Matilda Bay Summer.
Wendy - January 02, 2012 - Report this comment
OMG!! These were the best. If someone could bring them back it would be a huge windfall for them. If Miller doesn't want to claim them, then I guess they are free game. I loved them and would buy them from you...whoever can make it happen.

Absolutely loved Matilda Bay!!! Mostly because it wasn't carbonated...if they can make something that tastes like Jerimyah (sp) Weed and coke then surely we can get 40 ouncers of MB. Miller closed their brewery in central New York shortly after they discontinued Matilda. The Budweiser brewery is still here, but now owned by a European company. I went all over the state looking for Matilda and even into Massachusetts a few times. The legendary box was a sunset yellow and orange with purple lettering and I would commit several misdemeanors to get even a small amount right now. Matilda was one of the few good memories from the eighties for me.

I loved Matilda Bay, I remember taking a box with me on a weekend camping trip, good times! I saw someone mention this, and they were right. If you're looking for something that tastes like a Matilda Bay, go try the Seagram's Jamaican Me Happy. Only $2.99 at my local Total Wines for 4 bottles. It's the closest thing to a MB that I've tasted. The booze content is a little low, I think it was 3.5%, but a shot of vodka perked that up.

Matilda Bay and fried egg sandwiches.... that is what we lived on... just called the Miller Brewing Company and told them to bring it back... of course the girl I spoke to had absolutely no clue what I was talking about but she pulled up discontinued products and found it. She said, "Oh... we discontinued that in 1989." I told her that I knew that and have been in a deep depression ever since and could she please request that they be brought back.

Ah yes Matilda Bay. I was working for HEB during the late 80's and use to sneak the Matilda Bay box into the dairy cooler and let it get nice and cold. Then I would go in and drink it one cup at a time. It was awsome. Good times.

On this thread in 2009, someone posted Sunset Splash tasted like Matilda Bay. I ordered 2 bottles and they arrived yesterday. Sunset Splash tasted nothing like Matilda Bay and has to be the most disgusting wine that has ever been produced!!!!!! I should have known it was going to be horrible because the bottle has a screw on cap. No cork. Do not purchase if you were a Matlilda Bay drinker.

I used to have these sitting on my drum riser at every gig. I kept on drinking them even after I'd get heartburn from the citric acid. I hope they bring them back, but I won't hold my breath.

I remember them as not being carbonated. We would drink them and not get bloated. Tasted a little sweet though. My wife would like them as she likes the hard lemonade. I would drink one too for auld lang sine.

I too have spent many a moon looking for a replacement for the drunken deliciousness that disappeared. I agree with the couple of posts about Jamaican Me Happy. Although it is carbonated the taste is remarkably similar. 2 tricks I've come up with: 1)stick a straw in the bottle and stir a little. To decrease carbonation. 2) add about a 1/4 of a shooter of PEACH 99 Proof schnapps. Give a stir again and enjoy. Sharing a little love from T'z Tiki Lounge

Matilda Bay Wine Coolers were the best. I've never been much of a drinker but there is nothing that compares tonthe taste of these. Didn't taste too much like wine like most do today. Very smooth taste. Man I can just taste them now.

I have a vivid memory of drinking some Matilda Bay sitting in a hot tub on a family vacation in Treasure Island, FLA in 1988. Wicked good drink! I WAS underage at the time though (for Florida) but was legal drinking age (for Canada - where I'm from.) I didn't feel guilty...;-) Would love to be able to buy some again!!

Please Miller... Bring the Matilda Bay Coolers back! There are SO many of us late baby boomers that would drink ourselves silly on these for the rest of eternity! Our friends and us would throw parties and this would be the ONLY drink available! We covered an 8x10 foot wall of a room floor to ceiling, with the bottles, from 1 weekend! There is STILL no beverage that compares!

I've been trying to remember what these were called, and it's been driving me crazy for years! Today I found a Matilda Bay mirror at an antique store and finally knew the answer! Does anyone else remember if you could get it in a 2-liter plastic bottle? None of my friends remember that, so I'm not sure if I'm confusing it with something else.

My point of view on Matilda Bay Wine Cooler's are one of a kind! If anything, I'm glad to ever have the best cooler in that era of time. The Miller Brewing Company has a gem recipe on their hands.

Absolutely partied with Matilda Bay many nights. They were definitely the best. With that said, all wine coolers fizzled out when the government increased the tax on wine from 17cents per gallon to $1.07 per gallon. That ushered in the end to wine coolers.
