Description
Royal Crown Cola (originated before the 80's, but it became big in New England around 1980-81.) It only sold in my area in discount department stores like Ames and Zayre's. Basically, they stepped up their advertising around the time of the "Cola Wars".

My all-time favorite cola. RC was the first of the colas to have 16oz bottles - though it cost 12¢ - while Pepsi & Coke cost 10¢ for a 12oz bottle. I shelled out the extra 2¢ per bottle in order to get more of the great taste of RC. It seemed to die down for awhile but now it seems it's back but not nearly as popular - perhaps because the other 2 biggies have more advertising $'s to spend. Still the same great taste! Royal Crown is the maker of Nehi flavors - which has virtually disappeared from my area. Loved that Nehi Orange & Grape but hopefully they'll return someday. "It's been almost 100 years since Claude Hatcher, a young graduate pharmacist in Columbus, Georgia, began creating soft drinks in the basement of his family's wholesale grocery business in 1905. Little did he know at the time that his humble experiments would grow into a great soft drink company..." (from company website)

Hey! If we grew up in the same area and time, how about some more regional favs? "Polar" soda! Or did that stuff start way before the 1980's?

I remember as a kid my friends and I would walk down to the neighborhood corner store and get a hot dog, a bag of Lays and an ice cold RC cola to wash it down. yum. And RC cola is still readily available where in live (in BC Canada). I make my kids drink it even though they think its a coke knock off.

They still have it all over the place here in the states. It's a "cheap brand" soda. It's alright I guess. I would drink it if offered, but I usually by coke or pepsi.
lakatt - March 01, 2009 - Report this comment
We buy it in 2009! My boys say it is soda, not a Pepsi nor a Coke, but a soda. We will continue to buy it as long as they make it.
KY cola - March 26, 2009 - Report this comment
RC is no cheap brand, Sam's Choice and Big K are cheap brands. RC is just awesome. Coke is too weak, Pepsi is too sweet. Nothing matches RC. If you're in a place where it's not available (God forbid), at the fountain do about 1/2 Dr. Pepper and 1/2 whatever cola is available. It's not the same, but it's in the vicinity. Plus it can only improve the other colas' taste.

My parents used to buy it all the time and it wasn't too bad, but since I have left the nest I drink Coke if I choose to drink a dark soda.

Love RC Cola. Have since a kid. I used to have the RC Cola poster up on my wall growing up. Can anyone help me I'm trying to find an image of the poster. It was of a pizza delivery girl on roller skates carrying a pizza and RC cola and I remember the girl was Erin Moran's sister but can't remember her name...

I remember the eight-pack bottled RC in a carton. The bottle caps often had prizes under the rubber seal. You had to peel back that gray piece to see if you won a quarter or whatever. When you took the empty bottles back to the store, you'd get money back ($.10 a bottle?) or you'd have to pay less for your next eight pack.

RC Has ALWAYS dominated the cola industry, atleast in my eyes. Pepsi tastes flat, Coke burns going down, and not only that if coke eliminates rust on metal..imagine what it does to your insides.. but RC is just right, the best tasting cola..hands down!!!

I was born & raised in Chicago...I would always bring up RC, but most didn't seem too familiar. Nice to see this posting!! I didn't know they didn't make it anymore, but come to think of it, I don't think I've seen a can since the 90s. I live in NYC now though...is that why??

I live in Ontario, Canada and have been unable to find RC Cola anywhere. I have E-mailed RC and they gave me a list of grocery stores that are supposed to still carry it. They are really out of touch! None of the suggested stores have it! Can anybody out there help me????

Growing up, I can't say that we bought this before we bought Coke or Pepsi but RC is way better then those other two! Even my 10 y/o picks it out at the store, over the other 2 brands...I've taught him well. :)

The famous commercial with the cute girl on the skateboard was Kelly Moran. That commercial won Rc (cott) a clio award. Best Rc Cola to date.

One year on my B-Day i won ten dollars, five dollars and two ten cent caps in one eight pack of RC, my brother won ten cents also and he said here you may as well have this one too. My question is what were the prize amounts? I remember 10dollars, five dollars and ten cent's, want to see if anyone know's for sure if that was the only prize amounts. Thanks

when I was a poor student, I drank RC only because I could buy 4 cans for the price of one 500ml bottle of pepsi. It tasted fine--especially when it was really cold.

RC is still my cola of choice. I also like RC Cherry when I can find it.

RC cola was forced out of the stores by the Coke Pepsi wars. They bought the isle space in the stores to keep them out. Even today coke isles in walmart are stocked by coke workers not walmart workers. Colt now owns RC and Dr Pepper and re-brands both as a store brand product for walmart and dollar stores. Its calles sams cola and dr thunder. But its the same product

I think I am the only person who thought this soda was foul. Our local pizza shop had RC in the fountain soda machine and I would get orange instead. GROSS!!!

Hardly any restaurant offers RC from a fountain these days. RC goes back nearly 90 years. The bottle label pictured a desert scene with pyramids until around 1959. Then came the red diamond logo for ten years. The psychedelic RC logo began in 1971, with variants over the years. RC has always been the third-stringer of colas. Not the best, but OK in a pinch.
