Just a point of interest. I have noticed that there are 2 different body styles of Firefox. One has a T-top and one does not. Also seems that the one with the T-top has one gas can on the back and the regular top has two gas cans. Anyone know if this indicates different years of manufacture? I now have aquired 4 of theese. 2 silver full top. And 2 red, one full top and one T-top. Hope to post pics soon.

Did you noticed that the regular Fire Fox version might be a prototype of the modern Humvee? I've always wanted a Red Fire Fox that I saw in the TV commercials back in the early 1980s. But I never got one. I recalled that they sold for over$50. They were quite expensive. Looking back at that moment in time, I wish that I could grab a few to store away because they are so hard to find. I've been searching for one since 2004. Does anyone have the old Fire Fox commercials, as well as the commercials of the Tyco race car sets from the 1970s to the early 1980s?

I have 2 silver firefoxs...both with the front axel connector broken...does anyone know who/where to get spare parts? any tricks to "fix" its the plastic piece that the metal axel slips into. i guess you could call it a steering arm. Please help.

Hi Rick, Shinsei is still in business. However, they are now based in India. They business focus is primary educational pre-school toys. I'll try to provide a link to their website. From what I can tell you, their best days are well behind them. In fact, this is not the same company that was famous for its diecast toys and R/C toys, which are not very difficult to find. Good luck finding the Fire Fox or any other R/C toy that Shinsei has produced.

I remember this toy, my brother stole mine and sold it for some weed. I was heartbroken. This was 1978.

My son just turned 6, so naturally, I started looking for a r/c car. I say naturally because when I was 6 (1977) I got a grey hardtop firefox for Christmas and it was my favorite toy for many many years after that. I literally ran it into the ground. I remember rebuilding it multiple times and was always able to get it back into working order. Eventually it landed in the trash after nearly ten years of trips down the steps and head-on collisions with everything from my best friends firefox (red, t-top, second editon)to my sisters bicycle to a big-wheel from up the road. I played with that thing well into my teens and recall that it outlasted almost every other r/c car that any of my friends growing up had. I cant believe how durable it was. Yes -- gotta love Google. I just watched A Christmas Story and seeing the authentic carbon action 200 shot Red Ryder air rifle made me think of my best Christmas. I got the Silver Firefox among other things. I remember playing with it for only about 1/2 an hour before the batteries needed to be replaced. I found out later it was b/c my dad had played with all the night before... Good memories. Thinking of buying one for my son.

Just picked up this silver example here in the UK.. http://www.xcvm.com/shinsei_firefox.jpg I may replace the electrolytic capacitors at some point as these degrade over time and will eventually wear out, fortunately the manufacturer fitted good quality Rubycon capacitors which are still doing their job.

My name is Jeff, I was fortunate enough to grow up in the 80's . What a great time to be a kid. I always loved RC just couldn't afford it. My Dad worked construction , we were middle class and struggled at times. I saw this Silver Firefox in the case at Kirkwood hobby shop here in Missouri when I was 12. Back then it was $89 it might as well have been $80,000, I wanted this for Christmas more than anything.Somehow on Christmas day 1981 it appeared under the tree. My mom and dad are now gone I never knew or appreciated how hard it was for them to do this until I was a dad. I have my original FireFox they bought me and have bought several more. I am 46 years old, this simple toy reminds me of the love and sacrifices my parents made I will cherish it forever......
