Description
The Johnson & Johnson name is all about soaps, powders and lotions today, but in the 80s they also put out THE coolest baby toys ever! A see-through rattle with moving parts inside; a dumbbell-shaped toy filled with water and a little red ball that moved thru the water from the squeaky end to the jingle bell end; a freaky vinyl fold-out book with all sorts of strange cartoon and photographic images printed on it. My sister and I used to go to our next-door-neighbor's house in the summer and play with all their J & J toys under the guise of "visiting" their new baby.

My son was born in late 1984. I think I purchased all of the J&J Child Development toys. They were expensive and it was a sacrafice, but I still have those toys todays. I would like to pass them along to any future grandchildren.

These were the best toys ever! I so wish they were still made. My favorite (and the favorite of my three children, born 78, 79, and 81) was a see through plastic bowl (sort of like a goldfish bowl) with three smaller plastic balls that went in it. The smaller balls had colored inserts that spun when you moved them. This was absolutely our kid's favorite. They could play with these for hours. Too big to fit in their mouths, but small enough to fit comfortably in their hands. I'm a grandmother now, and went to purchase them. Imagine my dismay when I learned they were no longer made. It was funny to see the look on the face of the salesclerk as I tried to explain what I was looking for. Please bring these back!

My daughter just had our first granddaughter. Yesterday she asked me what toys she played with when she was a baby. I thought and remembered. I told her the best were the Johnson & Johnson toys. I'm so sad that we didn't keep them. We passed them on to friends when our kids had outgrown them. I wasn't thinking grandchildren at the time! How I wish I had. I guess I have to go on e-bay to try to find our favorites. There was one my husband called the "solar system toy" I'd probably pay an outlandish price for it, or for the rattle or the truck, or I could go on and on. Why did they stop making them?

I LOVED these toys - was in the club and would receive them in the mail. I think we had all of them. I have twin grandaughters now and really wish I had kept them. They were so cool! I wonder why they don't make them anymore.....

These toys are fantastic!! My daughters were born in the 80's and loved each and everyone. I was always so excited when they arrived. I still have them all today and have a new grandbaby boy who will continue to enjoy them!

Does anyone know anyone who has the Johnson & Johnson clear rattle in good condition that they are willing to sell? I have three sisters and my dad bought all of us one of these rattles when we were born. My little sister is having her first child. I thought it would be a cool gift to give her.

Look on Ebay, Kimberly - they are occasionally posted for bids there. Use search terms 'Playpath' and/or 'Clear Rattle' ... beware, however, as they come at a high cost in 2009! Good luck!

I am so sentimental, I practically cried reading all the positive comments surrounding these toys! I cant think of any other toys that were so highly regarded. Of course we gave all of them away to worthy youger advisaries as more baby cousins came along. Never thinking I would not be able to buy them for grandkids. Does anyone know where to get these toys today? I'm thinking about contacting J&J directly..

I Don't know if anyone can help me....my son was born 7 months ago with Down syndrome and his therapist brought forth a bag of Johnson and Johnson toys from the 80s that my son is able to hold in his hands and that promote his fine motor development...but I can't find them anywhere. Does anyone have any idea? My son was able to hold the rattle so easily. I hate that toys today are so gimicky and not practical like they were then. Thank you for your help!

My daughter was born in 1982. My husband and I received an offer to have Johnson and Johnson toys sent directly to the house. Knowing the reputation of the company we joined. Approximately every 6 weeks a package arrived woth 2 new toys, age appropriate of course, along with suggestions for their use at different ages. These toys GREW with her, and later our son. We are hoping to find somewhere to get some for the next generation.

He'll move every other toy out of the way to get to this rattle. It's amazing! Even similar rattles don't do the trick. I'm not sure what it is, but it's good stuff! I bought all the Johnson & Johnson infant toys for my daughter when she was born in 1984. My other children played with them also. I refused to give them away and put them in the attic in a rubbermaid tub. I went into the attic this past weekend and found that tub of toys, brought them down and my Grand-daughter is in love with them. Her favorite is the Red Rings (great for a teething ring). I'm so glad I kept them all.

I, too, loved these toys. They were the best. I also belonged to the club and loved getting them. My kid's favorite was the pictures on the vinyl pictured above. I could make the two pieces into a box and play peek a boo with them. They loved it! The rattle with the beads was also a favorite, however, it was so big, the babies almost always smacked themselves in the head with it. I wish these were still made!!!

We just gave four of these to our first biological granddaughter; Rhythm Rollers (0 to 36 mos), Balls in a Bowl (6 to 30 mos), Stack & Dump Truck (12 to 48 mos), and Peek-a-Boo Ball (birth to 18 mos), all with the original boxes and books. I was just checking eBay and the Internet in general to see if we should hang on to the boxes and books (the toys are staying!).

My daughter' favorite toy was Backpack Bear. He had a book about potty training in his backpack. She lost it in a Target when she was and we had to buy another since she couldn't sleep. I repaired that bear a few times. When she was in college I found one on ebay and bought it for her. She is 24 now and it is her favorite.

My kids (1988 & 1992) LOVED these toys! I liked the later ones we received as my oldest got older: the peg village, the green house, the truck, the farm puzzle, the soft books with the little bear, and the building set (we called the "H" blocks). My husband threw many of these out a number of years ago in a "too many little pieces of toys" purge without checking with me first. I was just sick about it. I used to see the toys sold under the "Parents' Magazine" toy series at Target, but it sounds like they discontinued them So sad - they were great toys!

I came to this site hoping to find a list with detailed descriptions of these wonderful educational toys and was shocked to see they're no longer made. My son was born in Dec. of '84 and we adopted him the following month. As an elementary school teacher I could see the value of these toys and joined the "club", even though it was quite a sacrifice to pay what, for us, was a high price. But our dear baby was worth it! I believe I purchased the entire collection, but don't see pics of them all here. I still have all of them and my son's daughter, our only grandchild, is now enjoying the same toys her daddy played with. I also have the booklets that came with each toy. They were wonderful manipulatives and great for eye/hand coordination. It's sad that J&J no longer produces them!

OMG, I've been searching high and low for these toys for my new grand-nephew and I am so sad to hear they're no longer made. They were my two son's favorite toys as well, especially the infant toys such as Red Rings and Wiggle Worm. Of course they were long ago given away with all the baby things and now I'm so sorry I didn't save them. I just wrote to J&J asking if they might bring them back on the market. Let's hope so! In the meantime, I'll be scouting ebay and online. They were just the BEST toys.

I am trying to find a tracking tube for infants. I had them for my daughters (born in 1979 & 1983). It had yellow balls on each end with clear liquid in a tube running between. There was a red ball in teh tube the swam back and forth for the child to foolow and enhance visual development.

I bought these for my daughter. It was a true sacrifice because it was during the recession (1982) my only income was unemployment and temporary work, but they just were so special and so well designed, I scraped together the money and bought them. I gave away or sold many of them, but still have some of them (Peg People Village, Sleepy Bunny, Baby Bear, and Backpack Bear, some cars that the peg people fit into, and a boat with a blue clad captain and a yellow slicker clad sailor). My daughter loved them. I only wish I had kept them all. I wonder if Johnson and Johnson would make them again.

I sure hope that Johnson & Johnson is listening. I just did a search to find out if i could re-join the club for our grandson. My son had all of these toys when he was a baby. My favorite memory is of the vinyl book that had a mirror in it and i could hang it in his crib so he could look at his reflection. There were so many wonderful toys they sent every month. I think i sold them all in my first garage sale when he was older.
Joanne C - December 26, 2011 - Report this comment
I also had them sent to the house from J&J. They were based on research with children of each age level.Every one of them was a hit. My children were born in '87 and '90 and every time someone has a new baby I try to find them but can't. They loved the simple red rings with the blue ball and spend so much time with it. We used the book with the mirror and named each face for someone in the family. It helped them learn to talk. The suction cup rattle kept each happy in the high chair as dinner was being made. I forgot about the others until I read the comments. I would buy these for every new baby I know if they where still available. Expensive but some much better than the junk out there.

I also bought these toys for my kids through the mail. We really looked forward to see what was coming next. Now i have a 5 month old grandson and wanted to get them for him. I had seen them sold at CVS drugstores a few years ago, but didn't think to start buying them again for the future. I guess i just thought that they would always be around because they were such awesome toys. Now i guess i will have to dig through the storage room and see if we still have them. J & J should take note to all these comments. They have a large base of consumers here who loved their products and are willing to spend good, hard earned money to continue the tradition.

I would love to find out how to order these toys or buy all of them from somebody1 My email is educatorsusan@aol.com My two boys grew up on these toys in 1979 through 1980 and beyond. Now I have two grandchildren!

Look on ebay, Susan - the toys are on there all the time! Look under search terms 'Johnson & Johnson baby toy' and 'Playpath'. Most of the times the stuff that's posted is waaaaaay overpriced (people are realizing how coveted these toys are) but sometimes you can get lucky. While I was waiting for my baby to arrive, I managed to get the Red Rings, Clear Rattle, Rolling Circus, Click-Clack, Tracking Tube and two additional rattles, all in separate auctions, all for reasonable prices (and a little luck due to no competing bids!). I'm glad I made the effort - my now 10-month-old son LOVES these toys!!

I loved these toys for my boys in the 80's. I'm looking for them now for my grandchildren. I'm especially looking for the Red Rings, the 2 piece vinyl book that had a mirror on one side, and the boat with a sea captain (attached to boat I believe) with a sailor in a yellow slicker (detached). I'd also love the BackPack Bear. We had many of the PlayPath toys but I believe they were "permanently borrowed". Thank you! anneinthesouth@gmail.com

I have several of the Johnson and Johnson baby toys that I am looking to get rid of. They all come with the original books and are very good condition. I loved these toys as a kid, but since there are no children in my future, I need to part with them. If anyone is interested please email me at shadowtiger82@yahoo.com

I purchased those toys for my daughter and couldn't wait to see what would arrive every month. Now she is expecting and I would love to buy these for my grandchild. Why would a company stop making such a successful product? Does anyone know where to purchase something similar or if they are still making them?

I am trying to find the blue star rattle that has the red and yellow spinner in the middle of it. I work with a young man with severe developmental disabilities. This is the ONLY toy/item that he has ever had any interest in (he is 21 years old now) and I would like to find more. He has had three of them throughout his life, and they have all broken now. He is now recovering from his 29th surgery. This is the only thing that comforts him, or upsets him if he doesn't have it. He holds the star in his mouth (oral motor deficiencies) and spins the inside part................for HOURS! We've tried many other "similar" toys/items..............but this is all he wants. Please email me at eylfamily@msn.com if you have any that you would be willing to part with for a reasonable price. I can't pay the $30+ vintage prices on ebay...........but I would sure like to help him. Seems like such a small thing.............but would make a HUGE difference! Thanks!

As a first time mom, I bought these toys and my daughter loved them. I saved the ones that weren't destroyed and now my grandson enjoys them. At the time they did cost more than other toys, but they proved to be timeless and durable--definately worth every dollar!!

I have the yellow dumbbell with the water and the red bead. I found it at the flea market. My grandma has my original one and a few of the other J&J toys. I really should get them from her house. They bring back good childhood memories. Now I use my dumbbell as a prop for my Cabbage Patch Kid collection. I would be interested if anyone is selling any of these toys. I love looking at them even today.

I bought the toys and one of my favorite was the bath book "Happy Kitty" with the removable flat plastic Kitty. My husband lost the Kitty on a plane while watching our daughter, and buying a new one was his very first ebay purchase. Boy was he relieved. Our children LOVED the book!

Wow! My mom and I bought some through garage sales for my first son in 1987. They have been used for many more children since then, including my 2nd son's children. I have since bought a 2nd stand up man because when I babysit there seems to be a fight on who gets to use it. I have parents looking for one to use at home. Love the toys!

Our children were born in 1980 and 1983. We belonged to the J & J Playpath toy club. We kept all the toys and their booklets during our club membership (12 of them). Our daughter (now 31) had her first baby 10 months ago. She specifically requested I retrieve these Playpath toys from the tubs so HER daughter can play with them. I washed up a couple so far and our granddaughter is happily playing with the Box & Blocks and Fitting Forms right now. Sorry, I don't want to sell them; we are expecting more grandchildren. I'm happy J & J made these and that of the few toys we kept when our children outgrew them, the Playpath ones won retention.

In 1996, we subscribed to the "Parent's Magazine" Child development Toy program and got all the asme toys in the mail. Loved getting those monthly boxes! Those toys were the most popular toys in the house!

Iam to be a grandmother soon, and I want so much to give her this gift again for my future grandson, how could I get a program like it, it was so good.

I had forgotten until I read above, how we loved to get the J&J toys in the mail. The toys made it through three children. The one that lasted longest was a suction toy that was intended to be fun (of course!) and teach cause and effect. It had a green base and a handle on a string. The suction attached to a table or a tray top and the man, in three pieces, collapsed, until you pulled the string and make him stand up. I don't remember what J&J named it, but we called him "Stand-up Man". Boy would I love to find one or two for my twin grandsons!

I was also sent these toys when my girls were babies and I recently pulled them out for my first grandson and he LOVES them! Especially the red ring toy that was my now 19 year olds favorite. I saved several of these monthly sent toys and look forward to my grand children now enjoying them too. It's a shame that they no longer make these items.

I had a 3 balls in a bowl set, that I purchased for my daughters in the early 80's. It was a favorite toy! The bowl was a fishbowl shaped clear orange acrylic, there were 3 different colored balls with spinners inside. One of my kids played with it while eating birthday cake, and the bowl forever after smelled like chocolate frosting, no matter how many times it was washed! I would love to buy this toy for my granddaughters now, but I can't even find it on e-bay or anywhere else! I wish they would make this simple toy again!

it is so lovely to read about these toys again. All of my four children were brought up on these toys. I loved receiving the packages and reading the booklets...all the toys were so well designed and engaging - I loved the rattle with the clear bulb and read and white stripy middle with a what ring on the other end...there were blue beads in the rattle that you could spin in all directions...so much fun... and the rattle could be tied to the high chair so that it could be thrown over the edge and fished backup..endless fun!!...I am recently a grandmother and my daughter and I were remembering some of the toys..I could have used the vinyl trifold with the mirror panel today!!! amazing this blog stretches so far back in time...I wonder if J&J know the impact that their developmental program had...and that it continues on today... wished I had kept the toys for my grandchildren.......might scan ebay!

I kept all of the toys I bought back in 1992. I didn't realize that they were made already way back in 1978. I can't understand why they would stop making them. My children didn't play with anything else like they did these early development toys. I was always excited to see my new shipment. They were expensive and yet I kept letting them come every month. My niece is now using them with her children. I was wondering if anyone would like to sell theirs???? Im not having a lot or luck finding them on eBay. Hopefully J &J will start making them again.

Does anyone know if the RED Rings have the chemical BPA? I would have to guess that they do - given their texture, flexibility and the era in which they were made. They are a wonderful design but I hesitate passing them on to the next generation without knowing for sure.

I saved all the Johnson and Johnson toys that I had purchased for my daughter when she was born in 1981. They were great toys. My daughter just had a son of her own and I got all the toys out of a box, they were like new. The blue and red rings, the clear rattle, the blue rattle with the yellow twirly man inside. The plastic book with images on them that you could put together in different ways. My grandson LOVED them. So glad that I saved them! J & J should make them again!

Wiggle Worm was my daughter's fav. I was in their subscription club and would get a new toy delivered. All their toys were specific for baby development, but kids don't know! it's just good, fun play. My daughter was born in 1986 and now pregnant with her first baby. If I want Wiggle Worm now for my grandson, I'll have to pay $30+ on ebay! NVM!

I came to this site looking for the booklets that go with the toys. I belonged to the "club" and purchased many of these toys when my twins were born in 1986. I had my grandsons the last few days and a few of these toys are still in the toybox and of course, the pieces are all mixed up. I thought I still had the books to go with the toys that would help me but can't find them. Loved the toys and would love to find the books to help put the parts back together. Can anyone help?

Thank you J&J. My son was born in 1981 and is an engineer. J & J was the first toy company to introduce monthly STEM toys! As a retired educator and a Mom, I think J&J had a lot of influence on my son’s choice of profession and many children born during the J&J monthly toys!

My daughter was born in 1988,a son in 1991 and my youngest son in 1993. All three of my children enjoyed the collection of Johnson-Johnson toys. I just brought them down from my attic and Thoroughly washed and sterilized them for my four month old granddaughter. I’m sure she will enjoy them as much as her 31-year-old mother died and her two uncles. I’m so glad I held onto them.

I bought these toys for my daughter in the 1980's. She had such a great time with them that I saved them for her children. While going through a tote full of these toys, I pulled out the fish bowl one with the 3 balls and there was such a strong plastic odor that I now question letting any child play with these toys. I found this study on the hazards of vintage toys. https://www.neha.org/node/1310 The complete article: https://www.neha.org/sites/default/files/publications/jeh/JEH-JanFeb2015-Vintage-Toys.pdf

Hello, I am in search of the Johnson and Johnson Red Ring Teether Toy with a ball in the middle of the larger ring. I have a disabled sister who loves these but chews them up. It's her favorite toy. We have resorted to filing them down when the teether marks begin to show to smooth the rings out. Live in Virginia and would like to purchase any if you are willing to part with some. I know how great they are and that many of you are saving them for your grandkids. I just wanted to put the word out if you're interested. Jnusserg3@yahoo.com Please delete if not permitted, Thanks!
