Description
She was a doll after Cricket and Teddy Ruxpin. She had reddish hair down to her shoulders and bangs. Her finger had this weird sensor thing, and when she touched pictures in these books that came with her she could identify them. She also could speak phrases.

My sister had this doll too. When you squeezed her stomach, she would also laugh, like you tickled her. We actually still have it laying around in a box.

We purchased this doll the year she came out for our daughter Juli who was 4 at that time, she enjoyed her very much, unfortunately we do not have the instructions or box, I do have her original outfit, light pink sweater and darker pink cordoroy pants, book and stickers but never purchased additional cards, I know she has some secret words that make her talk more, but I do not remember them all, if anyone has additional info on this doll that could help me, please leave a comment, I can get her to sing Rock a bye baby, Twinkle Twinkle little star, she does recognize dark and light, my 8 year old niece enjoys playing with her when I visit. My daughter has passed away at a early age of 15, so this doll is very special to me. I will keep it and cherish it always.

I had this doll when I was a kid. I wanted it really bad so I got it for Xmas. I loved it, it was my favorite toy, but at the same time I felt bad because my parents had to pay such a high price for it. It was about $112 SMH @ the price

I have the Brazilian version of this doll! She looks exactly the same, but her name is Nadia and she speaks Portuguese instead (obviously). Her original outfit was the same, except she didn't come with the hat and the scarf. She was my all time dream doll, but since it was stupid expensive, i didn't get her at the time. I finally bought her recently out of a Brazilian auction website. It wasn't until today i found out about her American twin sister, Julie XD This is so cool!

I bought this doll for my daughter in 84 or so, and it was the same price as Cricket (who wasn't programmed to do anything but play a tape), around $50 or so. We still have the doll and her books. This doll was so ahead of it's time, I think it was only on the market a short time. They still haven't come out with a doll with the capabilities of Julie!

I had one of these dolls...she used to really scare me when she would say something new. Sometimes I thought she was possessed. I had to keep her in my closet at night, because I was scared that she would come alive. Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy having this doll and I still have her, too. Although she doesn't work anymore.

mine always messed up and we'd have to reprogram her. it got to where you'd have to reprogram her every time you turned her on. they now just came out with a new one. hope it works better! but i did have fun with it. funny story- it turned on one night when i was spending the night at my cousin's house. freaked us out!

A long lost friend of mine helped create the doll. Only 500 were distributed before Coleco filed suit claiming infringement of their Chatty Cathy. Obviously, Chatty Cathy couldn't hold a candle to Julie, but my friend didn't have the funds needed to fight Coleco. I found one at an auction some years ago and recently gave her to my daughter. I've often wished I could find my friend to see if disks were available.

I got one of these dolls for Christmas when I was younger. My sister got the Jill doll the next year, which I thought was way better! I took Julie to school for show and tell and I remember being so embarrassed because she wouldn't respond to my voice! I kept saying "Julie music" over and over and she wouldn't do what she was supposed to!
Christy - January 01, 2009 - Report this comment
I LOVED THIS DOLL when I was a child. I would like to still have her today but I think she's lost forever. I remember one of her secret words was "melody" (not music). You could say either "Julie, sing me a melody" or "Julie, melody" and she will sing a short song. I can't remember any more right now but that one stick out in my memory!

My family still talks about how I would always talk to the doll in the same exact voice. Since they told me it recognized my voice I would always say "Juuuuulieeeeee?" in a really loud voice. Must have been fun for them. Didn't this doll also have to go to "sleep" at night? I remember having to cover her eyes until she "yawned" and fell asleep.

This was also my favorite doll as a child. I do have the original box, book, stickers, and outfit. The price tag on the box says it's $119.99 I do have a list of words that I had written out on a piece of paper when I was younger, but I'm pretty sure those are just words that she speaks.

i loved this doll. I got her when i was 7 i think. maybe earlier. i used to use her to scare my sisters sometimes. well whenever they'd pick on me. then she kinda started scaring me a little. one weekend i came home from my cousins house and she had a bump with a bruise on her right temple. needless to say it never disappeared. though i have many other stories about her wierding me out i still loved her. i don't have her anymore, unfortunately was not my decision, but i still have her book and her outfit is packed away somewhere in my closet. i would'nt mind getting another one just to have though.

I used to keep her in our basement family room. Julie was sensitive to both light and temperature. So all she would say was. I'm cold. And, Why is so dark in here.

I was just sitting here chuckling about Julie -- in particular, about my high expectations for her. They ran these very effective commercials in which a wise-sounding man would say all seriously, "Julie... the doll that understands." I thought she'd be a cross between a robot and a new best friend. I begged for her, got her for Christmas, and was totally disappointed! Would love to see one again.

OMG, I got Julie for Christmas when I was a little girl I LOVED her she was the best doll EVER even my younger brother liked her, he was also the one to poke one of her eyes out. I was so heartbroken but I also was little afraid of her after her eye accident. now years later I would love to buy one for my daughter. Anyone know where I can find one??

My daughter wanted this doll for Christmas in the 80's. I had never heard of it but found the last one on a shelf for $50.00 (I had heard it was $125. so I felt very lucky.) We loved playing with it and when she was at school I would program it to respond to me. It was WAY before it's time and I'm surprised they haven't come out with anything like it now. We also bought the books and extra disks so that she could do even more. She is now packed in original box waiting for grandchildren to play with it.

Our daughter, Adero, wanted this doll so bad for Christmas, I think it was in 1988. My husband and I lived in Shelby; had to look for this doll everywhere. We looked all over Charlotte and finally found it at Toys R Us when they were on Independence Blvd. To us this doll was expensive; about $112.00 at the time. We have her put up in the attic and we are expecting a granddaughter next month (Adero's 29 now). Guess we'll get it down in the next couple of months.

I got Julie for a Chrismas gift when I was in the 1st grade. She was so ahead of her time and nothing has compared to her technology since. However, she scared me to death. When I would have her in my lap riding in the car, she would ask "are we going somewhere?" Or when I would take her outside on a winter's day she would say "brr it's cold out here." Those are only a few observations she would make as we were playing together. I regret getting rid of her at a yard sale as a child but I was so terrified by her incredible knowledge of her surroundings and I never knew what else she was aware of...

My parents bought me this doll, and it scared the mess out of me! I never played with it. Randomly, in the middle of the night Julie would start talking, "Brrrrrr, it's getting cold in here." I'd screammmmmmmmmmm and run into my parents bed. I thought Julie was possessed--it was something about her eyes. Clearly, this doll left a lasting impression on me 23 YEARS later.

American Girl revived Julie (from some old toy company in the 1980s) and made her a superstar as of today. She still shines as an American Girl doll (that comes with book and original clothing). And No, SHE IS NOT CHUCKY ANYMORE (SHE IS A HISTORICAL AMERICAN GIRL DOLL CREATED BY AMERICAN GIRL)!

We got our daughter this doll back in the 80's for about 100 dollars. Julie was well before her time, talking and answering to her name when spoken to. Although my husband and I found Julie facinating, our daughter hated this doll and rarely played with it. She played with her Cabbage Patch doll more. We just recently cleaned out our attic and lo and behold we found Julie. I didn't hold out much hope that she would work after 25 years in storage but I was willing to try. I popped in new batteries, turned her on, and presto...she began to speak..Hi, I'm Julie. :) Brought back memories. I can't locate her book. I am going to search ebay and amazon to see if I can find one.

I got Julie as a little girl and I absolutely LOVED her. I have her original outfit, the pajama set, the sweatsuit, and her original book. My little girl (now 6) plays with her. When you first put her batteries in she will ask a series of questions. you need to be in a quiet room so she can hear your responses clearly. She then "remebers" your voice and how you said each clue word. EX: hungry, melody, be quiet, pretend, Julie, no, yes, and okay. Later when you play with her you have to repeat the words the same way you originally said them when she was remembering. When you play with her, it should be in a quiet area so she's not confused by other noise. This is how she works best. I would love to find other cartridges for her. My cousin had her "little sister, Pamela" doll who also talked. Good memories. I never was freaked out by her, but I also never saw Chucky :) I am glad I would never have wanted a movie to ruin the wonderful memories I have of playing for years with this doll!

I loved this doll and I still have her. My father probably bought her on sale sometime in '89 or so. He also managed to find me one cartridge for her. I thought she was amazing, though as a kid I sometimes had issues with her recognizing my voice and what words I was speaking. (Probably because I didn't speak clearly-- I was just a kid!) I recently pulled her out after nearly fifteen years in storage and she still works. Better than I remember. I can put her secret words into a sentence and she'll understand. (Like I can say, "Sing a melody." And she will.) She's a remarkable doll not just for the time period she came from, but even for now. I haven't seen any dolls like her.

I had purchased a Julie doll for my oldest daughter in the 80's. She becamee like a plastic member of our family. She didn't like our fireplace because she said that room was too hot. She asked my daughters to go get their parents because she needed batteries... I don't recall them playing with her after that. My dad loved Julie as much as my children. He would press the little buttom in to program her to interract with his voice also. And yes, you could tell her to go to sleep and she would, but all you had to do was call her name and back at it, she would be. Excellent toy!

When I was younger , my mom gave me Julie as a xmas gift. She made me happy. Yes, she did speak w/o batteries before, but that didn't bother me. I found her to be different. She will only speak differently with me, due to registering my voice. My sister and mom couldn't get her to speak the same way. My mom had me get rid of her in church. She believed doll was possessed. I enjoyed her, reluctantly I had to give her up. I was devastated!

I was just telling my 12 year old son about my Julie doll. Thank goodness for google. I loved her reactions- put her close to the light and she would say, it's bright in here. Cover her eyes- who turned out the lights? Loved the ice cream Q&A. I have no clue what happened to my Julie. And I had no idea how much she cost looking at the prices listed- yikes! My mom was a better Santa then I had even known :) I guess I'll have to get her an equivalent today's price Julie gift. Coach store here I come!

I am 62. A neighbor recently gave a Julie doll to my 4 year old granddaughter. There was something about the doll that I couldn't put my finger on. When my granddaughter played with it for the 1st time, it kept telling her "let's take a walk" and " let's go to the playground" as she was pushing it in her little doll stroller. I thought that was amazing. I became enamored with Julie as much as my granddaughter. We don't have any cartridges or books. It has never been programmed...I wouldn't even know how to do it... but she has said as many as 120 different phrases. I know because I kept a list. Occasionally, she still says something new. Is this typical? I have had a couple of unexplained things happen with Julie, but I am trying to keep an open mind. The amount of phrases she knows, and still comes up with something new, makes me very curious. Do others recall their doll saying that many things without any of the cartridges?

I bought the first Julie doll for my daughter at a goodwill store when she was about two years old. She loved Julie so much and ended up dragging her around for years. Eventually, Julie stopped working, so we got another Julie (or two) off of eBay. She still has ALL of them and she is 19 now and a Junior in College! Julie stories are a favorite way to remember her childhood! For those wanting to reset their Julie, there is a small reset button on her back near the battery area. You have to push the button (though I don’t remember if it is a sunken button or not). Either way, you use the button to rest Julie and then follow the prompts she gives. It will allow you to “voice train” her so that she responds to your specific voice. She will also explain her secret words to you! So, give it a try with some really fresh batteries and make some really cool new memories! Plus, hold her tummy in and listen for her to say “stop, that tickles” and laugh her silly mechanical laugh! We love Julie!

Hi, to anyone reading this does anyone know how to use the reusable stickers that come with the Julie doll? Apparently they are used to assist in book reading with Julie, does the doll actually interact with the stickers, do you put the stickers over the book hot spot, anyone know what you’re supposed to do with them and how they’re supposed to work when interacting with Julie?

It was Pamela that had the sensors in her fingers, not Julie…her books would have little metal things that when she touched them she said the word. Julie was a bit more interactive as she could sense light and temperature changes and would answer you when you said “Julie” she would say yes?. Either way they were all fun back then and innovative
