Food of the Eighties, Products Beginning with H
I've been asked a couple of times for information about what food was
specific to the 80s, so I've started a small list which I'm sure will grow
pretty rapidly. Cereals of the 80s have their own page.
This list contains items that were around before and after the 80s, I'm looking for
stuff that was still popular in the 80s. So this list will contain items
that were around in the 70s, and maybe earlier if they were still popular.
Please note! Zima and clear colas were a 90s fad, not an 80s fad! I know it might
seem like a long time ago, but that's only because they tasted so awful and were marketed so heavily.
(Somehow, Zima still persists, though no one has determined why).

Half-sized Cans Of Soda (Pepsi , Coke, 7-up)
Do you remember these? No one I talk to seems to remember. They were around in the early 80's...little cans of soda. They were the same diameter as a regular can of soda, just half as tall. I was just a little kid in the early 80's but I definitely remember. Maybe they were region- specific. (I'm in WA State) Do you remember them?
Hamburger Extender
Textured Vegetable Protein and Seasonings that you mixed with a small amount of Ground Beef before using to make it go farther. I think it was around during the early 1980's and meant to offset the high meat prices of that era.
Handi Snacks pizza cheese & crackers
I may be wrong, but I am pretty sure about these delicious cheese and crackers. They were my favorite.
Handi Snaks
Little packages of crackers and cheese with a plastic stick used to scrape cheese on to your cracker. They later came out with peanut butter. These were around before and after the 80s...
Hardee's Big Deluxe
This was a very flavorful hamburger from Hardee's before they became Carl's Jr.
Hardees (turkey club)
Came out in the late 80's before sub sandwiches ie Subway, were popular nation wide. These were good turkey, bacon, lots of warm mayo on a grain bun.
Harry Caray's Bubble Gum Soda
Pink carbonated drink in 2 liters that seemed to have the same reaction as Jolt. Maybe it was only around the Chicago area, but it was still quite the treat.
Hawaiian Kettle Chips
These were a thickly cut type of potato chip that came out in the Mid-80's. They came in giant bags and were really cheap
Heart
It was an icecream - really creamy vanilla icecream and covered in milk chocolate. The packaging was bright red and said "Have a...Heart". It was a really nice icecream, but I tried it a few years back, and the quality is not as good nowadays.
Hershey Granola Bars
They were granola bars made by Hershey's(came in a brown box) and the peanut butter ones tasted like a Whatamacallit candy bar(without the carmel). Very GOOD!!
Heyday Bars
Nabisco use to make these cookies which were very delicious but for some reason stopped making them. They were wafers covered with caramel and chocolate and had nuts on the top. I think I'm missing another ingredient but they were delicous.
Hi-C Candy Apple Cooler
Apple tasting(sort of?) very sweet, not unlike all Hi-C juice drinks!
Hi-C Ecto Cooler
Remember the Hi-C drink that had the character from the Ghostbusters that came out after the movie? That was the nastiest drink. Who wants to drink green orange-flavored juice??????
Hidden Valley Party Dip
This was a powder dip that you'd mix with Sour Cream to make THE BEST dip for chips. Can't find it anymore but definitely know I ate my share in the 80s!
Hockey Pucks
Early eighties big thing was to make Hockey pucks a hard candy in the shape of a hockey puck
Hooplas
They were small rings flavored with nacho cheese or plain corn chips.
Hostess Choco-Bliss
It was a hostess snack cake of the 80s. It was a layer of chocolate sponge cake, layer of choco frosting, another layer of choco sponge and a thick layer of choco topping like the toppings on Zingers. Came in Chocolate and Chocolate Mint. Very rich and filling I remember.
Hostess Puddin pies
These are just like the Hostess fruit pies, but they are filled with vanilla or chocolate pudding. The entire pie was dipped in chocolate. The ad campaign consisted of the slogan "Puddin Power".
Hostess Pudding Pie
Just like the Hostess Fruit Pies but they contained pudding inside. They were really quite good.
Hot Cuts
It was a sliced, formed piece of "topping" that you put on top of a piece of toasted bread to create a hot, open faced sandwich. This product was sold next to the packaged lunch meats at the local A&P. I believe there were several flavors; I remember the pepperoni pizza (very tasty) and roast beef with gravy.
Hot Fries
Chips shaped like fries...very hot...Andy Capp was on the bag.
Hot Pockets
One of the many microwavable products that came out in the 80s. Basically a breaded pocket that holds different foods inside such as ham and cheese, cheese and brocolli, pizza, etc.
Hot and Cold Nerds
These were around in the late '80s. I remember them well. They were like regular Nerds, but instead of being fruit-flavored, one side of the package held Hot (red, cinnamon-flavored) Nerds, and the other side of the box held Cold (light blue, wintergreen-flavored) Nerds. I used to LOVE these things! They tasted great when you put some of both flavors in your mouth at once. Sadly, they disappeared in the '90s.
Hotdogs
Hotdogs was gum that had a cinnamon flavor and came packaged just like real hotdogs.
Hubba Bubba Bubble Gum
I remember Hubba Bubba Bubble Gum. It came in like a million flavors I remember even Root Beer and Cola. On Saturday mornings during the ever famous cartoons, the commercials for Hubba Bubba always had some cowboy in it. The only bad part of Hubba Bubba is that the flavor didnt last a long time and the gum itself turned hard. I miss it though!
Hubba Bubba or Buble Up pop
I can't remember which is the correct name for the soda, but it was a bubble gum flavored soda. It was in a pink can and there was a diet also.
Hula Chews
Dark chocolate covered coconut pieces. THey rocked!
Hush Puppies
From Long John Silvers. Not too many of them around anymore. I just loved these things. Hate fish, so I had a basket of hush puppies. MMmmmm.
Hydrox Chocolate Cookies
These were basically the same exact cookies as Oreos but made by a company called Hydrox and were a lot better than Oreos.
