Eighties Cover Songs, Songs Beginning with A

Thanks to Warren Bakay for suggesting this page to me, I hadn't even realized until he mentioned it, the music industry is dredging up big hits from the last decade due to a not-so-surprising lack of imagination by the current stars. This should of course come to no suprise to most people, some big hits of the eighties were covers as well ("Mickey", "Der Kommisar", "You Keep Me Hanging On" (which was remade into a hit four times so far)). So far though, most covers have been pretty hideous. We only list songs that are originally from the eighties and are now being made into covers. We also only list a band if they're already well known or the group is making a lot of radio play with the remake.

Oh and to clear up a misconception a few people out there seem to be having about this page (and sending me very nasty letters). I have no problem with artists who do a cover of a song in concert, or because they are just starting out and don't have enough original material of their own for a full set of songs. As a matter of fact, cover bands can be great fun to go and see. All groups in modern history start out this way, I own a lot of The Beatles albums and they were the original cover group. A lot of early rock songs were covers of old R&B tunes. It's a fact of life.

"About A Girl", Originally by Nirvana, Remade by Cibo Matto
Yeah, Nirvana was mostly a 90's phenomenon, but About a Girl was released in 1989, so it's an 80's song whether you like it or not. The Cibo Matto version is wildly different, with the awesome Japanese accented lyrics. It can be found on their "Moonchild" single, but good luck finding that. It's easier to download it from somewhere.
"Abracadabra", Originally by Steve Miller Band, Remade by Sugar Ray
Not bad not that it was the most memorable Steve Miller song.Cover music wise, sounds almost like the original-'cept different singer.
"Abracadabra", Originally by Steve Miller, Remade by Sugar Ray
I thought is was a great cover. I saw that you didn't post it. I mean, for it being Sugar Ray, it's sounds almost as good as the original. I love the song in the first place, and I think they did it justice.
"Ace of Spades", Originally by Motorhead, Remade by Carbon H
Excellent cover, I was really impressed with this one can be found on www.windowsmedia.com so go check it out and i think you to will be impresed if your a fan of Semi-metal covers of old punk songs.
"Aces High", Originally by Iron Maiden, Remade by Arch Enemy
If you like death metal, or Arch Enemy for that matter, you'll love this. I love the girls voice, so I think this kicks MAJOR @$$!!! (Also I love deathmetal so...)
"Aces High", Originally by Iron Maiden, Remade by Children of Bodom
Both original and cover are really good. Children of Bodom gives their particular voice style to this Maiden's classic. Highly recommended.
"Africa", Originally by Toto, Remade by Howie Day
Unique interpretation, but really fun to listen to and sing along with.
"Africa", Originally by Toto, Remade by Mowett & Loon
This cover, called "Tru Rider" is from the "Biker Boyz" soundtrack. The beat is the same, but there are different lyrics. It's pretty good if you like R&B or Hip-Hop. I'm into 80s music & R&B/Hip-Hop, so I really liked both versions.
"Africa", Originally by Toto, Remade by Pyogenesis
this song is realy great, is lake original song but sounds better this is a metal cover
"Africa", Originally by Toto, Remade by Ja Rule - The Reign
"Africa", Originally by Toto, Remade by Virginia Coalition
Very, very good interpretation of a very difficult song to pull off. Check it out.
"Against All Odds", Originally by Phil Collins, Remade by DeJavu featuring Tasmin
Not a good song PERIOD, but if I had to choose the better one it would be Phil Collins' version.
"Against All Odds", Originally by Phil Collins, Remade by Postal Service
the postal service duo combines the musical talent of dntel with the vocal talent of death cab for cutie into one masterpiece-creating band. this cover is no exception.
"Against All Odds", Originally by Phil Collins, Remade by Westlife and Mariah Carey
Mariah might have killed Phil's feeling with her improvisation, but Westlife actually improved the background by adding choral passages that were missing in the original.
"Against All Odds", Originally by Phil Collins, Remade by The Postal Service
Original was great as well as the Cover. Both well very done. Can not say which I like more.
"Against All Odds", Originally by Phil Collins, Remade by The Postal Service
Considering that the original is nauseating at best, this is a great cover.
"Against All Odds (Take A Look At Me Now)", Originally by Phil Collins, Remade by Mariah and Westlife
I detest this version, Westlife I hate and their vocals are horrible. Mariah should do only orginal music, she is much better that way
"Ain't Nobody", Originally by Chaka Khan, Remade by Liberty X
Not quite as good as the 1980's original but much more sexy and more modern. Chaka Khan is a 1980's pop legend but the 80's divas were minging people like Cyndi Lauper, Whitney Houston and Tina Turner. But two divas called Annie Lennox and Madonna were quite nice.
"Ain't Talikin' About Love", Originally by Van Halen, Remade by The Minutemen
Great Live Cover. A little lo-fi, but D. Boon stands his ground against Eddie Van Halen...almost surprising how proficient a musician he was, considering how sloppy he often opted to play. Great stuff.
"Ain't Talking Bout Love", Originally by Van Halen, Remade by Razed In Black
A techno version. With guitars. Pretty good I must say.
"All Along The Watchtower", Originally by Bob Dylan, Remade by Dave Matthews Band
How could you have forgotten Dave Matthew Band's version of this song, maybe behind Hendrix's cover, the best, they brought this song to a higher level!
"All Along The Watchtower", Originally by ???, Remade by Many Bands
People/Bands who have covered this song so far: Jimi Hendrix, Indigo Girls, Eric Clapton, U2, Pat McGee Band, Blues Traveler, Greatful Dead, Howie Day, Dave Mason & Jim Capaldi. Any one else cover this song?
"All Cried Out", Originally by Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam feat. Full Force, Remade by Allure and 112
I LIKE THE ORIGINAL VERSION BETTER THAN I LIKE THE COVER VERSION.BUT THE COVER IS IS JAMMIN AS WELL.
"All Cried Out", Originally by Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam with Full Force, Remade by Allure
both are pretty good, but the Lisa Lisa version is way better. Most 90's kids hate the 80's version though.
"All Cried Out", Originally by Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam, Remade by Allure
Amazingly so, the Allure 90's version is better than the original
"All I Ever Wanted ", Originally by Depeche Mode, Remade by Evergreen Terrace
Excellent cover song very hardcore but melodic at the same time ET is sweet
"All I Need", Originally by Marvin Gaye & Tammi Tarell, Remade by Method Man & Mary J. Blige
i like this one from method man better, because i like hip hop. the original song is sweet but i don't like it :)
"All I Want is You", Originally by U2, Remade by The Mission UK
Great cover.... sounds *almost* as good as the original... of course, the mission uk rock!! This is a gothic or synth pop style cover.. highly reccommended!
"All Mixed Up", Originally by The Cars, Remade by Red House Painters
This cover is very different from the original. I didn't notice it on the board but just in case its not there, I thought I ought to mention it. Its a fantastic cover, and can be found on the Red House Painters album 'Songs for a blue guitar', and the soundtrack for 'Excess Baggage'. The song was originally released in 1984 (or, so I'm told!).
"All Out Of Love", Originally by Air Supply, Remade by Soluna
The cover was done by a recent girl group off their latest album For All Time. A good cover of an ok song. Air Supply was never one of my favorite bands, so I liked hearing girls singing it instead of a guy.
"All Out Of Love", Originally by Air Supply, Remade by Nu Flavor And Jagged Edge
"All That She Wants", Originally by Ace of Base, Remade by Wizo
I know I know... All That She Wants is early 90s, but this is the most b'dass song cover I've heard.
"All The Way", Originally by Sly Fox, Remade by Insane Clown Posse
i liked the original but this is far better i love this cover
"All We Are", Originally by Warlock, Remade by Donots
Cool cover version by the German Punk Band "The Donots". From the 7 track special EP "Donots go Metal"
"Alone", Originally by Heart, Remade by Robert Forster
Great cover... very toned down & melancholy... off his covers album "I Had a New York Girlfriend"...
"Always Something There To Remind Me", Originally by Burt Bacharach, Remade by Naked Eyes
"Always Something There To Remind Me" by Naked Eyes ???!!?? Nope it's a cover itself of a Burt Bacharach song...but as covers go...it's a great one!
"Amazing Grace", Originally by Traditional, Remade by Dropkick Murphys
amazing grace with bagpipes.... way cool its shorter though not the entire song
"Amazing Grace", Originally by Traditional, Remade by Ani DiFranco
It's very different from the church sound...it has a good beat and her Ani is amazing! I love this version!
"America", Originally by Simon and Garfunkel, Remade by Yes
Excellent rock version of a folk classic
"American Nightmare", Originally by Misfits, Remade by Amazing Crowns
no one has ever really done a misfits cover justice, but, all in all, this isnt bad. its really really fast, with a psycho-billy feel to it. ok,so maybe it is a little bad. but its fun.
"American Pie", Originally by Don McLean, Remade by Madonna
I know this song wasnt in the 80s. But it is truly the worst cover I have ever heard. There are some songs that should just be untouched, and a cover should never be made of them. That is the case for American Pie.
"American Pie", Originally by Don McLean, Remade by Catch 22
wicked ska/punk cover, goes a little too long, but still awesome! -spanky-
"And I'm Telling You", Originally by Jennifer Holliday, Remade by Shirley Murdock
Not to say that Shirley Murdock is not a fantastic singer, but the only person that I have heard rival Jennifer is ex-American Idol contestant, Frenchie Davis. Shirley does not ignite the passion of what I consider to be the most emotional song EVER. The cover is very lackluster for such a cable vocal performer.
"Angel", Originally by Jimi Hendrix, Remade by Fiona Apple
"Angie", Originally by Rolling Stones, Remade by Probably Duran Duran
Very good site and still waiting for the answer. Thank you.
"Angie", Originally by Rolling Stones, Remade by Tori Amos
cool
"Another Brick In The Wall", Originally by Pink Floyd, Remade by Class Of '99
"Another Brick In The Wall Pt 2", Originally by Pink Floyd, Remade by The Stepkings
A great cover by a great alternative metal band..... stepkings are the kings
"Another Brick In The Wall Pt 2", Originally by Pink Floyd, Remade by ArchaiC
This Cover is an industrial metal style cover, i dont know who the and ArchaiC is, but im interested in listening to more of their stuff, i found this cover on kazaa by mistake, the cover is pretty damn cool, it has it's own feel and everything, but it doesnt stray to far from the original like so many shitty covers i've heard before, overall it's a truly rockin cover. Even better than the one from the faculty soundtrack *Class of 99"
"Another Brick In The Wall Pt. 2", Originally by Pink Floyd, Remade by Class of 99'
very good version, as good as the original. band features layne staley of alice in chains/mad season on vocals. featured in the movie "the faculty"
"Another Brick In the Wall", Originally by Pink Floyd, Remade by Marylin Manson
I don't much care for the freak, overall, but I always end up liking his cover songs. This one isn't up there with Tainted Love or Sweet Dreams, but its OK.
"Another Brick in the Wall", Originally by Pink Floyd, Remade by Korn
I personally liked the Korn, but i can never say it beats the original since I am a loyal fan to Pink FLoyd
"Another Brick in the Wall", Originally by Pink Floyd, Remade by Luther Wright and the Wrongs
Loved it. Style was like "Ghostriders in the Sky". Made me laugh with the whipcracks and stuttering bass lines. I guess the cover band redid the whole "Wall" album and called it "Rebuilding the Wall"
"Another Brick in the Wall", Originally by Pink Floyd, Remade by Alice in Chains
Good... Good... Very Good, (Muy chingona)
"Another Day In Paradise", Originally by Phil Collins, Remade by Brandi
Hate it....
"Antmusic", Originally by Adam and the Ants, Remade by OK Go
OK Go butchered this awesome, catchy song. Stay far away, and stick to the original by Adam and the Ants.
"Antmusic", Originally by Adam and the Ants, Remade by Robbie Williams
The original is much better than Robbie's cover. Sorry, Robbie!
"Anything Anything", Originally by Dramarama, Remade by BuckCherry
Great cover of the song. Buckcherry's version is faster and adds a lead riff that wasn't in the original song. Not surprising this song was made "punk-ish" since the chord pattern is not complicated. This is on the soundtrack for the movie "Road Trip"
"Anything Anything", Originally by Dramarama, Remade by Buckcherry
"Anything, Anything", Originally by Dramarama, Remade by Something Corporate
A good cover but only a live version. The band gets so into it, its awesome. I heard the original first and buck cherrys version but i like this one the best.
"Anyway You Want It", Originally by Journey, Remade by Rise Against
I like the original but I am more of a rock person and I believe this is a great remake
"Are 'Friends' Electric?", Originally by Gary Numan, Remade by Information Society
First off, it's pretty cool to hear one 80's band cover another. InSoc does AFE in a much more orchestral way than the original, but Kurt Harland's singing works perfectly with Gary Numan's songs.
"Are Friends Electric", Originally by Gary Numan, Remade by Rosetta Stone
Nice goth version by Liverpool band in a similar style to Sisters and Mission but a bit more synthy.
"Are Friends Electric", Originally by Gary Numan, Remade by The Replicants
very cool
"Are Friends Electric", Originally by Gary Numan, Remade by An Pierlé
it's really a great cover, it really struck me when i first heard it
"Are Friends Electric?", Originally by Gary Numan, Remade by Information Society
Yes, they are still around. Since the band is now only Kurt, the have got quite a bit darker (ok a whole lot).
"As", Originally by Stevie Wonder, Remade by Mary J. Blige & George Michael
I really love the cover. The original has a different feel to it and is outrageous too. Too bad MJB & GM didn't include the complete lyrics though.
"As We Lay", Originally by Shirley Murdock, Remade by Kelly Price
Mrs. Price did an extraordinary job with the cover of this Soul/R&B classic love song!
"Ashes to Ashes", Originally by Bowie, Remade by A Perfect Circle
I'm a huge APC fan, and it was the first version of the song I heard, so I have to say I like it best.
"Astro Zombies", Originally by Misfits, Remade by My Chemical Romance
In My Opinion I Thought I Was Actually Very Good!
"Astronomy Domine", Originally by Pink Floyd, Remade by Voivod
The original is always better, but this Canadian industrial rock band did a good cover of this Pink Floyd tune on their 1989 album Nothingface.
"Atlantis", Originally by Donovan, Remade by No Angels
The new version is HOT!
"Atomic Dog", Originally by George Clinton, Remade by Snoop Doggy Dog
Just because Snoop changed the name of the song and some of the lyrics around that doesn't make this cover any more great than it is. Snoop twisted this song and killed it completely.
"Aventurier (L')", Originally by Indochine, Remade by The Kingpins
A french synthe-pop melody turned into a ska-pop fresh song !
"Aventurier (L')", Originally by Indochine, Remade by Sleazy Arse
Nice little synthe-pop song from the first album of the french group "Indochine" turned up in an energetic punk riff. Punk once, punk always
