Eighties Cover Songs, Songs Beginning with D
Thanks to Warren Bakay for suggesting this page to me, I hadn't even
realized until he mentioned it, the music industry is dredging up big
hits from the last decade due to a not-so-surprising lack of imagination by
the current stars. This should of course come to no suprise to
most people, some big hits of the eighties were covers
as well ("Mickey", "Der Kommisar", "You Keep Me Hanging On" (which was remade into a
hit four times so far)). So far though, most covers have been pretty
hideous. We only list songs that are originally from the eighties and are now being made
into covers. We also only list a band if they're already well known
or the group is making a lot of radio play with the remake.
Oh and to clear up a misconception a few people out there seem to be having
about this page (and sending me very nasty letters). I have no problem with
artists who do a cover of a song in concert, or because they are just
starting out and don't have enough original material of their own for a full
set of songs. As a matter of fact, cover bands can be great fun to
go and see. All groups in modern history start out this way, I own a lot of
The Beatles albums and they were the original cover group. A lot of
early rock songs were covers of old R&B tunes. It's a fact of life.

excellent song, it was made by some death metal band which had barney from napalm death doing the vocals on it. it was good, i got in downloaded from www.winmx.com so go there if you wanna hear it.
, Originally by
Patti Smith, Remade by
Xymox
OMG!!! I didn't actually know that U2 or anyone else (including the original artist) had done this song. Xymox's version is about 100 times more sensual, enchanting, and chanting IMHO. I love Xymox anyhow...Their female singer for this bit makes Patti sound like Stimpy...
, Originally by
Bruce Springsteen, Remade by
Pete Yorn
It's sweet, folksy, and lonely, without the humming dance beats and MTV posing. You can tell Yorn put effort into this, and it pays off. Basically, this is the way Springsteen should've played it - and he would have if it were issued on any album except "Born in the U.S.A."
, Originally by
ABBA, Remade by
Jennifer Love Hewitt
What was Love thinking? I know that ABBA is back in vogue, but some people just weren't born to cover their songs.
, Originally by
ABBA, Remade by
Sixpenser None The Richier
Good cover of this song, full of acoustic guitars and females voices.
, Originally by
Billy Idol, Remade by
Guttermouth
I love Guttermouth, they did a f***ing great job, you can listen to the version on their website www.xxx-guttermouth-xxx.com.
, Originally by
Billy Idol, Remade by
Green Day
The Green Day cover is much better than Blink 182's (Billie Joe can nail the Billy Idol voice much more accurately) but it's pretty similar to the original anyway.
, Originally by Billy Idol, Remade by Blink182

yeah its great mark and tom pull of very high pitched singing in it along with a nice joke at the end.
, Originally by
The Cars, Remade by
Letters to Cleo
(on the Craft soundtrack along with "How Soon is Now" (The Smiths/Love Spit Love) and "I Have the Touch" (Peter Gabriel/Heather Nova). Tess and I both agree that this is probably one of the cooler The Cars covers to be found and easily the best cover on the soundtrack. While the Love Spit Love version of "How Soon is Now" is good, the deviation from the original is minimal and Heather Nova simply butchered Peter Gabriel.
, Originally by
Elton John, Remade by
Fuel
Amazing acoustic cover. One of the best covers ever made.
, Originally by
Anne Murray, Remade by
Me First
Probably the greatest cover song of all time
, Originally by
Weird Al Yankovic, Remade by
Techmo Super Bowl
Saw 'em play it live. Needed a little work, but what was there sounded pretty good. Covering Weird Al is just plain cool. Dare to be Stupid makes a pretty good rock song.
, Originally by
Dolly Parton, Remade by
The White Stripes
The new one's pretty damn good!
, Originally by
Prince, Remade by
Rebecca Romijn Stamos
great,alt sound,really sexy still & laid back but still rocks.worth a listen definately,different 2 FooFighter's cover,which rocks seriously!
, Originally by
Prince, Remade by
Foo Fighters
This was a great song to begin with, but after hearing the Foo Fighters remake now I think it rocks.
, Originally by
Prince, Remade by
Foo Fighters
I think Prince is King and didn't think I could love a Prince song by anyone else. The first time I heard the Foos version of this sexy song I wasn't quite sure about it. But they really managed to put their own twist on it while keeping it true to Prince's original creation. If you have only heard it once, give it another listen. It starts to grow on you and is actually pretty good.
, Originally by
Prince, Remade by
Dishwalla
heard them do it live a few times,at first i wasn't too impressed, but then it started to grow on me,know i think they do a great version of it,some things just take time.
, Originally by
Prince, Remade by
Foo Fighters
At first I was taken aback by the alternative/punk rock style of the remake, but after listening to the whole thing on the radio, I realized it really rips.

, Originally by
Badfinger, Remade by
Savatage
Off an early Savatage album (Power of the Night or Fight For the Rock?) and a well done remake. Sounds very close to the original with a bit more guitars. But I'm a Savatage fan too...
, Originally by
Badfinger, Remade by
Exotic Birds
A cool techno-ish version of this song put out by this rare group. If you want to hear some up beat pre-Pretty Hate Machine trentamentals then find this album.
, Originally by
Joy Division, Remade by
Honeymoon Stitch
VERY. VERY. GOOD. I absolutely love it.
, Originally by
The Beatles, Remade by
Type O Negative
A little slower and a lot darker sounding then the beatles. It actually has some other beatles songs mixed into parts of it. Not great but decent.
, Originally by
Beatles, Remade by
Daniel Ash
Hey, for an ex Love and Rockets singer what can you say? It's a bit alternative (80s speaking not currently) in its sound. I'll take this over the poor punk version anytime.
, Originally by
Joy Division, Remade by
Spiral Of Silence
Pretty good cover. Starts off sounding like a techno song, but sways towards rock.
, Originally by XTC, Remade by Tricky
, Originally by
XTC, Remade by
Shootyz Groove
Great cover song by a rock/hip-hop band!
, Originally by
The Beatles, Remade by
Siouxsie and the Banshees
A vast improvement on the Beatles version, which will forever be mistakenly remembered as Banshees original, just as Tainted Love is considered a Soft Cell song.
, Originally by
Misfits, Remade by
Cradle Of Filth
agian, very good but nobody can do it better than the misfits.
, Originally by
Falco, Remade by
After The Fire
I thought both were great, but if the music vids are anything to go by, I'd pick Falco's any day.
, Originally by
DAF, Remade by
Atrocity
A metal version of DAF's 80s NDW song by the German band "Atrocity". From their album "Werk 80", which contains a whole bunch of great metal versions of popular 80s songs.
, Originally by
The Eagles, Remade by
Garth Brooks
The Garth Brooks redo of this song is excellent. Bringing it down a half-step makes it much easier for the lower voices like mine to sing. Excellently redone!
, Originally by
The Eagles, Remade by
Clint Black
I think Clint Black does a better rendition only because I'm a country fan. Check it out and see for yourself
, Originally by
Missing Persons, Remade by
Erectus Monotone
Very fuzzed out, spastic and brilliant. It retains all of the spacey feel of the original, without any of the synth-pop touches. Erectus Monotone was a guitar band, and this cover is quite worth your time. Very nice.
, Originally by
Missing Persons, Remade by
the Replicants
(Technically this is a cover band even though all members are from "real" bands; i.e. Tool & Failure). This really sounds almost completely different from the original which was probably the intent. Very industrial and the best part is the alien abduction sequence.
, Originally by
KISS, Remade by
Mighty Mighty Bosstones
A great song to begin with, the Bosstones add heavier guitars and their horns section to make it even better.
, Originally by
Kiss, Remade by
Alien Fashion Show (NOT the cherry poppin daddies)
One of the best swing songs ever, so crediting it to the wrong band is a shame. Alien Fashion Show apparently broke up, which is also a shame because they had a tremendous amount of talent.
, Originally by
Kiss, Remade by
Cherry Poppin Daddies
Excelent cover of "Detroit Rock City", more brass, more swing! Big band's style
, Originally by
Charlie Daniels Band, Remade by
Lynn Anderson
Actually Charlie Daniels covered Lynn's version..Its a great twist to hear a woman sing this..its realy good...but very hard to find
, Originally by
The Charlie Daniels Band , Remade by
The Levellers
A storming version, faster & harder and much more fun to dance to!
, Originally by
Charlie Daniels Band, Remade by
Primus
amazing remake
, Originally by
The Charlie Daniels Band, Remade by
Toy Dolls
A really good hard and faster punk cover with great solos. The main difference is the title change from Georgia to Scornthrope and a golden guitar instead of a fiddle.
, Originally by
Robert Palmer, Remade by
Mariah Carey
I actually liked it!! I LOVE 80's music, and I actually look to see if anyone can do it any justice by covering an 80's song. They usually don't but it's always nice to hear and critique it. I love Robert Palmer and I love Mariah. I liked her verion of it. It is on the "Glitter" movie Soundtrack.
, Originally by
PM Dawn, Remade by

good cover. they work good together
, Originally by
Misfits, Remade by
NOFX, Metallica
The orginal was recorded by Misfits
, Originally by
Misfits, Remade by
Metallica
It pretty much kicks a**. By the way, INXS did not do this song originally, and to the best of my knowledge Everclear has not covered it, as it shows in the list.
, Originally by
AC/DC, Remade by
Joan Jett
What is it with Joan Jett and covering songs? And, more to the point, what it is about her that makes the covers so GOOD? Oh, it's not AS good as AC/DC's original...but it's kick-ass for an early 90s song.
, Originally by
AC/DC, Remade by
Exodus
Amazing, Exodus is a great thrash band, and they did a great job, the vocals even sound similar!
, Originally by
AC/DC, Remade by
Scream
Didn`t think a chick could sing like bon until I heard this its magic
, Originally by
Don Henley, Remade by
Lisa Marie Presley
awsome remake/ the kings daughter carves her own place in the books great song
, Originally by Scotch, Remade by Evolution
, Originally by
The Cure, Remade by
Converge
amazing. way better than the original. mellower in parts, heavier in others. very emotional. a must-listen.
, Originally by
The Cure, Remade by
Razed in Black
a great cover of a great song
, Originally by
Prince, Remade by
Melisa Morgan
I think that both versions are classics, but Melisa's sounds a lot better to me. The strange thing is that Prince's version was recorded in the early 1980s and Melisa released her's in 1986, as both are 1980s records. Both are soulful efforts and speaks well of their artistry.
, Originally by
Roxy Music, Remade by
Alphaville
What can I say - I liked the original, but I just loved the cover! They've put a great deal of experimentation and so much energy in the new version that one simply can't resist "dancing on moonbeams" while listening to this bright composition!
, Originally by
Band-Aid, Remade by
Deftones
Way better than that weepy, poor me version. This rocks.
, Originally by
Band-Aid, Remade by
BNL, Guster, and Dido
I thought Band-Aid was better...perhaps a little more sincere too, since there was a major drought in Africa in 1984
, Originally by
Rod Stewart, Remade by
N-Trance
Great beat! If you like your songs to have a good solid ethic dance sound, this is perfect!
, Originally by
Rod Stewart, Remade by
Paris Hilton
No offense intended, but Paris' vapid, borderline copyright-infringing rendition is, according to mathematical calculations performed by powerful university computers, is only one ten-thousandth as good as Rod's cool version. (Anyhoo, the original was really, really awesome.)
, Originally by
Rod Stewart, Remade by
Hoobastank
This is also a decent remake of the original.
, Originally by Rod Stewert, Remade by N Trance
, Originally by
Diana Ross, Remade by
Pinhead Gunpowder
Well, as far as sounding nothing like the original, I'm glad. I think the original is a horribly boring 60s song, and I didn't even know this was a cover until my mother was singing along and told me it was. The cover is MUCH more interesting.
, Originally by
Diana Ross, Remade by
Jennifer Lopez
I actually think both version of the song are great and they are both breath taking.
, Originally by
Culture Club, Remade by
Less Than Jake
A very good cover, better than the original. But it's not really a big surprise, Less than jake is a great band (just listen to it's other stuff).
, Originally by
Jackson Browne, Remade by
Ben Folds
The Jackson Browne version is definately better, but I'd have to say Ben Folds beats Jackson on piano.
, Originally by
INXS, Remade by
The Goo Goo Dolls
I was VERY skeptical at first (the original is a classic), but I give kudos to The Goo Goo Dolls for keeping the basic "flava" of the song while retaining their own sound.
, Originally by
INXS, Remade by
Grinspoon
Excellent version of a classic song of the 80's
, Originally by
INXS, Remade by
Goo Goo Dolls
Pretty good remake; they made it sound like their own...
, Originally by
Crowded House, Remade by
Sixpense None the Richer
Much sweeter and cuter than the original. I still like the original MUCH better though - its a classic.
, Originally by
Crowded House, Remade by
Six Feet Under
How strange is this cover?
, Originally by
Crowded House, Remade by
Sixpence None The Richer
Funny thing, I don't recall the Dixie Chicks ever covering Crowded House, but I do recall Sixpence None The Richer covering Crowded House. It's a very good cover at that.
, Originally by
Crowded House, Remade by
Sixpence None The Richer
A couple years ago, I heard Crowded House's 1987 hit, "Don't Dream It's Over" and they recently remade that song by Sixpence None The Richer. But like the Crowded House better. So I got "Don't Dream It's Over" by Crowded House. I got an 80's CD for Easter 2003 with Crowded House's, "Don't Dream It's Over" on it. I like the original song better.
, Originally by
Croweded House, Remade by
Kids Incorporated, Sixpence None The Richer
It was good.
, Originally by
Crowded House, Remade by
Dixie Chicks
Okay, but the original by Crowded House and the cover by Sixpence none the Richer are better.
, Originally by
Blue Oyster Cult, Remade by
The Mutton Birds
Can be found on "The Frighteners" soundtrack.
, Originally by
Blue Oyster Cult , Remade by
Goo goo Dolls
This is a very punky version its off the goo goo dolls first album, before they became very popular.
, Originally by
Blue Oyster Cult Band, Remade by
Eliott Smith
I saw an Elliott Smith show on Halloween a few years ago and he did this cover as part of an encore. It was such a fun cover.
, Originally by
Blue Oyster Cult, Remade by
HIM
A cool gothic version of this great song. From the album "Greatest Love Songs Vol. 666", released quite some time before the gothic scandinavian band HIM became teen idols!
, Originally by
Blue Oyster Cult, Remade by
Apollo 440
Excellent! AS good as the original if not better. Has a techno/dance beat to it. Worth a listen, especially if you like techno!
, Originally by
Blue Oyster Cult, Remade by
Gus
Slowed down quite a bit. A very good acoustic cover. I believe this version was on the Scream Soundtrack.
, Originally by
Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush, Remade by
Maire Brennan and Michael McDonald
It's obvious that Michael doesn't have the range of voice that Kate has. And Maire should stick to her Clannad.
, Originally by
Yazoo, Remade by
Atrocity
A metal version of this song by the German band "Atrocity". From their album "Werk 80", which contains a whole bunch of great metal versions of popular 80s songs. One of the weaker songs on this album, horrible voice.
, Originally by
Beatles, Remade by
Stereophonics
it's even better than original version.this because of the good recording technology(i believe)
, Originally by
Chris DeBurgh, Remade by
Dark At Dawn
A heavy metal remake of Chris DeBurghs big hit. This song works well as a metal song.
, Originally by Luther Ingram , Remade by Aswad

Midnight Oil, Remade by
Grinspoon
This song sorta sucks but i still love grinspoon
, Originally by
Simple Minds, Remade by
Billy Idol
Billy recorded it for a recent greatest-hits compilation. Ironically, the Breakfast Club producers originally offered the song to him before Simple Minds.
, Originally by

Very excellent if you like me are highly entertained by dark covers of 80's Pop songs.
, Originally by
Simple Minds, Remade by

It was pretty good Rock Version of it!! It's on the "Not Another Teen Movie" DVD Check it out!!
, Originally by

A pretty good punk cover if I do say so myself.
, Originally by

Life Of Agony
Very Good. Off The Album "ugly." I Like This Band Alot And It Is Rumored They Are Coming Out With A New Album After A Break-up.
, Originally by
Simple Minds, Remade by

very creepy, very dark, kind of like something you would hear in a Vampire movie.
, Originally by
Simple Minds, Remade by
Sprung Monkey
i can't beleive no one posted this song!! this is a rock version of the song and it's alot better than the original!! worth a listen!!
, Originally by
Human League, Remade by
Mandy
A pretty bad late 80's Stock Aitken Waterman cover of the Human League chart topper. It gave Mandy Smith who's married to one of the Rolling Stones her only UK chart entry. Like the mid 90's Stock and Aitken version with Tatijana, Mandy sings the whole song with a few word changes. Still sounds a bit daft.
, Originally by
Human League, Remade by
Future Bible Heroes
It's a tribute, very straight-up, so it's not too interesting. Stephin Merritt sings what was originally the female part, so we get a tiny bit of gender role swapping fun.
, Originally by
Human League, Remade by
Alcazar
Pretty dull new disco remake by Alcazar who come from Sacandinavia.
, Originally by
Jefferson Airplane, Remade by

This Version Rox and all the info he says in it is coreect about the rolling stones concert where they had hell's angels as security but it uberly ROX!

Comes off of the Brazilian tribute "Essence". Hard, industrial sound, speeds the song up and goes good on the dancefloor. Great job really.
, Originally by
Gary Numan, Remade by
Foo Fighters
I think they did a great job covering this song. Dave Grohl has an energy about him that's not like I've ever seen before.
, Originally by
Men at Work, Remade by
Pennywise
Awful "surf's up, big baggy jeans with chains hanging off, wise-cracking fat drummer, we do speeded-up versions of the Beach Boys, we don't take the whole stupid music business seriously" version of an 80's classic which, if the technology had existed at the time, would have been formatted 'Read Only'.
, Originally by
Men at Work, Remade by
Colin Hay
Front man from Men at Work doing an acoustic cover of his own band's song...and it's a thousand times better than the original! Only available on a recent solo CD.
, Originally by

From the Austrailian release of their Straight Ahead, this is an awesome punk rock cover.
, Originally by

i think the Violent Fems did the best job! (Other than the orig.)

Really hate eminem for this,by thw way I hated him even before, but know he crossed the line. He have taken allmost the whole track to his track "sing for the moment"
, Originally by

Ronnie James Dio And Yngwie Malmsteen
Cool cover but malmsteen is malmsteen with his extra guitar riffs and what not, but cool none the less.
, Originally by

One of the best rap covers out. Some of his best work.
, Originally by
Fleetwood Mac, Remade by

This is a pretty good cover of the song. Kay Hanley's beautiful voice makes it an amazing new version.
, Originally by

Yes they covered it, but no, it's NOT an 80's song. (Try 1977)

Dobie Gray, Remade by
Uncle Kracker
Kraker clearly appreciated Gray as an influence, and made a faithful variation on this classic. While there are heavier percussion and guitars, they're not so much to obtrusive. If you liked the original (which you should) you'll like this.
, Originally by
Doby Gray, Remade by
Uncle Kracker
I think it may just be the old fart talking but I think Doby's version of this song is a lot better than Uncle Kracker's version but both versions off this song are not without their individual merrits.

I was floored by Ziggy's version of this song. He added a little bit of a reggae twist to it and pulled it off nicely. Now, even though I LOVED Ziggy's version, the original will always be tops.
, Originally by
Kansas, Remade by

Great R & B cover of the song. It's on his CD- A Day in the Life.
, Originally by
Kansas, Remade by
Mago de Oz
This is an excellent version especially that it is in spanish. It is by far the greatest remake I have heard so far of this classic song. The lirics are different so the content of the song has changed. "Pensando en ti" (Thinking of you) has changed "Dust in the wind" to more of a love song which still has the same emotional effect as the original.
