Eighties Cover Songs, Songs Beginning with P
Thanks to Warren Bakay for suggesting this page to me, I hadn't even
realized until he mentioned it, the music industry is dredging up big
hits from the last decade due to a not-so-surprising lack of imagination by
the current stars. This should of course come to no suprise to
most people, some big hits of the eighties were covers
as well ("Mickey", "Der Kommisar", "You Keep Me Hanging On" (which was remade into a
hit four times so far)). So far though, most covers have been pretty
hideous. We only list songs that are originally from the eighties and are now being made
into covers. We also only list a band if they're already well known
or the group is making a lot of radio play with the remake.
Oh and to clear up a misconception a few people out there seem to be having
about this page (and sending me very nasty letters). I have no problem with
artists who do a cover of a song in concert, or because they are just
starting out and don't have enough original material of their own for a full
set of songs. As a matter of fact, cover bands can be great fun to
go and see. All groups in modern history start out this way, I own a lot of
The Beatles albums and they were the original cover group. A lot of
early rock songs were covers of old R&B tunes. It's a fact of life.

, Originally by
The Rolling Stones, Remade by
Mephisto Walz
Female vocals and a certain goth elegance.
, Originally by
Rolling Stones, Remade by
Tea Party
Love it! Never be as great as the original of course, but I like the Tea Party interpretation of that song. GOB also redid it, worth checking out.
, Originally by
Rolling Stones, Remade by
Jonny Lang
Love it, soulful version of the song.
, Originally by
Rolling Stones, Remade by
Marilyn Manson
Its good if u like u should listen to it b4 u knock it but i prefer the original depending on waht mood im in
, Originally by
Rolling Stones, Remade by
Glenn Tipton
thrash-esque cover by the metal gods judas priest's guitarist - incredible
, Originally by
Rolling Stones, Remade by
Gob
Good song, of course, nothing could compare to the Stones. It was used in the movie "Stir of Echoes" and the more crisp sounds definitely had a good effect on the song.
, Originally by
Rolling Stone, Remade by
Inkubus Sukkubus
I am not sure about the spelling of the other band's name. But, it's a symphonic goth cover with female vocals, very nice.
, Originally by
Rolling Stones, Remade by
Earth Crisis
Its heavy. Earth Crisis are a hardcore band, but they really do it well.
, Originally by
Rolling Stones, Remade by
Inkubus Sukkubus
A fine gothic pagan version, you just get lost in the darkness still has the same energy.
, Originally by
Rolling Stones, Remade by
Vanessa Carlton
i would never have thought that the maker of 'a thousand miles' could make a song that good. definetly like it.
, Originally by
Rolling Stones, Remade by
W.A.S.P
Glam rock brilliance, an early B side straight from hell.
, Originally by
Rolling Stones, Remade by
Vanessa Carlton
Alright I guess. Successful debut music career
, Originally by
Rolling Stones, Remade by
Marc Almond
I like Marc Almond and Soft Cell quite a bit. I still think the original is better, but this is definitely worth a listen.
, Originally by
Rolling Stones, Remade by
Sonata Arctica
Very good cover. The vocals are quite good and the band is great of course.
, Originally by
Madonna, Remade by
Kelly Osbourne
I'm sorry, but even though the Osbourne family is hyped right now, the Madonna version is the best. You don't mess with the classics. Point stated.
, Originally by
Madonna, Remade by
Kelly Osbourne
It's not a bad cover but I like the original A LOT better. :)
, Originally by
Guns N Roses, Remade by
Mambo Kurt
I have to disagree with the current comment on your website - I give Kurt points for even having the idea to cover a cheesy band like Guns N Roses with nothing but a Hammond organ -- of course it's going to sound completely different -- thank God! Equally twisted is his cover of "Engel" by Rammstein, or Body Count's "BC In The House"...
, Originally by
Guns and Roses, Remade by
Pat Boone
It's an orchestra playing with a guy that sounds like a lounge singer? funny, but still pretty good.
, Originally by
Guns N Roses, Remade by
Sheep On Drugs
Industrial dance cover of the hard rock classic; very... intense.
, Originally by
Guns N Roses, Remade by
NTrance
A blend or clash of rap and a rock. You decide.
, Originally by
Guns 'n' Roses, Remade by
Mambo Kurt
This is really the worst of the worst. Mambo Kurt is a german artist who remakes hits on his keyboard in the most horrible way. Compared with Mambo Kurt, even James Last can be considered tasteful.
, Originally by
Guns N Roses, Remade by
Eighteen Visions
Well it's ok it's basicly just the "HARDCORE" Version of this song. it was OK.
, Originally by
Black Sabbath, Remade by
Megadeth
This cover rocks, sped up and a lot of energy. Found it on the Hidden Treasures album, a definate A+++
, Originally by
Black Sabbath, Remade by
Extra Hot Sauce
Extraordinary - hilarious
, Originally by
Black Sabbath, Remade by
3rd Strike
Very, very good cover. If you didn't know any better, you'd say it was Ozzy singing.
, Originally by
Black Sabbath, Remade by
Type O Negative
Much slower than the original but ALOT heavier. Found it on Napster, not sure what CD its on but it sounds great
, Originally by
DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince, Remade by
Lil' Romeo,Nick Cannon, and 3LW
Great cover of a late 80's g rated rap song
, Originally by
Elvis Costello, Remade by
The Party
I liked this early 90's pop version much more than the original...but then, that was in my teeny-bopper days. I'm sure their insertion of a rap bridge would make Costello cringe.
, Originally by
Depeche Mode, Remade by
RuPaul
This is a great remake of the Depeche Mode song! The song appears on Rupaul's new album, RED HOT - which is being released later this summer!
, Originally by
The Doors, Remade by
Nosferatu
A very eerie/nice goth industrialish version of this song. It isn't the original so don't expect that but it is not at all bad.
, Originally by
The Doors, Remade by
Echo And The Bunnymen
Being the huge 80's fan that I am, here is a small tidbit. The Doors' version was cool but I think I liked Echo's a little more. This song was in the 1987 movie,"The Lost Boys." Used to like this song as a child and still like it now. I am 22. =)

A Perfect Circle
On new album full of covers
, Originally by
Depeche Mode, Remade by
Stone the Crow
The best Depeche Mode cover I've heard.
, Originally by
Lou Reed, Remade by
Duran Duran
it is one of the most perfect covers you will ever know, and Duran Duran did a very nice job here
, Originally by
Tonio K., Remade by
Warrant
Let's just say that Warrant went down the toilet after attempting to cover this Christian tune.
, Originally by
Depeche Mode, Remade by
Lollipop Lust Kill
Hardcore song, way better than the origanal, if you like your 80s remade to kick ass this is your song
, Originally by
Depeche Mode, Remade by
Marilyn Manson
I like the original, but it's now a song you can dance to, so goths probably like the cover better.
, Originally by
Depeche Mode, Remade by
Gravity Kills
I LOVE Depeche Mode and am wary of covers of their songs but Gravity Kills is awesome with this cover and they make it very heavy. Great!
, Originally by
Depeche Mode, Remade by
Johnny Cash
New enough and absolutely brilliant. Available on "The Man Comes Around" alongside covers of NIN's "Hurt", Simon & Garfunkel's "Bridge Over Troubled Water". Its Johnny Cash as Johnny Cash doing what he does best- not to everyone's taste but i love it...

FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
, Originally by
Def Leppard, Remade by
Malibu Storm
Very good soft cover..very impressed to hear one of my favourite Def Leppard songs turned into a country song.
, Originally by
Def Leppard, Remade by
Jason Falkner
Rocking, bouncy power pop remake. He doesn't beat the original in my book, but cover or not, it's a fun song.
, Originally by
Def Leppard, Remade by
Jason Falkner
Incredible rendition, very poppy and smart.
, Originally by
Olivia Newton , Remade by
Kylie Minogue
GREAT COVER! With the eighties now making a comeback and Kylie Minogue style is all eighties retro now a perfect song for a fellow Austrailian to do! 2 thumbs up !
, Originally by
Olivia Newton John, Remade by
Revolting Cocks
Wow! Major laughter at this song. It is good AND hilarious! I heard that Olivia Newton John tried getting this version of the song by Revolting Cocks banned because she was so repulsed by how the song was done. Hahaha.
, Originally by
Olivia Newton John, Remade by
Goldfrapp
This cover is brilliant! Lovely ethereal and sultry female vocals.
, Originally by
Bruce Springsteen, Remade by
Aretha Franklin
Not a bad cover, but even though she is the "Queen Of Soul", she doesn't touch "The Boss'" version!
, Originally by
John Cougar, Remade by
Avail
Punk version awesome vocals and one of the coolest covers i've herd
, Originally by
Duran Duran, Remade by
Home Grown
I dig the whole Duran Duran tribute, and especially like the reggae verses with the punk chorus on this one. Only problem is that the singer's voice is too much like "Weird Al" Yankovic's. Kinda throws me off. But I still dig the vibe.
, Originally by
KC & the Sunshine Band, Remade by
KWS
Another good effort, but it's just no KC.
, Originally by
The Smiths, Remade by
Josh Rouse
Pretty close to the original, albeit simplified some.
, Originally by
The Smiths , Remade by
Muse
Britsh band, Excellent cover
, Originally by
The Smiths, Remade by
Deftones
I really don't believe that Weezer did a cover to this 80's classic. Deftones covered this and wanted it to be on their debut album "Adrenaline", but the producer, Terry Date, wanted nothing to do with it. Excellent cover of the Smiths' classic.
, Originally by
The Smiths, Remade by
Weezer
You know how Morrisey's version is really ... uh, well, whatever the opposite of 'good' is? Well, this one is good. Completley different. Morrisey is good at the lyrics, but geez.
, Originally by
Smiths, Remade by
Dream Academy
A solid version of the song, has kind of a dreampop flavour though it doesn't deviate much from the original.
, Originally by
Alice Cooper, Remade by
Groove Coverage
Female vocals, hard trance version, very catchy and cool.
, Originally by
Concrete Blonde, Remade by
The Flatliners
sucks
, Originally by
Depeche Mode, Remade by
Terry Hoax
Supposedly recorded by Terry Hoax, a rock band from Hannover, Germany, after Martin Gore proclaimed that "the guitar is dead" at the height of DM's influence. Both the original and the cover are excellent.
, Originally by
Depeche Mode, Remade by
Dishwalla
Quite a good cover, one of the few covers I actually like
, Originally by
Depeche Mode, Remade by
Dishwalla
Great version....included on "for the masses" a tribute cd.
, Originally by
Def Leppard, Remade by
Stone Temple Pilots
When I first heard this live acoustic cover, I thought that SCott Weiland was actually Joe Elliot. Great cover.
, Originally by
Def Leppard, Remade by
Emm Gryner
Pretty impressive acoustic piano version of the great metal classic. If you're looking for a remake that sounds like the original, look elsewhere. This Canadian singer can really sing though.
, Originally by
Def Leppard, Remade by
Stone Temple Pilots
This is a great acoustic cover! I was as suprised as the audience seems to be at the song. In fact, when I first came across this, I was sure there was some mistake. But it is, in fact, STP, covering one of Def Leppards most bubble-gum songs. Really cool.
, Originally by
Def Leppard, Remade by
Townsen
Some new boy band covered this popular hit. Very unexpected.
, Originally by
Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Remade by
Motel Connection
a cover by a new good italian electro band
, Originally by
Huey Lewis and the News, Remade by
Gloria Gaynor
It just wasn't the same song. In fact, Gloria's version sounded more like something that would be sung at a wedding reception or something. The Huey Lewis version is infinitely superior.
, Originally by
Iron Maiden, Remade by
Ancient Wisdom
Not bad, the original was better. From the tribute album "A Call To Irons".
, Originally by
New Order, Remade by
Icon
A crazy techno-trance instrumental version. Really good but too short.
, Originally by
The Psychedelic Furs, Remade by
Schleprock
put out a few years ago great upbeat punk version, very guitar driven pretty cool all around take on the classic 80's song
, Originally by
Pscyhedelic Furs, Remade by
Social Distortion
This is pure punk ass-kickery.
, Originally by
Roy Orbison, Remade by
Van Halen
Van Halen have really done it with this piece. It awesome, a must to listen to.
, Originally by Psychadellic Furs, Remade by Social Distortion
, Originally by
When in Rome, Remade by
Hey Mercedes
I love the original and the cover is awesome and worth checking out
, Originally by
Gene Wilder, Remade by
Smoking Popes or Me First and the Gimme Gimmes
Awesome for those who loved the movie and not bad for just listening to. Although Gene Wilder was the absolute best in the movie, the cover is actually quite good.
, Originally by
Prince, Remade by
Randy Crawford
Slower, more intimate version. Randy (a female) has a brilliant voice.
, Originally by
Prince, Remade by
Stina Nordenstam
kinda sleepy and almost unrecognizable. (I think she's Swedish)
, Originally by
Prince, Remade by
Leanne Rhimes

It is an acoustic version that is AWESOME!!!!!! This guy has so much soul it's sick!!!!!!
