Eighties Cover Songs, Songs Beginning with T
Thanks to Warren Bakay for suggesting this page to me, I hadn't even
realized until he mentioned it, the music industry is dredging up big
hits from the last decade due to a not-so-surprising lack of imagination by
the current stars. This should of course come to no suprise to
most people, some big hits of the eighties were covers
as well ("Mickey", "Der Kommisar", "You Keep Me Hanging On" (which was remade into a
hit four times so far)). So far though, most covers have been pretty
hideous. We only list songs that are originally from the eighties and are now being made
into covers. We also only list a band if they're already well known
or the group is making a lot of radio play with the remake.
Oh and to clear up a misconception a few people out there seem to be having
about this page (and sending me very nasty letters). I have no problem with
artists who do a cover of a song in concert, or because they are just
starting out and don't have enough original material of their own for a full
set of songs. As a matter of fact, cover bands can be great fun to
go and see. All groups in modern history start out this way, I own a lot of
The Beatles albums and they were the original cover group. A lot of
early rock songs were covers of old R&B tunes. It's a fact of life.

AC/DC, Remade by
Six Feet Under
An excellent, tuned down death metal version of the classic AC/DC song.
, Originally by
Black Flag, Remade by
Futurama Cast
Sung over the credits of the second to last ever Futurama is a fantastic revisiting of this classic punk track performed by the cast members in their roles as the different characters on the show.
, Originally by
Soft Cell, Remade by
My Ruin
A whole bunch of other bands did covers of this classic song, most recently, Marilyn Manson.
, Originally by
Soft Cell, Remade by
Erotic Exotic
Standard cover, they did not stray far from the original. Erotic Exotic were best known for "L.O.V.E" and "Take Me As I Am" and "I Can Give You What You Need" all Billboard singles from 1986-1988.
, Originally by
Soft Cell, Remade by
Social Distortion
I didn't see this cover on your page, so I thought I'd let you know about it. It wasn't a bad song, but I didn't care much for the original, so anything was an improvement.
, Originally by
Soft Cell, Remade by
Me First and the Gimme Gimmes
this song rocks
, Originally by
Soft Cell, Remade by
Dishwalla
Awesome version.
, Originally by
Soft Cell, Remade by
Marilyn Manson
I love both versions, but Manson's just blows me away with its heavy goth-metal sound, but they're both great
, Originally by
Soft Cell, Remade by
The Living End
punk cover *sigh*, "oi" does not belong in this classic song...
, Originally by
Gloria Jones, Remade by
Soft Cell
just to let all know that /her/ version was the original. Also, the Dave Matthews Band has done a version of All Along the Watchtower
, Originally by
Soft Cell, Remade by
Marilyn Manson
It's amazing, it's like a complete remake without "raping" the song. It's good.
, Originally by
Soft Cell, Remade by
Impedance
I know that everyone and their dog has covered this song but it is truly amazing. This is a very sexually charged song.
, Originally by
Gloria Jones, Remade by
Soft Cell
I see that you have Soft Cell as the original artist. It was originally performed by Gloria Jones in 1964 on the AVI label (AVI 338).
, Originally by
Soft Cell, Remade by
Marilyn Manson
Honestly i hate the original. The Rev makes it much easier to listen....assumming all the lights are still on...
, Originally by
Soft Cell, Remade by
Hootie & The Blowfish
could be worse... uh... no it couldn't
, Originally by
Soft Cell, Remade by
My Ruin
incredibly powerful cover of this classic tune, gotta love it..
, Originally by
Soft Cell, Remade by
La Union (Spain)
this is a very good cover of the original covered in Spanish, pretty close to the original, definately something to check out if you like music in spanish.
, Originally by
Soft Cell, Remade by
Atrocity
Death metal version of a song that's been done to death.
, Originally by
ABBA, Remade by
Phsychadellic Furs
It's an alright cover. I heard it on the radio one time that it just sounded the same version that ABBA did only it was speeded up a little bit.
, Originally by
The Eagles, Remade by
Travis Tritt
Although you really can't replace The Eagles sound, Travis added a country twist to it and you should be pleased.
, Originally by
Phil Collins, Remade by
Bone Thugs n Harmony
Meh. so so.. i dont mind the Phil Collins Covers... this one wasnt quite up to par tho.. worth a listen if ur a fan...
, Originally by
Berlin, Remade by
Soda Club
Another trance/pop cover of an 80's song. Quite well done, but not quite as interesting as the original.
, Originally by
Berlin, Remade by
Jessica Simpson
Well... Jessica can sing... But no. Im sorry but... The original just gives you a feeling... Jessica is just... Well Jessica. I enjoyed the original better. I think Jessica is a little too poppy for her own good. But hey, shes got a good voice. Her voice should stay in the current music though... Just doesnt fit "Take My Breath Away"... She sang it well... But the feeling... It was just missing. Berlin came, and conquered. Adios Jessica.
, Originally by
Berlin, Remade by
Jessica Simpson
I saw that it was already on here, but I had to counteract the Simpson love-fest. I am NOT a fan, but that's not the point. She has an okay voice, whatever. The original has a sort of haunting feel that the cover doesn't capture at ALL. And Simpson just pushes her voice way harder than it can go, leaving it strained and dreadful.
, Originally by
Berlin, Remade by
Jessica Simpson
Some people who love the original say she murdered the song, but i really like her remake of it
, Originally by
Berlin, Remade by
Jessica Simpson
I agree, the original is the best.. its makes u wanna spend the afternoon in bed with a fighter pilot (or marine or firefigher, whoever blows ur dress up..). Jessica's version was weak. i read somewhere she did it because it was the song that she and Nick had there first kiss too... still.. it needed something.. nice try tho
, Originally by
Berlin, Remade by
Jessica Simpson
I can honestly say that Simpson's cover is amazing. She got the beat just right, and she has the voice for it- similar to the lead singer (whose name is Terri Nunn, I believe)
, Originally by
A-Ha, Remade by
MxPx
its a punk cover of a classic 80's song. what more is there to say?
, Originally by
Ah-ha, Remade by
Reel Big Fish
Excellent cover, if you dig ska.
, Originally by
A-ha, Remade by
Reel Big Fish
For a song that was done with a synthasizer it sounded good for a ska version of it.
, Originally by A-Ha, Remade by You Were Spiraling
, Originally by

Emils Bulls
Kids of today will love it, though. Either my .mp3 was that bad (downloaded it because of sheer curiousity), or it really sounds like recorded in the toilet of the local Junior High.
, Originally by

rocker cover
, Originally by

Lifer (Now Known As My Downfall)
great version of probably the best song to hear covered by a band. in my opinion its the best, much heavier than others.
, Originally by
A-Ha, Remade by
Vision Divine
Power metal with high vocals. I still prefer the original.
, Originally by AhHa, Remade by MxPx
, Originally by

Sounds kind of the same
, Originally by

Off the Punk Goes Metal album. Great cover song, at least in my eyes. JR punches up the original with a little lower tuning and more punch.
, Originally by
Tracy Chapman, Remade by
Living Colour
I actually liked the live version by LC better even though I have Tracy Chapman's debut album, which includes this song, on cassette.
, Originally by

Bit heavier than the original. Found on the 'Where Is My Mind?' tribute album.
, Originally by Siouxie & The Banshees, Remade by Tricky
, Originally by David Bowie, Remade by Deadsy
, Originally by
Taylor Dayne, Remade by
Kelly Llorenna
A trance version of Taylor Dayne's 1988 hit. Kelly certainly has the voice for it and current dance maestro's Flip 'n' Fill update the track perfectly. It's been a huge hit in the UK and certainly worth a listen.
, Originally by Holly And The Italians, Remade by Transvision Vamp

New Order, Remade by
Transmutator
Does the original justice. Romantic techno? Very pretty but not in a wussy way.
, Originally by
Force MD's, Remade by
Trina
Force MD's version is of course better. Trina's version is re-titled as "Here We Go"
, Originally by
Force MD's, Remade by
Bone Thugs N Harmony
Force MD's version is much, much better. Bone Thugs N Harmony's version was retitled "Days of Our Lives".
, Originally by
Pavement, Remade by
Deadsy
Awsome cover!! You can hear it at www.deadsy.net
, Originally by The Romantics, Remade by Figures On A Beach

Great live cover on the Seven Worlds Colide CD. Johnny Marr is actually on guitar here.
, Originally by

Much better than the original ! How to turn an interesting song into a piece of art... ( Downloadable on the bands website in MP3, www.schneidertm.com )
, Originally by

One damn rockin' song.
, Originally by
Eurythmics, Remade by
No Angels
quite okay No Angels are the result of the German version of 'popstars' They took the song, added a 'mordern' beat and reduced the intro to 'da da da' only
, Originally by
La's, Remade by
Boo Radley
faster more upbeat tha original. not as girly as sixpence none the richer's version.
, Originally by
Nancy Sinatra, Remade by
KMFDM
The first song was rather catchy, and I like what they did to the song, it compliments it very well.
, Originally by
Metallica, Remade by
Primus
Original is alot better but this is still a good cover if you like the style that Primus has. Basically the same song only with a Primus twist.
, Originally by
The Smiths, Remade by
Death Cab for Cutie
I found this in the bins at my college radio station just before I did my show and put this in the CD player and decided to give it a listen. All I can say is euh. I thought it was interesting sped up, but what really got me what that the lead singer doesn't even get the lyrics right! 5/10
, Originally by
The Smiths, Remade by
Death Cab For Cutie
This is a great cover. The lyricrs are slightly different than the original but overall it holds up well. DCFC is a stong band. It's off the album "You Can Play These Songs With Chords."
, Originally by

It isn't Veruca Salt its Human Waste Project, that should make it lots easier to find
, Originally by

Not bad - the original was a strong fave of mine, Caracas did a decent job in adding some techno edge to it
, Originally by
Blondie (or was it John Holt?), Remade by
Atomic Kitten
Dreadful, I like a few Atomic KItten songs but this is sacrelige
, Originally by
The Paragons, Remade by
Blondie
The vocal trio The Paragons, with John Holt as there leadsinger, had the rocksteady-hit "The Tide Is High" in 1968. More than 10 years later Blondie made a cover-version. The sentense, "I'm not a kind of man, who gives up just like that", was changed by Blondie in: "I'm not a kind of girl...."
, Originally by
Blondie, Remade by
Sinitta
It's quite a fun cover but it's not quite up to the original. Some fans might take offence if they knew who Sinitta was (a really tacky Stock/Aitken/Waterman girly thing who had some of the most corney chart hits in the UK from 1986-1989.) Her voice is pretty squeeky but its pleasnt enough. I'm a bit of a fan of hers anyway so i'm used to her. I'm sure Debbie and the others would find it funny. This was done in 1990 and not an SAW production (they ditched her the previous year).
, Originally by
Blondie, Remade by
Atomic Kitten
I LOVED IT.
, Originally by
Cyndi Lauper , Remade by
Spoken
I think it is more upbeat, definetly a bit faster, but overall really good, Spoken keeps the structure of the song intact, and manages to beef it up a bit, and vocally, it's very close to the original, easy to listen to!
, Originally by
Cindy Lauper, Remade by
Eva Cassidy
Eva Cassidy's version is better than EBTG
, Originally by
Cyndi Lauper, Remade by
Me First And The Gimme Gimmes
it is really good
, Originally by
Cyndi Lauper, Remade by
Brooke
Not too bad, yet not NEAR as good as the first (like any cover ever could be!!). The guy's voice is kinda too dull for the song, after hearing Cyndi sing it for so long!
, Originally by
Cyndi Lauper, Remade by
Gameface
New Found Glory DID NOT COVER THIS SONG! It was Gameface. If people hear a cover and don't know who did it, they either title it New Found Glory or Me First and the Gimme Gimmes. It makes me angry, even though those two bands do do good covers.

Distant Sounds(z?)
I heard this on the radio, around 1:00 am in October of 2003. I'm in the middle of the USA, but it's apparently from a British techno band. Excellent cover. The lead singer's vocals (to me) assist the feeling of the song. The music in the background, while different than the original, is still one of the best things of this song.
, Originally by
Cyndi Lauper, Remade by
Uncle Kracker
I actually enjoyed it...A LOT!!! It was a nice mellow song at a great pace and actually showed that he has a really good voice. It's not the original but, still very good

Crystal Kay is a Japanese artist, but she sings great English... Very R&B-ish and nice...

Tuck & Patti
I love the original song and I used to cover it with just an acoustic guitar. Then I heard the T&P version and I will never attemt to perform it again. I was blown away and I don't even like jazz but Tuck's guitar work is astounding and Patty has one hell of a voice. The song can be found on their greatest hits compilation and I think it's a live version. Unreal...
, Originally by

Best cover of this song Ive heard so far
, Originally by
Cyndi Lauper, Remade by
Matchbox 20
How can it NOT sound good? Rob Thomas did excellent with this one!
, Originally by
Cyndi Lauper, Remade by
Cassandra Wilson
Nice, jazzy cover...!!! More cozy, romantic, but if you're a Cyndi's fan... Try to calm down. the remake is cutting off Cyndi completely.
, Originally by
Cyndi Lauper, Remade by
Uncle Kracker
Not all that thrilling or necessary. I think your mediocre local bar band could do this.
, Originally by
Cindy Lauper, Remade by

not bad.

A good version of Time After Time... Slower....but nice to kick back to!

Miles Davis
Maybe you haven't heard this one, but Miles Davis did a really pretty instrumental version of this excellent Cyndi Lauper song. He always had a soft spot for good pop songs, and his choice here is no exception.
, Originally by

Matchbox Twenty
I don't think it's on any album but I found it on mp3. I think it is awsome. Check it out.
, Originally by

I really don't like the singer's voice, it sounds, well, whiny. But not much worse than the original.

DJ's @ Work
One of the cover versions I hate most. The original, which was first released in 1988 (according to the FITS homepage), was a very thoughtful song against war. When I turned on MTV last year, my first thought was: "What the f*** is this?!?" DJ's @ work took some of the lyrics, put them together with some fast techno-beat and that way killed the song by deleting the message the original sent.
, Originally by
Elton John, Remade by
Tim McGraw
It sounds like the origional only with a country voice! (Go Figure!)
, Originally by
Elton John, Remade by
Tim McGraw
I'm sorry to say this, country fans, but he butchered it. You just don't remake Elton John, the song was fantastic already!
, Originally by
Elton John, Remade by
Foo Fighters
its an awsome cover but the big pauses make it not worth listening to non stop unless skip threw the talking
, Originally by
Elton John, Remade by
Tim Mc Graw
I must say, this is an excellent cover! From the opening piano it sounds just like EJ. Once Mc Graw sings, you can tell it's not. Like the other post said, sounds like the original, only "country-fied"

Nikki French should be executed for crimes against humanity for this remake. She took the ultimate song for heartache and angst (and lonely Saturday Nights with only a bottle of Stoli for comfort) and turned into a Dance song. Where are the World Courts? Justice must be served!

Truly excellent cover of the origional. Dwight takes a great song and adds his own touch. Sometimes "Countrifying" a rock song runs the risk of becoming a parody. But this song stands on its own merit. I love it!
, Originally by
Joy Division, Remade by
Smashing Pumpkins
A live version. It's horrible. Sonds nothing like the original. He ruins everything about the original bands, just like his song Turn My Way with New Order was pretty bad.
