Eighties Cover Songs, Songs Beginning with J

Thanks to Warren Bakay for suggesting this page to me, I hadn't even realized until he mentioned it, the music industry is dredging up big hits from the last decade due to a not-so-surprising lack of imagination by the current stars. This should of course come to no suprise to most people, some big hits of the eighties were covers as well ("Mickey", "Der Kommisar", "You Keep Me Hanging On" (which was remade into a hit four times so far)). So far though, most covers have been pretty hideous. We only list songs that are originally from the eighties and are now being made into covers. We also only list a band if they're already well known or the group is making a lot of radio play with the remake.

Oh and to clear up a misconception a few people out there seem to be having about this page (and sending me very nasty letters). I have no problem with artists who do a cover of a song in concert, or because they are just starting out and don't have enough original material of their own for a full set of songs. As a matter of fact, cover bands can be great fun to go and see. All groups in modern history start out this way, I own a lot of The Beatles albums and they were the original cover group. A lot of early rock songs were covers of old R&B tunes. It's a fact of life.

"Jealous Guy", Originally by John Lennon, Remade by Collective Soul
the cover is really awesome...it's got this beat that the original doesn't have...but it maybe coz i love collective soul...though still i like the original too...
"Jealous Guy", Originally by John Lennon, Remade by Elliott Smith
This a great cover. Elliott Smith does a haunting rendition of this John Lennon Classic. Check it out!!!!
"Jealous Guy", Originally by John Lennon, Remade by Donnie Hatthaway
Great song. Soulful cover. Live in New York by one of the late greatest soulsingers in history. They sould have sing this together
"Jealous Guy", Originally by John Lennon, Remade by Roxy Music
Bryan Ferry does a wonderful tribute to a wonderful song.
"Jeanny", Originally by Falco, Remade by Reamonn with Xavier Naidoo
Great remake. It is a bit of a faster, more modern sound. I like it much better than the original.
"Jenny (867-5309)", Originally by Tommy Tutone, Remade by Blink 182
i actually like the cover more then the orignal because i think it's alot more fun and upbeat. i think the blink did a great job on the cover
"Jenny (867-5309) ", Originally by Tommy Tutone , Remade by Crease
A pretty good cover with big guitars
"Jenny(867-5309)", Originally by Tommy Tutone, Remade by Mxpx And The Googoo Dolls
less than jake was better, googoo dolls sucked and tommy tutone was the best
"Jerkin' Back And Forth", Originally by Devo, Remade by Jughead's Revenge
Another decent cover from the NOT-import only "We Are Not Devo: A Tribute to Devo" CD. A little edgier than the original.
"Jersey Girl", Originally by Tom Waits, Remade by Bruce Springsteen
This awesome cover can be found on the 3 disc Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band live album. Polished, professional and so well done that you'd swear that it was a Springsteen song (it's often credited to him by uninformed fans).
"Jet Boy, Jet Girl", Originally by Captain Sensible, Remade by Chron Gen
A good song originally, which loses some polish when re-done by Chron Gen. Worth searching out (it can be found on their greatest hits), although they change the words in places.
"Johnny And Mary", Originally by Robert Palmer, Remade by Placebo
Palmer's version is better but as far as an updated version goes Placebo do a great job of adding something to the song rather than just going a carbon copy.
"Johnny And Mary", Originally by Robert Palmer, Remade by Status Quo
This Song is found on 1996-CD "don't stop", find it very good ! But should also say, I'm Quo-Fan since 20 Years...
"Johnny and Mary", Originally by Robert Palmer, Remade by Placebo
Actually very impressed with the Placebo version. They have put out a full CD of just covers, ranging from Kate Bush to the Pixies. Worth checking out.
"Johnson's Aeroplane", Originally by INXS, Remade by Myrtle
very very awsome
"Jolene", Originally by Dolly Parton, Remade by Sherrie Austin
Aussie country singer does a great job on an already awesome classic song, enough said!
"Jolene", Originally by Dolly Parton, Remade by Queen Adreena
Damn fine cover. Scary female baby-doll meets screeching harridan vocals, heavy bassline.. marvellous.
"Jolene", Originally by Dolly Parton, Remade by The Sisters Of Mercy
very good, also made the song a bit darker, love it!
"Jolene", Originally by Dolly Parton, Remade by The White Stripes
I saw it live and it blew me away
"Jump", Originally by Van Halen, Remade by Mary Lou Lord
An acoustic version of VH. Not very good but maybe she can be the new lead singer of VH.
"Jump", Originally by Van Halen, Remade by Aztec Camera
Roddy really slowed it down, nice song.
"Jump", Originally by Pointer Sisters, Remade by Girls Aloud
From the soundtrack of 'Love Actually', it's 'actually' not too bad - maybe it's because it's a girl-group doing a cover of another girl-group rather than being hatcheted by someone totally inappropriate.
"Jump In The Fire", Originally by Metallica, Remade by Bronx Casket Company
Michale Graves (Spy) from the misfits doing the vocals with guys from overkill and seven witches in the band. Not quite as good as old metallica but still quite awesome in the song's own right.
"Jump To The Beat", Originally by Stacey Lattisaw, Remade by Dannii Minogue
A Cathy Dennis style version of the classic track from 1980 released by Dannii Minogue in 1991. This was Dannii's 3rd single and was the first of three covers she releaed in the early 90's. The second was a terrible version of the Jackson's 'Show You The Way To Go' and the third was a great rendition of Melba Moore's 'This Is It' in 1993. Dannii has gone on to better things since her days of bubblegum pop covers. She's now a sophisticated dance/pop artist and trance goddess.
"Just Can't Get Enough", Originally by Depeche Mode , Remade by Nouvelle Vague
Extrodinary lounge version by this French group
"Just Got Paid", Originally by Johnny Kemp, Remade by NSYNC
I like the cover version, but I have only heard the original in the movie, "love and basketball." It sounded exactly the same...
"Just Got Paid", Originally by Johnny Kemp, Remade by 'N Sync
I like it, but it's the same exact song. They don't change it up or anything. I think if you're going to do a cover, change it up, because we don't need to hear the same song twice. Now Britney Spears' cover of the Rolling Stones "Satisfaction". That's a cool pop cover.
"Just Like Heaven", Originally by The Cure, Remade by Katie Melua
Subtly beautiful and dream-like. Imagine drifting off to sleep listening to The Cure.
"Just Like Heaven", Originally by The Cure, Remade by Autolux
weird
"Just Like Heaven", Originally by The Cure, Remade by Jack Off Jill
Very Decent cover. A far cry better than Dinosaur Jr's feable attempt
"Just Like Heaven", Originally by The Cure, Remade by AFI
This song is live and was played at the MTV Icon show. i personally think its one of AFI's best covers.
"Just Like Heaven", Originally by The Cure, Remade by Deadsy
A little bit slower but still an awsome song! Deadsy ROX
"Just Like Heaven", Originally by The Cure, Remade by AFI
Performed on MTV Icon: The Cure
"Just Like Heaven", Originally by The Cure, Remade by Goldfinger
I like this remake... its a little harder but the lyrics are so good that at any speed the song still rocks.
"Just Like Heaven", Originally by The Cure, Remade by Charlotte Summer
The best version I've heard! Female lead vocals and a great beat make this version really stand out.
"Just Like Heaven", Originally by The Cure, Remade by Dinosaur Jr
catchy
"Just What I Needed", Originally by Cars, Remade by ???
I'm looking for the band/album with a woman singing a slow accoustic version of "Just What I Needed" by the Cars. Any help?
"Just What I Needed", Originally by Cars, Remade by Insyderz
This was an awesome remake! Much more upbeat, good vocals and keyboards are replaced with a kick ass horn section... it is pretty close to the original though... only faster
"Just What I Needed", Originally by The Cars, Remade by Sister Hazel
A band that gets NO respect! This song rocks. Check it out.
"Just What I Needed", Originally by The Cars, Remade by Bush
They played this cover live in NYC at a show I was at, and it was spectacular. The guitar effects were perfect and while his voice was definitely his own, it was great! Very like the original.
"Just What I Needed", Originally by The Cars, Remade by Kathryn Musilek
Pretty kick ass. Slower, acoustic, very soulful. Hard to find, but worth hunting down.
"Just What I Needed", Originally by The Cars, Remade by Jughead's Revenge
Imagine the Cars' version sped up a little with a different vocalist. PRetty straight cover.
"Just What I Needed", Originally by The Cars, Remade by Ann Beretta
Definitely more rocking than the original with much less synthesizer.
"Justify My Love", Originally by Madonna, Remade by Ashanti & Vita
Almost the same as the original but, good.
"Justify My Love", Originally by Madonna, Remade by Stranglers
I remember listening to a Station in Toronto CFNY back in the late 80's. The station played back to back a Stranglers song and Madonna's Justify my love. The begging of the two songs sounded very similar almost the same. Unfortunatly I have tried to locate the Stanglers song with no luck.
"Justify My Love", Originally by Madonna, Remade by Front Line Assembly
good version. female guest vocals go well with this "industrialized" version. seems that madonna is a good artist for industrial acts to cover.
