Eighties Cover Songs, Songs Beginning with C
Thanks to Warren Bakay for suggesting this page to me, I hadn't even
realized until he mentioned it, the music industry is dredging up big
hits from the last decade due to a not-so-surprising lack of imagination by
the current stars. This should of course come to no suprise to
most people, some big hits of the eighties were covers
as well ("Mickey", "Der Kommisar", "You Keep Me Hanging On" (which was remade into a
hit four times so far)). So far though, most covers have been pretty
hideous. We only list songs that are originally from the eighties and are now being made
into covers. We also only list a band if they're already well known
or the group is making a lot of radio play with the remake.
Oh and to clear up a misconception a few people out there seem to be having
about this page (and sending me very nasty letters). I have no problem with
artists who do a cover of a song in concert, or because they are just
starting out and don't have enough original material of their own for a full
set of songs. As a matter of fact, cover bands can be great fun to
go and see. All groups in modern history start out this way, I own a lot of
The Beatles albums and they were the original cover group. A lot of
early rock songs were covers of old R&B tunes. It's a fact of life.

Kiss, Remade by
Skid Row
Off of Skid Row's 1992 B-side ourselves EP. This version of a hidden Kiss classic gets the ultimate tribute by the new loudest band around at that time...Skid Row. Sebastain Bach is a die-hard Kiss fan, it was only a matter of time before they paid tribute to Kiss. It is the best version of the song to date...in fact, better than Kiss' version.

1992 or so: Very bad cover, pseudo-fat dancefloor tune, but complete waste of time to listen to, also aching as it is low quality mastered.

DJ Sammy has done it again! Great cover!

I think it rocks. Anyway the original was crap! The only problem is i can't find guitar tabs for it!

Hi Standard
Great punk cover of a good, but slow 60s song. When you let 3 Japanese guys (who think they're 3 japanese girls) go at an old song, WATCH OUT! It's great.
, Originally by
Blondie, Remade by

Simply Great version
, Originally by
Blondie, Remade by
Tiffany
Very like the original but that's hardly a crime as it's such a classic. Nice to see Tiffany out and about again. Her voice has ceratinly improved over the years. Worth a listen. Made for a Blondie tribute album.
, Originally by
Blondie, Remade by
Davinci's Notebook
Davinci's Notebook does an a-capella version of Call Me, which as novel as it is, doesn't compare to the Blondie original. Can be found on the Bendy's Law album. Worth a look.
, Originally by Blondie, Remade by Nikka Costa
, Originally by
Kim Wilde, Remade by
Pulsedriver
Excellent cover version, way better than the original which had potential but never fulfilled it. Nearly all the remixes are brilliant, the Green Court Remix is one of the best remixes I have ever heard. I think it was only ever released outside of the UK
, Originally by
New Edition, Remade by
Guy Sebastian
I liked the song, not knowing that it was a cover. He's got a great voice
, Originally by
New Edition, Remade by
Boyz II Men
Boyz II Men's remake was beautiful, but it's just not the original!!
, Originally by
The Colour Field, Remade by
Smashmouth
It was an Ok job by Smasmouth, but lacked the new wave suave of the Colour Field's version from 1985.
, Originally by
Elvis Presley, Remade by
UB40
I really like the ub40 version better because it is more lively
, Originally by
Elvis Presley, Remade by
Lick the Tins
This was done in the late 80's and beats the UB40 version for me. Anyone remember it from Some kind of wonderful?
, Originally by
Phil Collins, Remade by
Dixie Chicks
The cover was in the Julia Roberts/ Richard Gere Movie "Runnaway Bride." The original is good and the cover is funky. i like it a lot. If your looking for a poppy lil song, perhaps a karaoke tune??, this is worth checking out.
, Originally by
The Police, Remade by
Feeder
Absolutely fantastic! Apparently, Sting thought it was great too. Thats good enough for me. Feeder are brilliant, by the way. I suggest anyone with good taste in music goes out and buys their albums, and singles, 'cuz theres some great b-sides on 'em.
, Originally by
Andy Williams, Remade by
Muse
Passion filled verses, whilst the chorus has been rocked up. Truly brilliant
, Originally by
Cameo, Remade by
Mariah Carey
The Mariah version was called "Loverboy" on the Gitter soundtrack. There were 2 versions on the cd, one with Ludacrs, Shawnna, and Da Brat, and the other actually featured Cameo, which is highly superior. It was a good cover, as Mariah did justice to the song and having Cameo actually on the track gave the song credibility.
, Originally by
New Edition, Remade by
LL Cool J
This is a great remake by LL Cool J, and it even features Ralph Tresvant and Ricky Bell, two original members of New Edition!!
, Originally by

This is an electronic instrumental version of this song.
, Originally by

It's an instrumental cover. It's an excellent version. it can listen it: http://www.download.com/cromaticos arrengments: Mauro Lassos

Slower..r&b remake. Nothing fancy.
, Originally by
Pixies, Remade by

I really, really like this cover. They've slowed the song down a bit, but it's marvellous. Found on the 'Where Is My Mind?' tribute album.
, Originally by
Gary Numan, Remade by
Fear Factory
i love that song and it's true "here in my car, i feel safest of all..." nothing more i like than loud rock in my car!
, Originally by
Gary Numan, Remade by
Fear Factory w/ G Numan
Well covered and still very catchy.
, Originally by
Gary Numan, Remade by
Fear Factory
Very excellent if you like me are highly entertained by dark covers of 80's Pop songs.
, Originally by
Gary Numan, Remade by
Luxt
Luxt's female fronted vox are a bit more distorted than Gary's original, but this cover does little for me largely because the original was so good.
, Originally by
Gary Numan, Remade by
Fear Factory
Loveeeee this song!!!
, Originally by
Gary Numan, Remade by
Fear Factory
While I love the original, there is nothing like the remade version by Fear Factory. Even the video is awsome. The group takes the song and mixes it with their own brand of metal with a touch of techno. While more powerful and louder than Gary's, the song does not rob the original in any way. In fact, with the sound of this awsome version, I am greatly surprised that it never made it in the movie, The Fast and the Furious. So, in that, when I drive, Fear Factory blares over my car's speakers. Great homage!

Integrity
Screaming vocals. If you've heard Integrity before you'll know what to expect. I like the original song and I like Integrity. So yeah I like this song.
, Originally by
Gary Numan, Remade by
Fear Factory
It rocked, and gary numan does a guest spot
, Originally by
Gary Numan, Remade by
Aurasis
Aurasis is a underground and unsigned band. I listened to this cover and thought it was awesome. It's definately worth checking out. They keep the techno vibe to it and it's just brilliant.
, Originally by
Gary Numan, Remade by
Armand Van Helden
Just so you know, the Armand Van Helden version is not really a remake. His track, "Kootchy" just sampled the famous synthesiser melody from it.
, Originally by
Perry Como, Remade by
Adam Ant
Demo version done by punker Adam Ant back in late 70's
, Originally by
Everly Brothers, Remade by
Reba McIntire
Reba's great, but her remake of this song just did not even compare with the original.
, Originally by
Kool & the Gang, Remade by
Jump5
Jump5 covered the song for the soundtrack to the animated tv series "Kim Possible"
, Originally by
Kool And The Gang, Remade by
Kylie Minogue
Why Kylie released this as her last single with Stock Aitken Waterman i'll never know. It's identical to the original in almost every way. This was a big flop for her in late 1992 (UK no.20), only out done by her single with the Manics which was, unlike this, actually quite good. From her 1992 Greatest Hits album.
, Originally by
Kool & the Gang, Remade by

Cool acoustics!!
, Originally by
Duran Duran, Remade by
Deftones
OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!! loved it loved it!! You guys gotta get this version!!
, Originally by
Fleetwood Mac, Remade by
Tantric
Very cool cover! Great song in general but since Tantric does not have a female in the band it gives the song a nice little kick to it that the original doesn't have.
, Originally by
Duran Duran, Remade by
Defftones
Not bad at all, its got be the best cover I have ever heard!
, Originally by
Duran Duran, Remade by

Being a Durans fan, I can say that I liked this cover, it rocks.
, Originally by

, Originally by

Loop Guru
i liked this version of the song. it was different from the original
, Originally by
Iron Maiden, Remade by
Skid Row
Iron maiden is realy a great band, but at some songs they just provide basics and other bands let the song evolve. Also like this one better.
, Originally by
Iron Maiden, Remade by
Therion
A good cover
, Originally by Iron Maiden, Remade by Sinergy
, Originally by
Iron Maiden, Remade by
Sebastian Bach
A perfect example of a great song completely butchered by a (usually) good artist. From the tribute album "Slave to the Power".
, Originally by
The Waitresses, Remade by
Save Ferris
A fun, california take on the waitresses' hit.
, Originally by
Cybotron, Remade by
Missy Elliot
Just the backround sample was covered. It's very obvious.
, Originally by
The Cure, Remade by
Get Up Kids
As far as covers goes, I guess It's passable. BUT, the Get Up Kids totally lost the emotion and essence of the song. I feel sorry for all the kids who've never experienced Robert Smith and The Cure, and gobble up this drivel.
, Originally by

bryan is soft and serene, but George kicks it it deep with the guitars...nice try but no cigar bryan
, Originally by

Very nice. Still one of my favorites.
, Originally by

Awesome ska version of an 80s classic. Definitely a new take....not just reheated leftovers.
, Originally by
Dexy's Midnight Runners , Remade by
Skyclad
Pretty cool, folk version. Sounds nice.
, Originally by
Dexy's Midnight Runners, Remade by
Save Ferris
You incorrectly have Reel Big Fish listed as the covering band for this song, it is actually Save Ferris Thanx
, Originally by
Dexy's Midnight Runners, Remade by
Kilt
Very upbeat Celtic version of this classic 80s song from a Celtic band from the East coast of Canada. I love this version of the song! Kilt also do a kickin' Celtic version of Kiss's I was made for loving you. Both songs still sound very much like the originals with a bit of a Celtic twist. Two of the best covers I have EVER heard.
, Originally by
Dexy's Midnight Runners , Remade by
Save Ferris
its often mistaken for No Doubt But the Band that covers it is save Ferris its a really awsome Ska..song
, Originally by
Duran Duran, Remade by
Kelly Clarkson
I thought this cover sucked. The original is soo much better and it was very pathetic of Kelly to do so, she should write her own music.
, Originally by
Led Zeppelin, Remade by
Extra Hot Sauce
Extraordinary - hilarious Album is very rare to find
, Originally by
Kraftwerk, Remade by
Coldplay
Coldplay lifted Kraftwerk's 'Computer Love' to compose their tune 'Talk'.
, Originally by
The Decendants, Remade by
Millencolin
What can I say a punk bank covering a punk band. It sounds almost the same the beat is the same its nice to hear an old decendants song again
, Originally by
Bob Marley, Remade by
Joe Cocker
Made me litterarily reach for the vomit bag. Since a couple of years Joe Cocker does nothing else but cover versions (like Don't let me be misunderstood from the 70s). It's about time for him to finally retire to save us from such unholy stuff!
, Originally by
Seal, Remade by
Me First and the Gimme Gimmes
Very funny with slightly altered lyrics (probably for more humor).
, Originally by
Seal, Remade by
Alanis Morissette
such an awesome version, she gives a great spin on it, definite A+
, Originally by
Patsy Cline, Remade by
Kindeythieves
this song rocked...totally tore it up....was on the bride of chucky movie...and they remade it perfectly
, Originally by
Seal , Remade by
Mushroomhead
best song on thirteen
, Originally by
Seal, Remade by
Talisman
Great song to start with, but i think this version is better... Jeff Scott Soto sings like a god.
, Originally by
Seal, Remade by
Iron Savior
this song is one of my favorites seal is great and this cover is better so harder so faster so great
, Originally by
Queen, Remade by
Dwight Yoakam
First of all this song was never done by Letters to Cleo or Nick Lowe, as the list claims. As for the Dwight Yoakam version, I hated it. His voice doesn't suit the song at all. He also tries to claim songwriting credit, but Crazy Little Thing was written by Freddie Mercury.
, Originally by
Queen, Remade by
Dwight Yoakum
Of course I love the original, but what can I say, that bald country crooner gets my heart pumping!
, Originally by
Queen, Remade by
Michael Buble
Great jazzy remake.
, Originally by
Ozzy Osbourne, Remade by
Pat Boone
Yes, the Pat Boone of Gospel music fame. It can be found on the CD entitled `No More Mr. Nice Guy' which is make up entirely of Hard Rock / Metal songs done big band style with symphony and horns! Mr. Boone did this album as a joke but some of his loyal gospel fans took it so seriously they actually condemned him for it. Overall it's excellent! When you finish listening to Crazy Train be sure to check out his version of `Smoke on the Water' (Deep Purple)
, Originally by
Ozzy Osbourne, Remade by
Sebastian Bach + Jake E Lee
Nice!
, Originally by
Ozzy Osbourne, Remade by
Dee Snyder of Twisted Sister
off of the ozzy cover album "bat head soup"
, Originally by
Kiss, Remade by
Iced Earth
Iced Earth rocks, and their Tribute to the Gods CD is no exception. Despite the lack of any new material on the CD, it does contain some of the better remakes of Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Alice Cooper, and Judas Priest songs, to name a few. Now don't get me wrong, I love Kiss, but unless you're a die hard Kiss fan, chances are you'll like this version better. Pick up this CD to show support for the best metal band since Black Sabbath!
, Originally by
Metallica, Remade by
Drowning Pool
Original is tons better but this version is surprisingly good still if you're into Drowning Pool's style. It is a live recording but very good quality.
, Originally by
Metallica, Remade by
Apocalyptica
4 Cellos rocking out on Metallica shows you how melodic Metallica Really is.
, Originally by
Gowan, Remade by
Angie Martinez - Never
Nice cover if you like R&B.
, Originally by
Joan Jett, Remade by
Deadsy
The lead singer of Deadsy is the son of Cher and she sings on this version, while not a big of Cher, this version is hands down the best.
, Originally by
Joan Jett , Remade by
Tommy James
awsome the first time i heard it was in baker2g and i never forgot it afterwards ... one of the tightest ass songs ever
, Originally by
Tommy James and the Shondells, Remade by
Joan Jett
Tommy James released this in the late 60's. Joan Jett was still in pampers, but she must have loved it cuz her version rocked!
, Originally by
Jethro Tull, Remade by
Iron Maiden
Jethro Tull got an award for top heavy metal band which I really never got since they always struck me as more along the lines of Pink Floyd. However, the Iron Maiden remake of Cross-Eyed Mary is definitely heavy metal. I didn't actually know it was a Tull song until I listened to the entire Aqualung album (which I came to like). I still like the Maiden version of this song better which is unusual for covers.
, Originally by
Jimi Hendrix, Remade by
Hed p.e.
What can i say, jimi was great, but hed could make a fart sound great nothing quite like hard rock/rap that isnt fake, and i know most is. Great cover
, Originally by
Bananarama, Remade by
Ace of Base
It's a good version. The Ace of Base version is faster than Bananarama version. I like the two versions. It's one of the few versions that I like.
, Originally by
Bananarama, Remade by
BLESTeNation
An upbeat remix of this orginal classic.
, Originally by
Nick Lowe, Remade by
Letters To Cleo
I think the cover was great. It makes me appreciate the original more even though I love the cover just as much. You can find it on the "10 Things I Hate About You" soundtrack.
, Originally by
Godley & Creme, Remade by
Philospher Kings
I think it is a great remake, one of the few i actually like!!
, Originally by
Gerard McMann, Remade by
Carfax Abbey
I was in an original band in Philly that played some of the same venues as these guys ... they're amazing. Very tight, innovative Industrial/Goth band. This cover is a great homage to the original with excellent programming and a similarly eerie feel.
, Originally by
Gerard McMann, Remade by
Zug Izland
Very cool, alot darker than the original.
, Originally by
Quiet Riot/Slade, Remade by
OneWay System
I personally like the cover better, but OneWay System's also one of my favorite bands
