Eighties Cover Songs, Songs Beginning with I
Thanks to Warren Bakay for suggesting this page to me, I hadn't even
realized until he mentioned it, the music industry is dredging up big
hits from the last decade due to a not-so-surprising lack of imagination by
the current stars. This should of course come to no suprise to
most people, some big hits of the eighties were covers
as well ("Mickey", "Der Kommisar", "You Keep Me Hanging On" (which was remade into a
hit four times so far)). So far though, most covers have been pretty
hideous. We only list songs that are originally from the eighties and are now being made
into covers. We also only list a band if they're already well known
or the group is making a lot of radio play with the remake.
Oh and to clear up a misconception a few people out there seem to be having
about this page (and sending me very nasty letters). I have no problem with
artists who do a cover of a song in concert, or because they are just
starting out and don't have enough original material of their own for a full
set of songs. As a matter of fact, cover bands can be great fun to
go and see. All groups in modern history start out this way, I own a lot of
The Beatles albums and they were the original cover group. A lot of
early rock songs were covers of old R&B tunes. It's a fact of life.

Tamia
With Missy Elliot producing and doing adlibs in the background, Tamia turns this into an important song about spousal abuse, and it works. As usual, she sings her heart out, and you can feel the pain and betrayal of a battered woman. Excellent! From the Nu Day cd.

Simply Red
This is one of the best songs from this duo, and the cover, besides it's a remake, it is performed by a very good group and it's excellent!!
, Originally by
Tina Turner, Remade by
Missy Misdamenor Elliot
Missy used the background vocals from this song in her song Supa Dupa Fly. It's interesting the way that she uses the vocals in her song because the begining of Supa Dupa Fly sounds almost identical to the begining of I Can't Stand The Rain (Against My Window.)

Robert Palmer
This song is mistakenly credited to Robert Palmer on this site. But Cherrelle recorded the original R&B version with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis in 1984. Palmers' version was released in 1985 with the Power Station.

Queen Latifah
I love this! This might possibly be my favorite Queen Latifah song. This cover is featured on Latifah's Order In The Court cd, and she does a bang up job. She effortlessy raps three verses, where she is telling a male friend that their relationship is purely plutonic, while she beautifully sings the hook, where she does allude to a couple of flings that they may have had. It's great cover, and it rivals the original. All hail the queen!

I remember seeing a video of this song by an R & B singer named Sheila a few years before I heard Robert Palmer sing it.

From Zero
I've been a fan of From Zero since I first saw them in 2000. I never liked Phil Collins, but when they covered it on their 2003 album 'My So-Called Life' I find myself singing along and really enjoying myself. It rocks!

Another great cover off "One Wild Night" and, again, even better than the original, if only becaus eit is slightly heavier and gets rid of the annoying claps.

Celine Dion
Celine did a good job of this song live. The live version is much better than the studio one. Old version is good too. But I prefer Celine's
, Originally by

Pinmonkey
This is a "progressive country" band out of Nashville. The cover has a slight twang, but it's not over-powering and the harmonies are pretty tight. It's a pretty good cover. Not as good as Roy, much better than Celine.

John Waite & Celine
I like John and Cyndi's but could do without Celine.

I'm not much of a Celine Dion fan but I have to admit that I enjoyed her version.

Laura Branigan, Remade by
Cher, Michael Bolton, Mark Mangold
Here's the situation. Michael Bolton originally wrote the song. Laura Branigan first sang it in 1985. Cher covered it in 1987. Michael himself sang it again in the 1990s...same with Mangold. Michael sings it good...after all he wrote it. But Cher's is the best. Laura Branigan's is almost equally good. Mangold's is just slow like a 70s ballad...it's plain awaful.
, Originally by
Cher, Remade by
First recorded by Touch, changed and recorded in a very "futuristic" way, with synths by Laura Branigan, the essential recording by Cher, Michael Bolton re recorded it with a some very tasty changes, and the organic, unplugged, symphonic version by Mark.

Hootie & the Blowfish
Not sure if Americans are aware of this but the Hootie & the Blowfish tune on the 'Friends' soundtrack is a remake. "I Go Blind" was originally 54-40 -- that's pronounced 'fifty-four forty', a great Canadian band who is still going strong today. (Their new release 'Trusted By Millions' came out last month, & it's very good.)
But as far as the Hootie cover version is concerned, it's not TOO bad, I guess. They didn't really stray too far from the original (a Canadian CLASSIC!), so I can't complain too much, although this recent Hootie-mania is beginning to wear thin. I do like them, but even I have to admit they've been severely overexposed. But I digress...

sunspot is actually a hip hop artist (not a rapper! hes underground! theres no bling bling involved). he utilized the beat and chorus of the original to do a very good slow flowing song. it sounds very good, perfect for a younger generation who barely remembers the original. i like it. i havent heard the cutting crew version, never heard of them, but apparently they did the song too.

Bone Thugs did'nt really "remake" this song, but they sampled the background music of the chourus part of "I Just Wanna Be Your Girl" on one of their mega-selling hits "1st Of Tha Month" from 1995. It's my all time favorite song. I luv 1st Of Tha Month!! Wake up, wake up, wake up, it's tha 1st Of Tha Month Get up, get up, get up, grab yo checks and come on!

Steps
Steps seem to do nothing BUT cover...the untalented brunette sings - badly - in this one, as well as the blonde one who CAN sing. It's meant to be a duet between two women (from the musical 'Chess') but it's covered by a 5-member band so it's a real cacophony when they all yowl different parts at once. Stick to pseudo-Abba songs, guys.

Early 90's remake by a british trio that sounds a lot like Soul II Soul. The female vocalist does a fantastic job and adds a lot of soul to the song.

Man's Ruin
From their self-titled four song mini-E.P., Man's Ruin is a riot grrrl band that makes L7 look like The Go-Go's. While the original was erotic and titliating, this cover was no-holds-barred tough, slutty, and in your face. The cover grabs you whereas the original merely tempts you.

strang but cool remake done by mad teenage girls, kinda like depression rock

Huey Lewis and the News, Remade by
Ray Parker Jr
Actually, acording to Huey Lewis and the News BTM Ray Parker Jr and Company ripped off Huey Lewis and the News with the song Ghostbusters. Huey sued over it because he didn't want any of his music to be used in the soundtrack for the motion picture Ghostbusters. Huey said simply "our music is not for sale." What the producers of Ghostbusters did was they took the song I Want A New Drug and speeded it up on the tracks. Huey put 2 and 2 together and came up with 4 discovering that Ray Parker Jr and the producers of Ghostbusters had ripped them off so they went to court and won the publishing rights to the song.

"I Want Candy", itself, is a remake of a 1965 song for The Strangeloves. In fact, Richard Gotteher (from The Strangeloves) went on to co-found Sire Records and produce The Go-Go's first two albums and Blondie's debut.

You think Wynonna and think no way cover an 80's song. She covers it twice once as the slow ballad as intended and then comes along Piper and remixes it into a dance version which was a top 20 dance hit in the U.S. both versions are HOTTT!!

Will Smith (or his producers) always had a hand for covering good songs what means to pick out cool pieces of work and lay them down with a contemporary disco beat. Good work. But be sure to check out the original - it's more funkier and sophisticated of course.

Celine Dion
I like Celine Dion, but her cover of it was no where near as good as Ms. LaBelle's was. I'm a little that Dion's version was a pop smash hit while LaBelle's only dominated the R&B during the summer of 1989. LaBelle's version stands out in most aspects and is a classic.

Good Charlotte
Nothing brilliant here, just a fun, low-key remake that's basically successful. The original was the prom song from "Pretty in Pink" while this version appears at the prom in "Not Another Teen Movie." Good Charlotte plays it pop-punk without going overboard, so it doesn't lose the slow, glossy sound. It's not that different from OMD's version, in fact, with a more 90's garage feel.

I read about this cover here on this site. Downloaded it off Kazaa and deleted it less than a minute into listening to it. Wrong! Wrong! All Wrong! Half the appeal of Big Country's music was the ability of the guitar work to resemble scottish bagpipes, of which there is no vestige left on this sad remake of what was (and still is) a very fresh and original sound.

Does Sean Combs have even an ounce of originality in him? The whole song isn't a remake, but it seems like everything he does has samples of '80s songs by Sting and several by New Edition. Hey, at least he's getting them some recognition!

The synth is replaced by heavy guitars for a rocking cover version by the Northern Irish noiseniks.

Fantastic. Therapy? actually scored a U.K. top 40 hit with this! Not that that matters, but its a good tune, all the same! This cover can be found on the album 'Troublegum'.

This is an EXCELLENT song!!! Both versions are equally great!! (The St. Jennaro version was re-titled as "Miracle".)

Better than Gamma Rays cover version

I always thought that the original had a great melody, and so it could make a good electric guitar riff...so be it! Gamma Ray rocks! I am a big heavy/powermetal fan,so I love this cover...

Celine Dion
The original version was done by Pandora's Box, an all girl group of the late 80s that was a one hit wonder. It is on their only album `Original Sin'. Both songs were produced by Jim Steinman, who has worked with Meat Loaf, Bonnie Tyler, Andrew Lloyd Webber etc, and who fancies himself as a `Phil Spector-type' producer. As far as I can tell, the two versions sound virtually identical, and thus I like them both equally. Meat Loaf later did covers of some songs from the same album.

Awsome cover, faster and harder.

I like both versions equally. Though, I do enjoy ND's better because of the harder hitting beats, but TT's version is also better.

Annoyingly, No Doubt shouldn't have sung this Talk Talk song because the remake seems very confusing.

It was fine up until the chorus. Doesn't help that I don't like No Doubt that much in the first place. The original is so much better.

From the "Newer Wave Vol. 2" compliation, which is made up of electropop/industrial covers of 80's songs.

I like No Doubt but Gwen Stefani is whining on the song. The video is pretty cool though.

Gwen Stefani's voice did the song justice I think.

Gwen does a surprisingly good job on this song. I am usually resistant to covers, but this one is a hit with me.

Unilke Rammstein's butchering of Stripped here is an example of a good cover effort. Chevelle very much did it justice.

This song is on their live album and on "All the Hype Money Can Buy". This cover holds to the original for the most part, but the ska feel puts it far ahead of anything Tom Jones ever did.

Not as good as the original, but a fine, rollicking accoustic version by this East-coast Canadian band.

Not bad, more upbeat - added some Canadaian East Coast kick to it

D.C. Talk
DC Talk is a piller christian band that usually mimics whatever is popular at the time (blah blah blah when grunge game they were grunge but when "In Living Color" style rap was cool thats what they did.) either way they preserved the song well. Didn't ruin it but they didn't add anything either.

Great cover, the bass line really stands out on this version. They put an origanal twist on it.

It's...alright. I love both bands, but the Manic's version was a really early live recording, so it's far from them at their best. It's also quite rare, available on an early single from their first album, 'Generation Terrorists'. The original is better, though!

Very good punk cover. They don't come any better then this. It does the rem song juctice. Its the best cover of this song i think i have ever heard.
