Eighties Cover Songs, Songs Beginning with G
Thanks to Warren Bakay for suggesting this page to me, I hadn't even
realized until he mentioned it, the music industry is dredging up big
hits from the last decade due to a not-so-surprising lack of imagination by
the current stars. This should of course come to no suprise to
most people, some big hits of the eighties were covers
as well ("Mickey", "Der Kommisar", "You Keep Me Hanging On" (which was remade into a
hit four times so far)). So far though, most covers have been pretty
hideous. We only list songs that are originally from the eighties and are now being made
into covers. We also only list a band if they're already well known
or the group is making a lot of radio play with the remake.
Oh and to clear up a misconception a few people out there seem to be having
about this page (and sending me very nasty letters). I have no problem with
artists who do a cover of a song in concert, or because they are just
starting out and don't have enough original material of their own for a full
set of songs. As a matter of fact, cover bands can be great fun to
go and see. All groups in modern history start out this way, I own a lot of
The Beatles albums and they were the original cover group. A lot of
early rock songs were covers of old R&B tunes. It's a fact of life.

Britney Fox
Not too bad, makes the translation from 70's brit glam to 80's cheese metal well
, Originally by
Iron Maiden, Remade by
Steel Prophet
Never was a great fan of the original song but this one holds up. From the tribute album "A Call To Irons 2".

Not bad, the original was better. From the tribute album "A Call To Irons".

Crap soul version.

, Originally by
Queen, Remade by
Nine Inch Nails
This was released on a mini-CD that came with Broken (a whole two-tracker that also had How Does It Feel which was actually better on the Pigface album). Anyhow, I was never a devotee enough of Queen to have actually heard their version but this song wasn't horrible (was obviously a remake though, not very Trentish. The credit is given to Adam Ant on the CD not to Queen).

Yet another in a long line of interesting covers that Trent Reznor has trotted out, this one can be found on one of his early EPs (I forget which one at the moment). He gives the song his usual funky death disco treatment.
, Originally by
KC And The Sunshine Band, Remade by
Bamboo
cheap dance version.
, Originally by
Madonna, Remade by
Sonic Youth
I've never been a huge Sonic Youth fan, but this is just damn atrocious. Hearing him attempt to sing this may actually induce vomiting in some people. Only plus is the actual samples from the original.

good stuff
, Originally by
The Psychedelic Furs, Remade by
Counting Crows
It was...okay, though I like the PFs much better. This one is also found on the "Clueless" sound track, which just says movie producers can't stick too many covers of popular songs on new movies' sound tracks.
, Originally by
Psychedelic Furs, Remade by
Robyn Hitchcock
An acoustic take on the classic Psych Furs song that perfectly captures its spirit...one of the few cover versions that I actually like better than the original.
, Originally by
Psychedelic Furs, Remade by
Counting Crows
This was on the Clueless soundtrack, but actually was originally recorded and released by the radio station KBCO in Boulder, Colorado. Adam Duritz voice just doesn't cut it on this song. Way too whiny.
, Originally by The Specials, Remade by Tricky & Terry Hall

Xentrix
A heavy metal cover of an 80s classic. This song works well as a metal song. Somehow it doesn't sound as silly.
, Originally by

Bowling for Soup
BFS covered this song on the "Just like Heaven" movie soundtrack. I have to say that this was a pretty good version of the song. I wasn't disappointed at all.
, Originally by

Vomitron
A lot spookier than the first.
, Originally by

I was laughing my a** off when I heard this version. Not to be called serious in any way but great fun!
, Originally by
Pixies, Remade by
Reel Big Fish
REALLY different. Found on the 'Where Is My Mind?' tribute album.
, Originally by
ZZ Top, Remade by
Kim Mazelle and Jocelyn Brown
Another Stock and Aitken produced cover this time by Kim Mazelle and Jocelyn Brown. Once again it's 90's europop very much like Nicki French. Not as good as the original. The song just doesn't suit the style it's being made into here. Their Donna Summer/Barbera Streisand one was far better.
, Originally by
ABBA, Remade by
Erasure
As to be expected from Erasure, camp, but entertaining. From the "other people's songs" album
, Originally by
ABBA, Remade by
Yngwie J. Malmsteen
Great guitar work totaly changed the genre so it's hard to say wich one is best, i like Malmsteen's genre more but ABBA was a great band also

Therapy?
Possibly one of the unusually excellent covers ive ever come across. Feels so wrong yet feels so right...
, Originally by
Spencer Davis Group, Remade by
The Alleycats
Live cover with some great drum and bass solos the sound was pumping
, Originally by
Snoop Dogg, Remade by
The Gourds
Very country sounding, with a banjo or mandolin or something. It is most often labeled as being Phish, but it's really The Gourds.

NOFX
I know this is already out there (several times)...I've seen Berlin Project live, and do this song in their set. But the version available online everywhere, is not them, it's NOFX. So, sure Berlin Proj covers it, but the one most people are hearing is NOFX.
, Originally by
Snoop Doggy Dogg, Remade by
The Berlin Project
Neither NOFX or NFG covered this song, it was a ska/punk band from the east coast called The Berlin Project. A lot of the info on this site is wrong, and gin and juice wasnt even made in the 80's.

Snoop Dogg, Remade by
New Found Glory?
Personally I hate rap, but the original was okay, but the punk version is really good!! even though you can't understand all of it, but who can understand snoop anyways...so i think the cover is better!
, Originally by
Snoop Doggy Dogg, Remade by
Assorted Jelly Beans
Good cover - (sort of) is not by me first and the gimme gimmes, NOFX or NFG, it's by the assorted jelly beans (i'm being serious)
, Originally by
Snoop Doggy Dogg, Remade by
NOFX
Wonderful, absolutely wonderful. Although, it's a shame that NFG is getting credit for it when it's NOFX's cover. All the mp3's have the wrong artist name attached. (Note: It may not even be NOFX, if not, it's Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, Fat Mike either way)

Pretty good cover from the "Freedon of Choice" comp.
, Originally by

This is an awesome cover. That's all I have to say.
, Originally by
Cyndi Lauper, Remade by
Cyndi Lauper feat. Puffy AmiYumi
An interesting ska version with the J-Pop duo Puffy AmiYumi (or just Puffy in Japan). Cyndi, of course, sings lead. I really like this version.

I thought that this cover was pretty good..

this is the theme song for karate kid and it is awesome! i love it. i'm tyring to get this to be my prom theme (i doubt that will ever happen... but it's worth a shot)

different but decent
, Originally by

If you like old school hip hop then you like this song to begin with. Sevendust just put a hard rock spin on it.

love hip-hop love heavy metal, get sevendust doing a remake of LL Cool J and im happy
, Originally by

Not as good as the original, but rather impressive. It is definitely an interesting take on the song.

A mellow interptation of a mellow song
, Originally by

PM5K did an extraordinary cover song, better than original!
, Originally by
Ozzy Osbourne, Remade by

Probably the only song in Ozzy's repitoire she could come close to pulling off. It works, though
, Originally by

Unwritten Law
It was a good cover! Not as good as the original, but very good.
, Originally by
Cyndi Lauper, Remade by
A New Found Glory
Way faster than the original mainly because its all punked up, if you're into the Before You Were Punk albums, you should check this out
, Originally by

It's a cool song if you like punk, but the original is definately better.
, Originally by

Donots
Cool cover version by the German Punk Band "The Donots". From the 7 track special EP "Donots go Metal"
, Originally by

Why can't all these new popstars groups make their own stuff? This is really annoying cause This version is identical to the original one.
, Originally by

Promise Ring
Kind of bland, but not terrible. Found on the 'Where Is My Mind?' tribute album.
, Originally by

Papa Roach
Papa Roach's new disc "lovehatetragedy" is awesome by the way....and a great cover from an excellent 80's alternative group.
, Originally by

Atrocity
A metal-style version of this 80s classic by the German metal band "Atrocity". From their album "Werk 80", which contains a whole bunch of great metal versions of popular 80s songs. This song features a rather melodic voice in contrary to the other tracks on this album.
, Originally by
Misfits, Remade by
Metallica
I thought the song was originally okay the way it was... then I heard the song redone by a really really hardcore band which made it seem really awful. But my hopes got raised when i heard it done the way it should be done by Metallica, true fans of the Misfits.
, Originally by
Helloween, Remade by
Rhapsody
Awesome. Clearer and more powerful than the original.
, Originally by
Barbra Streisand And Barry Gibb, Remade by
Jamelia
It's a good version, but more of an interpretaion than a cover
, Originally by
Devo, Remade by
Clawhammer
I haven't had an opportunity to listen to all of this yet. I actually think their cover of "Jocko Homo" is better however they have two different versions of "Gut Feeling". Both songs can be found on Clawhammers album (Q: Are We Not Men A: We Are Not Devo).
