Eighties Cover Songs, Songs Beginning with B
Thanks to Warren Bakay for suggesting this page to me, I hadn't even
realized until he mentioned it, the music industry is dredging up big
hits from the last decade due to a not-so-surprising lack of imagination by
the current stars. This should of course come to no suprise to
most people, some big hits of the eighties were covers
as well ("Mickey", "Der Kommisar", "You Keep Me Hanging On" (which was remade into a
hit four times so far)). So far though, most covers have been pretty
hideous. We only list songs that are originally from the eighties and are now being made
into covers. We also only list a band if they're already well known
or the group is making a lot of radio play with the remake.
Oh and to clear up a misconception a few people out there seem to be having
about this page (and sending me very nasty letters). I have no problem with
artists who do a cover of a song in concert, or because they are just
starting out and don't have enough original material of their own for a full
set of songs. As a matter of fact, cover bands can be great fun to
go and see. All groups in modern history start out this way, I own a lot of
The Beatles albums and they were the original cover group. A lot of
early rock songs were covers of old R&B tunes. It's a fact of life.

this is an awesome cover by the oc hardcore band. its right on even the female screaming is great. must hear.

This Cover was good, it was very aggresive, much like the cover by throwdown, but this one showed a better representation of the original song, but by combining heavy rock guitars, and a Dj for all the scrathwork, this cover is definately a keeper

Hilarious cover. Baby Got Back being rearranged to sound like hotel lounge music. It's somethin' else.

Take That, Remade by
Robbie Williams
Yes, I realize he was in the group, but since he wasn't the singer on the original it counts. Plus it's much harder in the chorus than the original.

The Hives
Great remake with the music sounding the same but with Howlin Pelles unique vox
, Originally by
AC/DC, Remade by
Yngwie Malmsteen
In a word: awesome! The song remains pretty much the same apart from a slight re-shuffling of the riff order at the start, and mad solo's chucked in for good measure (just Yngwie being Yngwie!) I think I actually prefer this to the original. Highly recommend it.
, Originally by
Yaz, Remade by
Everclear
Well, it comes off sounding a lot like an Everclear song, big-guitars chorus and all, which may be good or bad depending on your tastes. The retro tinge is pretty much gone, but the prank-call segment in the middle hasn't left.

Cool cover version by the German Punk Band "The Donots". From the 7 track special EP "Donots go Metal", which features a studio version and a live version with "Rockin' Rolf" from Running Wild himself.

As much as I admire the mega-talented XTC, I enjoy the Dummies version a bit more than the original. Ellen Reid sings lead and she can really belt it out! If your an XTC fan it's worth a listen.

Harvey Danger
This is a song that was never actually released... they had recorded it for the '200 Cigarettes' soundtrack, and it was turned down ... so, they then recorded 'Save It For Later' which ended up being their contribution to the movie. I actually like this one better, but HD is my favourite band.

Limp Bizkit
They recorded it for the Halle Berry movie Gothika. I think it's a great version. He doesn't have the sad sound that Roger Daltrey had but I think he did a good job. I believe it's actually a 70's song but there's no cover songs list on that page.
, Originally by

As a fan of industrial music, I prefer cut.rate.box's take on what already was a very good song. This version has a bit more edge and energy.

Merril Bainbridge
While this Australian songstress faded into relative obscurity after her radio hit "Mouth" in the mid 90s, her album "The Garden" is a solid release. Her version of "Being Boring" takes what was a sorry attempt at a dance song and makes it into a tear jerker of a ballad. Go get this MP3. Better yet, but this album. The whole thing is great.

Fozzy
Scorpions did a great job with this song as they did with all of their songs. Fozzy redid the song and it sounds great. The lead singer of Fozzy has a deaper voice making this song rock even harder. For me it's jsut something about the guitar solos in 80's and early 90's rock that makes the blood flow. You should really check out Fozzy's version it really rocks. The lead singer of Fozzy is actually a WWE wrestler, can you guess which one?
, Originally by

The fist time I heard this cover I wasn't too sure about it but after listening again I really got into it. Ian Brown gives it his own funky spin without ruining the song. I highly recommend it (not that you know me and care...but it is quite good!).

, Originally by
New Order, Remade by
Stabbing Westward
New Order's was stronger, and easier to dance to. The guitars are more obvious, but the covering band doesn't really add anything to it; even the end music box chimes were left in. "Bizarre Love Triangle" just works best with a more produced, electronic feel.

Personally, I think the cover is absolutely wonderful. The original Blue Monday really puts me to sleep... it's too drawn out for me. I think Orgy did the song quite well.

The Agnews
This is on the Ramones tribute album "Gabba Gabba Hey". The Agnews do a great job of covering this song - they speed it up by 1/2 & start off the song w/ soundalike of Ronald Reagan (whom the song was about).

I really thought the song was good by The Cure, but it's even better with Oleander's edge on the album February Son.
, Originally by

Awesome cover - much harder than the original.
, Originally by
Don Henley, Remade by
The Ataris
Surprisingly good, for a classic rock tune redone by a 21st-Century punk band. The passion behind the lyrics is there, albeit it's sped up a little. However, what sounds almost exactly like the original is Mike Campbell's (or Danny Kortchmar's?) guitar solo. A second guitar even simulates the seagull cries. I saw the video and didn't think it was as memorable as Don's. This song's been covered several times, and I think Don would be most pleased with how this one sounds.

DJ Sammy and the Ataris both covered Don Henley's, "The Boys Of Summer" but I like the one by Don Henley better. Because I love the 80's. And I LOVE hearing original songs. Original songs are very nice. Especially from the eighties.
, Originally by
Don Henley, Remade by
The Ataris
Not a bad version but doesn't add much more to the original which is still an all time classic. I do like the reasoning behind why they did the cover.... "....Kris says he has a personal attachment to the song. "That song represented a part of my childhood where I remember travelling down to Florida for the first time to visit my grandparents in the summer and that song was huge" he says. "I heard it on the radio and my grandmother, who recently passed away, I made her take me out and buy that record. That song reminds me of my grandmother and it also reminds me of travelling the world for the first time. It was kind of like a nostalgic tint for me and it's just a great Americana rock song". The Ataris made one small change to the lyrics. Don's line 'I saw a DEADHEAD sticker on a Cadillac' has become 'I saw a BLACK FLAG sticker on a Cadillac'. "We actually did about ten different versions with different band names" Kris says. "There's our good friend Bill Stevenson who played drums in Black Flag and also the Descendants and All and I think that changing the name from the Deadhead sticker on the Cadillac to the Black Flag sticker on a Cadillac was a great honour to take the f***ing Grateful Dead name out of that song. I think that the Grateful Dead were f***ing horrible and most people, except for a bunch of snooty hippies, would agree with me that the Grateful Dead's music was just watered down f***ing country music and f***ing Black Flag were a much more credible band". - Gee, wouldn't think that changing a couple of words would have so much emotional attachment!
, Originally by

The Ataris
I've heard Don Henley's 1984 hit, "The Boys Of Summer" before. But they remade it by the Ataris which was fast. But I like the one by Don Henley better. I have two favorite Don Henley songs, which are "Sunset Grill" and "Dirty Laundry".
, Originally by
The Cure, Remade by
Oleander
I hate this cover. I dont see how any band could mess it up but Oleander found a way. I wish there was a "Marilyn Manson" type cover for it. This was just terrible!
, Originally by
Don Henley, Remade by

Don Henley:Hey, B.A! Bryan Adams:Yeah, Don? Don Henley:DJ Sammy did a lousy remake of one of my songs too. Can I join you on your lawsuit? Bryan Adams:Sure.

An awesome cover! Personally, I find the Ataris' version better than the original!
, Originally by
Don Henley, Remade by
The Ataris
Theres no need to talk about the importance of their song choice. The fact is Don Henley did a great job and they obviously just liked the song and covered it. No, it doesnt mean theyre out of ideas or that the dumb word change should start world war 3...get over it... its just a good cover and people are being jerks about it. THE ATARIS ARE AWESOME!!

BLACK FLAG? Hardly relevant to anyone but those who even know who they are. Dead Head Sticker meant something to EVERYONE. these 20 something bands need to STOP remaking songs - maybe lack of talent?

Take the well-known rap song "boyz-n-the hood", play the notes w/ musical instruments rather than a synthesizer, slow down the beat by 1/2, and have a white guy sing it. That's what you get w/ the cover version by Dynamite Hack. I suspect it was payback for Run DMC's cover of "Walk This Way."

This is one of those "barely fits" type things. Burning Inside was one of Ministry's first "hard" songs (they actually used to do stuff that was closer to New Order believe it or not).
